THE LETTERS OF WALTER BARTLETT
Dated 1964 - 1966
Written To and Excerpts Contributed By
Jo Carolyn Beebe
Back in the early 1960s, I learned that Daniel BARTLETT, one of the sons of Joshua and Winnie (WILLIAMS) BARTLETT, had moved to Missouri in 1844. He first lived in St. Joseph, MO and later settled in Bethany, Harrison Co, MO. Hoping that Daniel’s descendants would have some information about Joshua’s father, I wrote to the County Clerk requesting any information about early BARTLETT settlers. His reply stated that they had no records of BARTLETTs that early. He added, "We have some BARTLETTs living in our town. Walter BARTLETT, Orley BARTLETT, Mrs. Raleigh BARTLETT, and Mrs. Ray BARTLETT. Also Susan BARTLETT." I wrote to Walter BARTLETT asking if he knew of Daniel BARTLETT. We carried on a delightful correspondence for several years. Following are some excerpts from Walter’s letters:
Bethany, Missouri
October 5, 1964
Dear Mrs. Beebe,
The Daniel BARTLETT you speak of was my grandfather. He came from Tennessee to Harrison County, Missouri in 1844. Joseph and Nathan BARTLETT were his brothers who located near Blue Mountain, Mississippi. Several of the younger BARTLETTS moved to Harrison County. Elmith BARTLETT, Roddie BARTLETT, and Norman BARTLETT. Norm BARTLETT moved back to Miss.
I knew Daniel BARTLETT real well. He lived at my father's house when I was a small boy. He died in 1888. I had better tell you how old I am or you will wonder. I was born July 14th, 1877.
I started an implement and machinery business at Ridgeway, Mo. In 1900. One of the first new buggies I ever sold was to a young man who was a close friend of mine by the name of John Beebe who lived at Cainsville, Mo. John Beebe always told me that I guaranteed him to get the girl he wanted or I would have to take the buggy back. John never asked me to take the buggy back. I am wondering if this John Beebe could
be some of your people. [Not that I know of, although my husband’s name is John Beebe. jcb]
Sincerely yours,
Walter BARTLETT

Dear Mrs. Beebe,
Just in receipt of your most welcome letter. I am glad to help you if I possibly can as I am very much interested the same as you are. You probably will not hear from me for about two weeks as I am going to Kansas this coming week and will come back through Warrensburg, Mo. and look through my father’s old papers and see if I can find anything of interest.
When I get back home you will hear from me as soon as I get back home.
Sincerely yours,
Walter BARTLETT

Dear Mrs. Beebe,
Please do not think I had forgotten you. You cannot depend too much on an old man that has already used up a lot of borrowed time.
I have been out in Kansas attending dog races and have not got down to Warrensburg Mo. to see if I could get all the information but I think I will get around to it in the next week or so.
No wonder you do not get any answers to your letters. I am an old man eighty seven years old running around over the country watching dog races. These Grey Hounds can sure run. I know it sounds silly but I am having lots of fun. Some of these days I may get old and have to stay at home.
Have patience and I will get your letter answered one of these days.
Sincerely yours,
Walter BARTLETT

(This letter was actually written by Walter's sister
who signed Walter's name to the letter.)
Dear Mrs. Beebe,
I am sorry I have been so slow in answering your inquiries as to the family tree.
No, I have no old family Bible. . . .
My father, Alexander Doniphon BARTLETT was the youngest son of Daniel BARTLETT. He was born March 9, 1851. He died October 16, 1935. The following are my brothers and sisters:
Roy BARTLETT, born April 19, 1879-died August 19, 1877
Clara BARTLETT, born November 24, 1882
Mary Alice BARTLETT SMITH, born May 2, 1885
Carlisle BARTLETT, born September 5, 1887-died June 30, 1929
Nell BARTLETT LATIMER and Ned BARTLETT (twins) born April, 1892. Ned died August 3, 1892.
George Vest BARTLETT, born November 27, 1894
Martha Josephine BARTLETT, born March 21, 1901
I can give you no information about Winnie WILLIAMS, but if we are descendants of the Daniel Boone clan I see why my family are always troubled with the wanderlust.
Sincerely yours,
Walter BARTLETT

