THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THOMAS LORD FAIRFAX Baron of Cameron in that Part of Great Britain called Scotland Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia. To all to whom this present Writing shall come sends GREETING. KNOW YE that for good Causes for and in consideration of the composition to me paid and for the annual Rent hereinafter received I have given, granted and confirmed and by these Presents for me my Heirs and Assigns do give grant and confirm until William BARTLET of Loudoun County a certain Tract of waste and ungranted Land on and about the South Side of the Blue Ridge in the said County Which said Land was surveyed for Francis DADE and a Plot thereof returned from under the Hand of John HOUGH dated April 26th, 1763, the said Francis DADE not complying with an Advertisement issued from my Office dated March 26th, 1763 requiring all Persons who had Surveys in this Office dated before the year 1764 to pay for the same before a certain time therein mentioned or they should forfeit all Right and Claim to the said Surveys as may more fully appear by the said Advertisement recorded in my office in Book N to which I refer. The said Land is bounded as follows.. BEGINNING at a Black fig? A small Branch at the Foot of the said Mountain, Corner to Doctor TURNER and Thomas SUDDEN, Extending thence with TURNER’s lines S.W.? Two hundred and thirty Poles to a White Oak and a Chesnut [sic] Oak on the side of the Ridge, Thence South Seventy Four Poles to a Chesnut and a Spanish Oak, Thence So.W.? Forty six Poles to a White Oak, Thence S 10o E Seventy two Poles to a Hiccory and a Red Oak Sapling, then S 49o N? Two hundred and thirty two Poles to a Hiccory and a White Oak all corners to the said TURNER, then N 30o W Two hundred Poles to a White Oak and a Chesnut Oak and then S 54o E Ninety five Poles to the Beginning containing Five hundred and four Acres. Together with all Rights Members and Appurtenances thereunto belonging Royal Mines excepted and a full third part of all Lead, Copper Tin Coals Iron Mine and Iron Ore that shall be found thereon. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said 504 Acres of Land together with all Rights Profits & Benefits to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining Except before excepted. To him the said William BARTLET his Heirs & Assigns forever, He the said William BARTLET his Heirs & Assigns therefore yielding & paying to me my Heirs or Assigns or to my certain Attorney or Attornies Agent or Agents? Or to the certain Attorney or Attornies of my Heirs or Assigns Proprietors of the said Northern Neck yearly and every year on the Feast Day of St. Michael the Archangel the Fee Rent of One Shilling Sterling Money for every Fifty Acres of Land hereby granted & so proportionably [sic] for a greater or lesser quantity. Provided that if the said Wm. BARTLET - his Heirs & Assigns - [inserted] shall not pay the said reserved annual rent as aforesaid so that the same or any part thereof shall be behind & unpaid by the Sp--? of two whole years after the same shall become due & legally demanded that then it shall & may be lawful for me my Heirs or Assigns Proprietors as aforesaid my or their certain Attorney or Attornies Agent or Agents into the above granted premises to reenter & hold the same so as if this Grant had never passed. Given at my office in Frederick County under my Hand & Seal. Dated January 7th, 1771.

INDENTURE OF LEASE

REV. DENNY FAIRFAX TO SAMUEL BARTLETT

{Abstract}

This Indenture made the 17th day of November one thousand seven hundred and ninety two (1792) Between the Revd. Denny Fairfax, lately called Denny MARTIN of Leeds Castle County of Kent and Kingdom of Great Britain D. C., a Devisee and Legatee named in the Last Willl and Testament of the right Honble. Thomas Lord FAIRFAX Baron of Cameron in that part of Great Britain called Scotland and Proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia deceased by Thomas Bryan MARTIN Esqr. of Greenway Court County of Frederick and State of Virginia of the one part and Samuel BARTLETT of Loudoun County of other part; Whereas (this Deed continues relating the Power of Attorney to Thomas Bryan MARTIN, the legal proof, and authority to dispose of the lands devised him by his Uncle, Thomas Lord FAIRFAX...); Now This Indenture witnesseth that Denny FAIRFAX by his Attorney aforesaid in consideration of the rents and covenants hereafter mentioned by these presents doth demise and farm let unto Samuel BARTLETT all that parcel of land No. 456 in the County of Loudon being part of the Manor of Leeds and bounded,

