SPOTSYLVANIA CO., VA
Spotsylvania County was formed in 1721 from Essex, King William, King and Queen Counties, VA and was one parish called St. George. In 1730 this parish was divided into St. George's and St. Mark's. In 1734 St. Mark's Parish, lying in the upper portion of the county, became the County of Orange, containing all of what is now Orange, Madison, Culpepper and Rappahannock Counties. In March of 1769-70 St. George's parish was once again divided, with the new parish being called Berkeley and lying within the boundary of Spotsylvania County.
