PROJECT: Use FamilyTreeDNA.com (FTDNA) for Y-chromosome testing of BARTLETT descendants, and compare DNA results to determine which lines are part of distinct BARTLETT ancestries. Use 12- and 25-marker tests. A 23/25, or better, match among persons with the same surname indicates a 99.9% probability of a common ancestor. With a 25/25 match there is a 50% probability that the common ancestor is 7 generations or less. In addition to the scores on each of the 12 or 25 markers, FTDNA also reports on the Haplogroups. Anthropologists have used DNA results to define groups of people on a Philogenetic tree of Homo sapiens. These Haplogroups are a classification tied to deep ancestry (say 1,000s or 10,000s of years), which indicate the earliest geography/migration of that group. It's like mapping the earliest genealogy of mankind and how they migrated. FTDNA uses the information provided by participants to suggest the haplogroup for each result. Post information about the BARTLETT DNA project and view results at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cst/bartlett/dnainfo.htm
May 1, 2003. The latest status includes 4 additions, marked with an *. The biggest news is confirmation of the Thomas of Essex line. There were also 2 new lines withing the R1b common Haplotype - one from GA, one from NC, neither tied into any lines we have samples for. There was also one new line in the I unique haplotype, probably from ME.

Results of the BARTLETT DNA Project:
So far we have identified 3 haplogroups (with descriptions from FTDNA):
1. R1b = the most common haplogroup in European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10 to 12 thousand years ago. This lineage is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype. (sometimes reported to be 1% of all FTDNA results)
2. E3b = believed to have evolved in the Middle East. It expanded from the Mediterranean during the Pleistocene Neolithic expansion. It is currently distributed around the Mediterranean, southern Europe, and in north and east Africa.
3. I = lineages are nearly completely restricted to northwestern Europe. These would most likely have been common within Viking populations.
Descendants with paper-trail genealogies to the following BARTLETT ancestors are shown below by FTDNA Kit #
Haplogroup R1b: The following descendants all have the very common R1b haplotype
#6222: Joseph BARTLETT b c1765 VA (lived TN) to John to Martin [ Team #11 ]
13-24-14-10-11-14-12-12-11-13-13-29-18-9-11-11-11-24-15-20-29-15-16-18-18#7378: Joseph BARTLETT b c1765 VA (lived TN) [ Team #11 ] (24/25 match with #6222)

13-24-14-10-11-14-12-12-11-13-13-29-18-9-11-11-11-24-15-20-29-15-16-18-18----------
#6135: James BARTLETT b 1760 VA (20/25 match with #6222 - indicating a possible match)
13-24-14-10-11-14-12-12-11-13-13-29-18-9-10-11-11-25-15-19-29-16-17-17-18#7608: Starling BARTLETT b c1783 VA (lived GA) (24/25 match with #6135)
13-24-14-10-11-14-12-12-12-13-13-29-18-9-10-11-11-25-15-19-29-16-17-17-18----------
#8316: Thomas BARTLETT b1670 VA (Essex Co, VA) [ Team #7 ] (10/12 match with #6222)
13-23-14-11-11-14-12-12-11-13-13-29#8366* Thomas BARTLETT b1670 VA (Essex Co, VA) [ Team #7 ] (11/12 match with #8316)
13-23-13-11-11-14-12-12-11-13-13-29-17-9-9-11-11-25-15-19-30-15-16-18-19----------
#8557* Thomas BARTLETT b c1782 GA (17/25 match with #8366)
13-23-14-9-11-15-12-12-12-13-13-29-17-9-10-11-11-25-14-19-29-14-16-18-19----------
#8049* William BARTLETT of NC [not Warren Co, NC] (15/25 match with #8366)
14-23-14-12-11-14-12-12-12-14-13-30-17-9-10-11-11-25-15-19-29-16-16-18-18
#6016: John BARTLEY c1725 to dau/Phoebe (closest match is 21/25 with #6135)
13-23-14-10-11-15-12-12-11-13-13-29-18-9-10-11-11-25-14-19-30-16-17-17-18#6007: John BARTLEY c1725 to dau/Phoebe (not a close match)
13-25-14-11-11-13-12-12-12-13-14-29#7761: John BARTLEY c1725 to dau/Phoebe (25/25 match with #6016)
13-23-14-10-11-15-12-12-11-13-13-29-18-9-10-11-11-25-14-19-30-16-17-17-18Analysis:
1. All of these are Haplogroup R1b and are grouped separately from other BARTLETTs
2. #6222 & #7278 are 24/25 even though from the same ancestor; so the DNA does, in fact, mutate
3. #7165 & #6222 are 25/25 match indicating 99.9% probability of having a common ancestor, so, based on other, circumstantial evidence, Joseph and Joshua are probably brothers.