Beginning at three Hiccorys in a line of the Original & corner to Joseph REED, thence with his line No. 7 W. 200 poles to a Hiccory in a line of EDMUNDSON & corner to said REED the West side of Jeffries Branch, thence S. 6d. E. 44 poles to a shite Oak, thence S., Wt. 76 pl. to three white Oakes and a Poplar on West side of Jeffries Branch corner to the original, thence S. 50d. E. 160 pl. to two red Oaks & a white Oak in a Poison Field marked L. T. F., thence No. 16d. E. 192 poles to the beginning, containing one hundred and sixty three acres;

To have and to hold the land to Samuel BARTLETT his heirs during the natural lives of him sd. Samuel, William, his son, & Francis ROMINE [Son of Francis ROMINE] to commence from the firs day of May last, said Samuel BARTLETT his heirs paying to Denny FAIRFAX or his Attorney his heirs the yearly rent of three pounds five shillings current money of the State of Virginia and also pay to Denny FAIRFAX or his Attorney the present assessments or Land Tax, and all future Assessments or Land Taxes or other Taxes either ordinary or extraordinary (the covenenats and agreements is Deed as in the foregoing Lease...); In Witness whereof the said Denny FAIRFAX by his Attorney aforesaid and said Samuel BARTLETT have hereunto set their hands and seals the day & year before written.

See the Will of William BARTLETT (d. 1804).

On May 14, 1785 in Loudoun Co., VA Henry OLDACRE, Jr. names in his will his wife, Elizabeth, and appoints her brother, Samuel BARTLETT, as one of his executors along with his own brother, John Oldacre. Witnesses to the will were Robert WYNN, John BOORAM and Mary BARTLETT who signed by mark. The will was presented to the court at Loudoun Co, VA on 19 Oct 1785. From an accounting of this estate recorded 12 July 1790, it is learned that Elizabeth BARTLETT OLDACRE has married Henry HIERONIMUS who was appointed the guardian of four of her five children by Henry OLDACRE.

Henry HIERONYMUS was the son of Francis HIERONYMUS and Elizabeth RECTOR and at one time Francis HIERONYMUS did business as "HIERONYMUS and BARTLETT". ["The HIERONYMUS Story", 1985, p. 113] .

One William BARTLETT married Nancy RECTOR Sep. 23, 1805 in Fauquier Co., VA.

In March 1783, William BARTLETT and wife Mary of Loudoun Co, Va sell land to Thomas HUMPHREY which was part of the land sold to BARTLETT by Lord Thomas Fairfax by Deed bearing date of 7 Jan 1771. From another deed, Richard THATCHER sells the land that he bought from William and his wife Mary and it is learned that the land was on the North West fork of Goose Creek."

In a deed dated 9 Feb 1791, Daniel BARTLETT and Susannah, his wife, sell land to Peter MATHEW. The land is said to be "part of a tract of land lying in County of Loudoun taken up by William BARTLETT, Father of said Daniel BARTLETT, by Patent from the Proprietors Office bearing date the seventh day of January 1771 and conveyed by said William BARTLETT to said Daniel BARTLETT."

Miscellaneous notes on the SEYBOLD surname (witnesses to the 1792 Lease above): One Jasper SEYBOLD md. Nancy CARROLL, had dau, Sarah in 1793. Sarah md. John POWER and is found in Fleming Co., KY in 1826. A Jesse SEYBOLD and 3 other SEYBOLDS are found on the 1831 Tax List of McDonough Co., IL.
