DEED OF LEASE
THOMAS ARMSTRONG to JOHN LAVENDER BARTLETT

This indenture made this first day of March one thousand eight hundred and nineteen between Thomas ARMSTRONG of the County of Jefferson and State of Kentucky of the one part and John Lavender BARTLETT of the same county of the other part witnesseth that the said Thomas for and in consideration of the sum of one thousand dollars current money of the United States to him in hand paid by the said John the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained and sold aliened release enfeoffed conveyed and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain and sell alien release enfeoff convey and confirm unto the said John and to his heirs and assigns a certain tract or parcel of land containing one hundred and eighty acres with the appuirtenances lying and being in the said county on the waters of Fern Creek and on the main road leaving from Louisville through Wards and Speeds Lane to Shepherdsville it being the same tract of land on which the said Thomas lives and which he has rented to the said John for three years from this date by a deed of lease bearing even date herewith, to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with all the appurtenances unto the said John and to his heirs and assigns to his and their only proper use and behoof forever and the said Thomas covenants and agrees with the said John and his heirs and assigns that he the [said] Thomas is siezed of a good sure perfect and indefeasible estate in fee simple of in and to the said premises that he has good right and full power to sell and convey the same unto the said John and to his heirs and assigns forever and that he the said Thomas will and his heirs exec’ors and adm’ors shall warrant and forever defend the said tract or parcel of land with all the appurtenances unto the said John and to his heirs and assigns against all and every person or persons whatever lawfully claiming or to claim the same provided nevertheless and these presents are on this condition that if the said Thomas his heirs ex’ors or adm’ors do and shall well and truly pay and satisfy to the said John or his assigns the sum of one thousand dollars in gold or silver coin of the United States or part of each on the first day of March in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred and twenty-two for which the said Thomas has given his note of this date to the said John, then these presents and every matter and thing herein contained shall cease determine and become utterly null and void and the said John his heirs or assigns shall reconvey the said premises to the said Thomas his heirs or assigns at his or their proper costs and charges within a reasonable time after request.
And the parties agree that if the said one thousand dollars shall not be paid on or before the said first day of March eighteen hundred and twenty-two that the said John his heirs or assigns shall hold possession of the said premises from year to year thereafter, until the said one thousand dollars shall be paid - which shall be done before the commencement of the year beginning the first day of March and that if the year shall commence before the said one thousand dollars shall be paid that then the said John his heirs or assigns shall keep possession of the said premises for that year and so on for each succeeding year until the said money shall be paid before the commencement of such year - and the use of the said premises shall be set off against the interest on said money from and after the said first day of March 1822, the rents of the said premises being paid in hand under the said lease up to that time. The word "one" erased and twenty-one changed to twenty-two which is the time the said lease will expire and the said one thousand dollars will fall due -

I the clerk of the County Court of Jefferson County in the State of Kentucky do certify that on this day this deed was produced to me in my office and proved to be the act and deed of the above named Thomas ARMSTRONG by the oaths of John BARTLETT and David STANDIFORD, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto - whereupon I have recorded the same deed in my office -
