JOSEPH BARTLETT to JOHN CARMICLE

This indenture made and entered into this first day of April in the year 1819 between Joseph BARTLETT and Nancy his wife of the state of Indiana and county Huntuson [Huntington or Harrison?] of the one part and John CARMICLE of the County of Jefferson and state of Kentucky of the other part witnesseth that the sd Joseph BARTLETT & wife for and in consideration of the sum of ninety dollars to them in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged hath sold and by these presents do bargain sell release and confirm unto the said John CARMICLE all that tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Jefferson and bounded as followeth Beginning at a white hickory poplar & dogwood on James MERRIWETHER’s line thence S. to a maple sugartree & elm on James DOWDLE’s line, thence S 85 W 61 ˝ to a beech and sugartree, thence N 15 W 32 poles to three sugartrees in MERRIWETHER’s line, thence to the beginning containing nineteen acres and three fourths be the same more or less unto him the said John CARMICLE and his heirs forever with all and singularly its appurtenances and the sd Joseph BARTLETT and Nancy his wife doth hereby warrant and defend the sd tract or parcel of land from the claim or claims of all and every person or persons whatever. In testimony whereof the sd Joseph BARTLETT and wife have hereunto set their hands & affixed their seals the day and date first first [sic] written.

I the clerk of the County Court of Jefferson County in the state of Kentucky do certify that on this day Joseph BARTLETT and Nancy his wife came personally before me in my office and acknowledged and delivered the foregoing deed as and for their act and deed that I examined the said Nancy priv[at]ely and apart from the said Joseph her husband and having shewn and explained the said deed deed [sic] to her she again acknowledged and delivered the same deed as and for her act and deed and declared she had done so of her own free will and consent without the threats persuasions or compulsion of her said husband and was willing the said deed should be recorded and did not wish to retract her said acknowledgements and that I have recorded the same in my office. Witness my hand this 21st day of October 1820.
