Since he supposedly died in 1863, I found one Lewis Denny in the 1860 census, Ward 2, Rochester, Monroe, New York. He was 70 years old, md to Jane, age 68. He was born in N.J. and she in NY. 28,000 in real estate and 6,000 in personal property for him and 4,000 in personal property for her.

Conrad Brooks Denny, the DAR-listed descendant, is listed in an Ancestry.com database for Rochester.

I could not find him in the 1850 census index, but didn't look very hard either.

Conrad Brooks Denny is listed in the Rochester, NY, Directories for 1888 and 1889 so there should be a death record for him. (died May 12, 1898)

Hi Carol,

Here is what I've been able to find out.

>From the 1860 census, the household sequence is:
S. Burch
H. Burch
N. Shepard
T. Van Tine
J. Van Etten

The 1859 map of Niles (probably compiled a year or two earlier) has:
(what is now Rowe Rd, travelling west)
S&H Birch
J. Frair (two properties)
(what is now Twelve Corners Rd / CR71B, travelling south)
J.B. Striker
A. Striker
(at the intersection of what is now Vanderstouw Rd)
N.N. Shepard (two properties)
J. Van Ellen
(last house before what is now Richardson Rd)

The previous map, from 1853 for the same geography has:
H. Birch
S. Cudeback (Frair #1)
Hall (1859 Frair #2)
A. Stryker
G. Vanarsdall (1859 N.N. Shepard #1)
(1859 N.N. Shepard #2 not on the map)
J. Vanetten

The next map, from 1875 for the same geography has:
S. & H. Birch
J. Frair
(no property where 1858 Frair #2 / 1853 Hall was)
B.S.
S.S. Bevier (1859 J.B. Striker)
A.W. Baker (1859 A. Striker)
H. Ellis (both 1859 N.N. Shepard #1 & #2)
F. B Cuykendall (1859 J. Van Ellen)

By searching using S. Birch I found the following on the 1870 census (NY
Cayuga Niles P 40, 41):
S. Birch
H. Birch
C. Maston
J. Frair
(from here it the count skips over to what is now Rt 38A to the east)
Next I searched on H. Ellis and found my way back to Twelve Corners Rd (NY
Cayuga Niles P 19)
T. Parcel (not on the map)
H. Ellis
J. VanEtten
F. Cuykendall
A. VanEtten

My theory:
Thomas Van Tine rented the former G. Vanarsdall house from N.N. Shepard just to the east of the pointed intersection between
Vanderstouw and Twelve Corners Rd. Based on aerial maps, it appears the other (newer) Shepard house is still there. The Vanarsdall house was gone by 1904. Probably when the property transferred from Shepard to Ellis between 1865 and 1870, Thomas Van Tine and family were forced to move, although if you read on, it may not have been far.

The historical maps are too large to send, but you can download all of them
from the following website:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycayuga/maps.htm

The following should take you directly to the intersection showing the surviving Shepard house:
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=1913&y=23716&z=18&w=1

Other notes from my files:

I have photocopies of notes from Leslie Luther, late historian for Southern Cayuga County. These are undated, but probably from 1950's or early 1960's. From the Rosecrans file (my mother's family) are the following references:

1. Large Tree (my ref #LL011), showing Isaac Eugene (s. of Coonrod Rosecrans & Jane White) m. Mariam E. Van Tine. Several children and grandchildren are also shown.

2. From a sheet of transcribed news clippings (#LL012; similar entry on #LL014):
Mar. in Owasco [Cayuga County], 12-31-1874, by Rev. H. Yates, Eugene Rosecrans of Mor[avia] & Miss Marian Van Tine of Niles.
3. Another sheet of transcribed clippings (#LL018):
(Fordyce-3-60) Isaac Eugene Rosecrans d. at home of dau. Mrs. J.M. Conklin on Smith St. Mor, 9-13-1924, b. town Mor. 1852, son of Coonrod & Jane. Entire life in this town. Leaves 4 dau., Mrs. J.M. Concklin & Mrs. Clinton Smith of Mor., Mrs. R.J. Keller of Aub[urn] & Mrs. Fred Sweet of Dr[yden?] & son Herbert Rosecrans of Cort[land]. Bur. Ind. Md. Cem. [Indian Mound Cemetery, Moravia] See Herbert. [NOTE - Isaac is not in the transcribed records for Indian Mound nor have I seen a monument near his father or brother.

4. #LL016 (the Herbert reference):
In Quaker [Church] Cem - Double hs[headstone]. ROSECRANS - Herbert R. 1885-1947 -- Maud L. his wife, 1877-19-- (Note: L.L.L. [Leslie L. Luther] broke Herb's leg at Montville school c. 1895

This would put Marian/Mariam/Mary's birthdate abt. 1855. I just realized from this that Sarah's b-date does not match my records (1882).

7. Finally, this will be the most relevant for you. I found in my collection the obituary for Electa Van Tyne (from your notes I now know this was 1874).

What I derive from this is that Electa was a Devinney; (her brother being Isaac Devinney). Based on the cemetery transcriptions for the West Niles Cemetery, her parents are likely David Devinney, d Nov 23, 1874 ae 74 yrs and Catherine, wife of David DeVinney, d Mar 7, 1867 ae 59 yrs.

Back to the maps. Pennyville (later Omro) was at the intersection of what is now Oak Hill, Church and Quarry Roads. It just happens that almost exactly 1 mi north of Church Rd on Quarry Rd is where the Devinney's are shown on the 1853 and 1859 maps. Go another mile and Quarry Rd becomes...Vanderstouw Rd. The distance from the Devinney's to the Vanarsdall house is about 2 1/2 miles on the same road. Unfortunately the only maps that have the names of the farms is from 1904 and "Stone Quarry Farm" is not shown. You don't suppose this is where Quarry Rd got its name???

I grew up near Moravia but moved after college. All of my family still lives in the area and I get back there several times a year. As noted, my grandfather Albert Rosecrans is 90 and doing well. When I see him at Christmas I will be sure to ask him where his uncle "Gene" was buried and if he remembers his wife.

I may have more notes. I'll let you know what I find.

West Niles, Dec. 14. "In the midst of life, we are in death." This proverb was never more fully illustrated, than in the case of Electa Vantyne, wife of Thomas Vantyne, who died very suddenly at her residence, one mile north of Pennyville, better known as "Stone Quarry Farm." She had not been feeling very well for some time, being troubled with the heart disease, but not so much but what she kept about her household duties most of the time. On the day and evening previous, she had been at work with her daughter, (a young lady), preparing a room, working until quite late hours in the evening.

---On the morning following she awoke at her usual hour, and was about her duties, when she clasped her hands on her breast and said she felt so queer, and requested her daughter to bring her some water before she fainted, but before she could get to her with the water, she fell from her chair, on the floor, and was dead before a helping hand could reach her. She leaves a husband and one daughter to mourn her loss. She was a kind mother, a good wife, and an excellent neighbor; lending a helping hand in all cases of distress. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Horatio Yates, pastor of the Owasco M.E. Church, who took for his text, Rev. 6,8 "And I looked and beheld a pale horse and his name that sat upon him was Death," which he handled with a masterly hand. Her remains were interred in the West Niles Cemetery, by the side of her father and mother, the former having died about two weeks ago at the residence of [his] son, Isaac Devinney.
