George Harter Bisseywas born February 21, 1867 in Clay County, Illinois. He was one of eleven children born to Henry Jackson and Eliza (Long) Bissey.
Alice (Fulkerson) Bissey
was born on September 11, 1870 in Clay County, Illinois. She was the daughter of John and Mahala A. (Clawson) Fulkerson. She apparently went by the nickname 'Allie'. Alice was only three years old when her mother died in 1873. Shortly after her mothers death, her father, John Fulkerson, moved back to Indiana and left her with her grandparents, Oliver and Elizabeth Clawson. It's not known as to why John Fulkerson did not take Alice with him when he returned to Indiana. In one of the letters mentioned in the next paragraph, Oliver Clawson states, " we have not had any word form John Fulkerson for some time but we are looking for him to come after Alice we have concluded to let her go her chance for school is so poor here that we thought it would be best for her to go." However, Alice never returned to live with her father. She married George about 6 months after this letter was written by Oliver.
Several old letters written by Alice when she was a teenager were recently located. The letters add some insight into Alice's younger days before she married George. She makes reference to George, her future husband, in a couple of the letters. In one she states that "George Bissey and Nelson Pierce had a little row and George gave Nelson a little thrashing." One of the letters is written by Alice's grandfather, Oliver Clawson, who Alice went to live with after her mother's death. All of the letters have been transcribed and are located on the Alice Fulkerson letters page.