Dear Mrs. Beebe,
I am sending you the papers I promised you some time ago, all we could get, which was not enough. I am planning on being in Kansas City tomorrow. I have a sister living there who is in possession of quite a
lot of papers pertaining to the BARTLETT tribe. I will copy this off and send it to you.
About the Daniel BOONE connection I never heard of that before but I wouldn't be surprised at one of them marrying Daniel BOONE's sister. I never heard of one of them denying anything they were accused of.
Respectfully yours,
Walter BARTLETT

Dear Cousin Jo Carolyn Beebe,
This letter would have been wrote some time ago. My grand and great-grandchildren want to be extra good to me. They all think I am too young to take care of my own business and filed your letter away where I was unable to find it until just now.
I think I told you I had lost this history but it finally turned up with some other papers where it did not belong.
It gives the BARTLETT history from away back in the fifteenth century before they migrated to London England from France. They spelled BARTLETTA. Later on they dropped the a off.
About two years ago I was going through Arizona and stopped at a filling station to get my car serviced. The gentleman waiting on us saw something in the car that caused him to ask me my name and he told me his wife's maiden name was BARTLETT and her folks came from eastern Tennessee. He said she was an awful good woman but she always thought she was right. I told him there was no doubt but what she was one of my cousins as we were all that way.
I still have lot of fun like dogs and horses and I drive my own car and go where I please.
I had another birthday the 14th of this month. I guess I am 88 years old now.
August 23, 1965
Dear Cousin Jo Carolyn,
Will try my best to get these papers off to you this morning. Have been gadding around so much don't get anything done.
Just wondered if you knew Norman BARTLETT. He is one of the BARTLETTs that lived near Blue Mountain, Miss. Would like to hear from him if he is still alive. Seemed like a real nice man. He was a young man when he lived here many years ago.
Sincerely yours,
Walter BARTLETT

Dear Cousin Jo,
So nice to get your letter. Yes, I had another one of them birthdays the 89th one. I am going to keep having them as long as possible. I enjoy them and ever thing and every body even most of the Republicans, most of them are nice people, if you screen them over real close. You can find little something wrong but they are alright. Harrison County is my county. They are about two thirds Republican. I run for County Treasurer and Collector in 1932. I led the ticket. Got 325 more votes than F.D. Roosevelt did in our county. All through the campaign that year we pled with the people to follow us to the promised land. Guess they liked it. They appointed me Post Master for fifteen years until I got too old to see. I am beginning to get old and dotty and like to brag on myself and I don't care who knows it.
Jo, I sure would like to see you. I read your letters and imagine I just know the kind of person you are. I know I like you. I have done lots of living in my time am going to keep it up long as I am here. My wife and two children are gone. I have an apartment in a Hotel here in Bethany. Everybody is good to me but my, how lonesome I get.
I have a friend in California that has spent a lot of time and money looking this BARTLETT tribe up. He told me we were some pumpkins as we have the right to let our Swans and ducks swim in certain streams. He told me very few people had such rights and it was a great honor. It seems as though they had done some great service for their Government to receive grants of land and have the privilege to swim ducks in the creeks and build a Castle for them to live so they could protect themselves. He promised to give me lot more information. When he sends me this you will get a copy.
You spoke about you had been doing lots of work. Jo be careful about that as it might make an old woman out of you too soon. Hope this finds you bright and happy.
I wrote several letters to "Cousin" Walter after receiving his last letter, but I heard nothing from him after the August, 1966 letter. His grandchildren/great-grandchildren either filed my letters away or destroyed them. Perhaps he died about then. He would have been 89 years old.
It was great fun getting letters from him. I felt like he really enjoyed our correspondence.
The information which Walter sent me was a copy of Joshua BARTLETT's will as well as The Ancestors And Descendants Of Samuel Coan BARTLETT by Stacy Lavinia BARTLETT and Pearl BARTLETT, written in 1924. I found no connection of my family to Samuel Coan BARTLETT. His ancestry dates back to George BARTLETT and Mary Cruttenden who were in Guilford, Connecticut in 1639.
The following is information obtained from Miss Harriett BARTLETT of Palos Verdes, CA, contained in a letter to Miss Bess B. BARTLETT of Booneville, MS written on June 25, 1956, as given to W.M. Anderson,
Booneville, MS on August 11, 1964 and in turn passed on to Jo Carolyn Beebe:
