Birth Notes for Child: Elizabeth Dykes
At the time of her birth, Elizabeth's family lived in a leased
16th century limestone cottage on Newton Street on the north
side of the village
Death Notes for Child: Elizabeth Dykes
a buggy accident caused by a runaway horse. The coroner's
report said: "On the 9th day of August A. D. 1902 the coroner
was notified of the death of Elizabeth York, who died at James
Tucker's ranch, 28 miles above Dewey's Flat on the Big Hole
River; and from the statements of the sons of the deceased, it
was ascertained that said deceased had been injured in a
runaway and that a Doctor was called, but did not arrive until
after death. This being all the information obtainable and
there being no possibility whatever of any foul play being
connected with said death"
General Notes for Child Elizabeth Dykes
From the Big Hole Breezes, August 15, 1902:
Last Friday morning, some time between 11 and 12
o'clock, Mrs. Elizabeth York was dragged to her death in a
runaway. She left the Tucker ranch, at which place she and her
family had made their home for several months, about 10
o'clock, driving alone, and was found by one of H. J. Toomey's
men shortly before 12 o'clock in an insensible condition with
her foot locked in the front wheel while the horse was quietly
grazing. When first seen by the man, the horse was moving
slowly and then stopped. The reins had been tied to the
dashboard of the buggy, and the position of her body between
the wheels would indicate that she was either getting in or out
of the buggy when the animal started. The
unfortunate woman was taken back to the Tucker ranch and her
son Harry came to Wisdom for Dr Towers, who did not get there
until after her death which occured about 4 o'clock in the
afternoon. The doctor said she probably died of concussion of
the brain. The remains were taken to Butte for
burial."
When her parents died, she went to Guernsey, Channel Islands,
with her brother Robert and his wife Susan (Slade) Dyke
A garbled account from the Butte Miner, Sunday,
10 Aug 1902 'Mrs John York, a sister in law to Mrs George
York, the latter residing at 45 West Boardman street, in this
city, was thrown from a buggy in which she was riding near her
home at Divide a few days ago, and from her from her injuries
which she then received she died yesterday morning. The horse,
which was considered a safe animal, took fright while Mrs. York
was driving it. and in shying threw her from the buggy. Mrs
York was formerly a resident of Butte and her body was
yesterday brought to Butte for burial. Interment will take
place this afternoon at Mount Moriah cemetery.'
from the Obituary Column 'Mrs Elizabeth York, age 56, died last
Friday near Divide. Richards Funeral Parlor till Tuesday.
Removed to residence of Mrs George York, 45 W. Boardman where
funeral was held.'
With ten children still at home ranging in ages from Will at 21
downward to baby Bessie at two, Elizabeth homesteaded at
Fishtrap within two months of John's death. The Big Hole Valley
is a 7,500-foot high prairie crenelated on all sides by high,
white mountains.
From The Anaconda Standard, August 10, 1902 under
the headline DRAGGED TO HER DEATH:
Mrs. Elizabeth York, of one of the best known
families ill the Big Hole country, met with a violent death
about 11 o~clock Friday morning at the Chalk bluffs on the Big
Hole River. With her left foot caught in the wheel of the buggy
she was dragged to her death by a spirited horse. Her dead
body was discovered about an hour later by Fred Porter, a
neighbor. He drove four miles with the body to the York ~ch
near Bowen and notified a son, Harry York, of what had taken
place. Harry York drove 12 miles to the Belin ranch, where his
brother, William York was at work. The latter sent word to
Undertaker Richards in Butte. The body was brought to Butte
last night and Coroner Johnson notified. He made an
investigation with the result that he decided an inquest was
unnecessary. The funeral will probably take place on Tuesday.
The arrangements are not yet complete.Mrs. York
was 56 years of age and the widow of John York who died in the
Coeur d'Alenes about eight years ago. She was born on the
Island of Jersey, in the English Channel, and was married
there. With her husband she came to the United States 33 years
ago and in I ~S9 came to Montana. John York was a stock and hay
rancher and made his home in the Big Hole country, where his
thrift made him wealthy. After his death the widow and children
carried on the business and acquired other ranches. Mrs. York
leaves six sons and five daughters. The sons are William,
Hary, John, Eben, Charles and George York. The daughters are
Alice, Cora and Bessie York, Mrs. J. C. Golightly of Golden,
Cob. And Mrs. A. J. Porter of Newcastle, Cob. The last two
named are expected to arrive in Butte on Tuesday morning to
attend the funeral.Mrs. York left her ranch near
Bowen about 10 o'clock Friday morning to drive to the Belin
ranch, which had been recently leased by herself and sons.
She was taking provisions and clean linen to the sons on the Belin ranch.
About four miles from her ranch Mrs. York had reason to leave
her buggy, presumably to tighten a part of the harness. It is
supposed that as she was climbing back into the buggy, the
spirited horse started suddenly causing her foot to slip from
the front axle into the wheel. As the foot caught Mrs. York
fell backward between the front and rear right wheels. The
horse continued and the woman was dragged by the foot, her head
bumping violently on the ground until the horse tired and
stopped. The position of the body when found would indicate
that life was extinct when the horse stopped.Fred
Porter conducts a ranch near that of the Yorks. He started out
about 11 o'clock to visit a neighboring ranch, and came upon
the lifeless body of Mrs. York about noon. The foot of the
woman was still caught in the wheel. The foot and limb were
torn, but no bones were broken. The head of the woman was a
mass of cuts and bruises. The forehead was scraped and bruised
but there were no marks on the face. Porter drove the body to
the York ranch where Harry York was at work. He then notified
his brothers and sisters at the Belin ranch. All were
heartbroken by the news."
With ten children still at home ranging in ages from Will at 21
downward to baby Bessie at two, Elizabeth homesteaded at
Fishtrap within two months of John's death. The Big Hole Valley
is a 7,500-foot high prairie crenelated on all sides by high,
