Carol,
I have found a link between the Connecticut and Virginia Butterys through my ancestor William Buttery. I have read some of your older online postings regarding the Virginia Butterys and thought you might be interested in this info. If you have any other info on the Virginia Connecticut Buttery's, I will be every interested. You may recall that several years ago I sent you info from the National Archives on William's Revolutionary war service because it included the name of his wife, Abigail. Well, I recently found Revolutionary War service records in the online catalog for the archives of the Library of Virginia for a William Buttery. I sent for all of the info and it shows that William was first a soldier from Virginia, part of the quota of U.S Revolutionary troops requested from that state. Then, in 1777, shortly before his term of service with the Virginia troops ended, he and several others enlisted with the continental troops in Pennsylvania. His service with the continental line from 1777 on is what is documented in his pension papers in the national archive. The papers in the Library of Virginia include several affidavits from officers in the Virginia troops who verify his service and subsequent enlistment in the Pennsylvania line. That info is the link I have been searching for for a long time.

• Research Note

My wife Fay, who has not completed her family research has some information on Father Buttery. Zachariah Buttery (c1785=1827 of Virginia m.Sally Britts of Virginia about 1805, and they came to Wilton, Conn. about 1806. Children included William, Silas, Sherman, John, and others. Found Zachariah and his wife and some of his family in a little cemetery in Wilton Ct.(The St. Matthews Episcopal Church). Will try to call you again Sunday afternoon, April 18th to discuss what info we might exchange and the best means of accomplishing that end. Fay would like info on her great grandfather, John Buttery (son of Zachariah) like the Civil War Records you apparently have been able to locate.

• Research Note

This genealogy stuff can get very convoluted. Fay asked me to let you know that after going over some the latest material we got from Wilton we have decided to change great grandfather's. I hope they're not watching over us to closely or they might wonder what we're up to. Based on the latest info it looks as though John Buttery who was married to Ann Stevens was really the son of William Buttery and not Zachariah. Both William and Zachariah were, along with others, the sons of "Colonel" or "General" Buttery who was also known as Wllliam and lived in the Wilton CT area. I'm not sure what I've written makes a lot of sense to you but, if it does, is it what you may have concluded as well. We'd be interested if you agree or not. Hope your Utah weather is better than our CT weather inasmuch as today is a rainy. I guess we should be glad we're not in the tornado belt. Keep in touch.

• Military Service, 1775 - , , , Pennsylvania

Colonel Buttery - also called General Buttery, from reason I have ben unable to discover - resided on Sear Hill, Wilton. He was a Revolutionary Soldier, settling here after his enlistment had expired. He is without doubt, the Buttery who served in Penn. line - his pension papers (see last session 1818 166h cong.) stating so - though family tradition has it he came from VA. His name recorded as William Buttery. His wife (name unknown as yet) was of English extraction, though probably not of English birth. They were alive in 1812 I believe.

According to pension records he was 68 (April 2, 18181) so born 1750 he died 7/27/1831. He resided on Seer [sic] Hill south west of Justus K. Raymonds house.