4. #6125 & #7608 are 24/25 match indicating 99.9% probability of having a common ancestor; and I'd guess James & Sterling were brothers or 1st cousins [this provides a clear research path for Sterling]
5. #6125/7608 & #6222/7278/7165 differ by 4-5 points, but may link a little further back - probably not siblings.
6. #8316 & the others differ by 2-3 points in 12, so clearly Joseph/Joshua and James and Sterling BARTLETT are more closely aligned with Thomas BARTLETT bc1670 than with any other BARTLETT group below.
7. #6016/6007/7761 From the paper genealogy it was unclear if Phoebe was daughter or daughter-in-law of John BARTLEY, so since these DNA results don't match #5960/7744 below, it appears she was a daughter, and the DNA can now be used to research/determine paternity. From #7744 below (and the paper genealogy) it is clear these descendants are still BARTLEY/BARTLETTs, just not through the male line.
8. *#8366 & #8316 have 11/12 match, which tends to confirm this line.
9. *#8557 is in this Haplogroup, but this GA line does not have a close match with any other existing line.
10. *#8049 is in this Haplogroup, but this NC line does not have a close match with any other existing line.
Haplogroup E3b: The following descendants all have the relatively unusual E3 haplotype:
#5960: Thomas BARTLETT c1705-1783 of Richmond Co, VA to Thomas (Fauquier/Harrison Co, VA) [ Team #3 ]
13-24-13-10-16-18-11-12-11-13-11-31-16-9-9-11-11-25-14-20-34-15-17-17-18#6066: Nimrod BARTLETT b<1765 (of sc; ky; ar) (12/12 match with #5960)
13-24-13-10-16-18-11-12-11-13-11-31#7744: Thomas BARTLETT c1705-1783 of Richmond Co., VA to John (Culpeper/Fluvanna Co., VA) (24/25 match with #5960)
13-24-13-10-16-18-11-12-11-13-11-31-16-9-9-11-11-25-14-20-35-15-17-17-18#7925: Lewis BARTLETT b c1819 VA (24/25 match with #5960; 23/25 with #7744)
13-24-13-10-16-18-11-12-11-13-11-31-16-9-9-11-11-25-14-20-34-15-16-17-17-18 (26 markers?)Analysis:
1. #5960 & #7744 are 24/25 match which should confirm John BARTLEY c1725 and Thomas BARTLETT c1730 are sons of Thomas BARTLETT c1705.
2. #6066 & #5960/7744 are a 12/12 match, so probably Nimrod BARTLETT, 1790s in SC, is related to Thomas BARTLETT c1705 of Richmond Co., VA. There is much more research to do to find the link.
3. #7925 & #5960 are 23/25 match. We need to work Lewis BARTLETT b1819 VA back to a link with Thomas BARTLETT c1705 of Richmond Co., VA [late news: Lewis may be from WVA, which would probably make him a missing descendant of Thomas BARTLETT c1730].
4. This group is an unusual haplotype which does not tie to other BARTLETTs in Colonial VA, so this leads to the conclusion that there are at least two BARTLETT lines from VA.
Haplogroup I: This is an unusual haplotype.
#7680: Joseph BARTLETT c1630-1702 of Newton, MA [ Team #5 ]
14-23-16-10-15-16-11-13-11-13-12-29-15-8-10-11-11-27-15-20-26-12-15-15-16#8532* James BARTLETT b1845 of Crawford Co, IL (maybe father b ME) (different from #7680)
13-23-16-10-14-14-11-14-11-12-11-28-15-8-9-8-12-23-15-19-29-13-15-16-17Analysis:
1. *Census indicates father of #8532 was b. ME, so both BARTLETTs from this haplotype appear to be from New England.
The other results do not tie to male BARTLETT lines, but will be very useful in other Surname projects.
*New results since last report.
