Hi Carol,

I came upon your rootsweb Van Tine file and noticed that you have Albert Sidney EASLEY m. Viola (Bilo) Josephine VAN TINE 19 Apr 1894 in Quanah, Hardeman, Texas.

This information differs from my family records that were prepared by Viola Josephine VanTine's brother-in-law, George Woodson EASLEY and his son's Carlos EASLEY and Lois EASLEY.

Our records show the following:

*William Elbert EASLEY*, son of John Ellington EASLEY and Sarah Jane CLIETT, b. 15 Jun 1868 in Douglassville, Cass, Texas, USA; d. 25 Apr 1965 Chillicothe, Hardeman, Texas, USA. Married Viola Josephine Van Tine 19 Apr 1893 (I do not have the marriage certificate to verify this date).

They had one child:
Lola Easley b. 8 Jun 1896, Texas; d. 19 Sep 1970, Chillicothe, Hardeman, Texas, USA
Lola married Vernon Hafner, b. 15 Oct 1894, Texas; d. 17 Sep 1969, Chillicothe, Hardeman, Texas, USA.

I have the same parents you have listed for Viola Josephine VAN TINE. What does the (Bilo) mean in your records?

I am interested to know where you picked up the name Albert Sidney EASLEY as Viola's husband.

Thanks for putting this together.

Most sincerely,

Laura Breite (GGranddaughter of George Woodson Easley)

Hi Carol,

I thought you might like a copy of this excerpt:

*William Elbert Easley*
SOURCE: /Our Family Tree 1813-1982 The Easley Times, page 18/ Compiled by Lois Easley

William Elbert Easley was the second child of John Ellington Easley. He came to Big Valley and Chillicothe in 1886 with his family. [He] lived the rest of his life in that area, acquired a considerable amount of property, as well as helping build the community too.

He raised one daughter named Lola, who married Vernon Hafner. William Elbert Easley married Apr 19, 1893, Viola (Vantine) Easley. They helped pioneer the Chillicothe area together. After Lola's parents were gone she lost her husband, Vernon.

After Lola died, they gave a generous amount to schools, churches, cemeteries, hospitals, and their kin. They are buried in the Elbert Easley Plot in Big Valley Cem. Chillicothe, Texas.

Sarah A. Marthing and Willian Van Tine are listed as parents for Ann E. Van Tine Edwards Dowling' on her death certificate. Annie was born in 1826 in New York City, married Eden Edwards (b. 1809-1811 est.), also from NY and had 3 children: William, Sarah and George. They moved to California in 1859 as Eden was a miner. Eden left the family to look for gold and the last documentation I can find, he was still mining in 1880 in Sonora, Ca. Annie divorced him in 1862 in San Francisco and married Madison Dowling, also of NY. They moved to Alameda County approx. 1880 and Madison died by 1890. Annie lived with her daughter, Sarah "Sadie" Hodges, until her death in 1907. She is buried in Oakland. If anyone has information regarding Eden Edwards family or the Marthings and Van Tines, please contact Tina Havelka at havelka92@cs.com

I came across your message and thought I might be able to help with my access to censuses and a couple of other databases. I'm otherwise doing some Martling research in another part of NY State. Ann is listed in the 1850 census with her children William, Sarah and George in the 17th Ward, NYC, pg. 395. They are living in the household of Edwin Edstrom, cabinetmaker, 50, b. New Foundland. Sarah E. Edstrom, presumably his wife, 48, b. NY, children Emily F., 14 and Frances? F., 10. Also in the household are Sarah E. Valentine, 23 and Mary L. Valentine, 20, all b. NY. I suspect this is your Sarah "Marthing," married secondly to Mr. Edstrom, and "Van Tine" should be Valentine, all living together as an extended family. I don't find any of these people other than Ann and several of her children in later censuses. I have access to the 1829 NYC directory, which has a William Valentine at 140 Hester St. and the following Martlings (I find no Marthings in any NYC records): Abraham B., "keeper," City Hall, John, mason, 39 Broome St., William, "lumber-m.," 99 Hamersley (house), 294 Hudson (business). John is in the 1820 and 1830 NYC censuses. In 1820, John has a daughter 10-15 years old. Not exactly right (if Sarah was born about 1802), but with the censuses, they aren't always. Abraham B. is in the 1810 and 1830 censuses, but didn't have a daughter in the right age catagory (not close as with John). Another Abraham and a Daniel are in the 1810 census with a daughter in the right age group, but they aren't in NYC in 1820. Hope this is helpful! Doug

Doug, Thank you for the info. Ann & the Edwards children are also listed in Eastchester with her husband, Eden. It didn't occur to me that they would appear twice in the same census. The time frame is only July to August, so it's hard to understand what was going on. Poverty and/or domestic discord is my guess. Ann's daughter Sadie filled out her death certificate and I assume (again) that she would know the correct last names. I'll need to track down the 4 other daughters of Sarah to know for sure. I found a Wm VanTine living on 11th in NYC in a city directory in 1840, I believe. I belong to several on line sites also, but am always grateful when someone points me in the right direction. There is info in the book, Gotham, relating to Abraham "Bram" Martling and his tavern that was used for early Tammany meetings. Let me know if I can help you in any way. Thanks, Tina

Doug- Thanks to you, I found Mrs. Sarah E. Edstrom, age 60, from NY, buried in Lone Mt cemetery in San Francisco in 1861. She must have moved with the Edwards in 1859. I have yet to find them in the 1860 census and currently conclude that they were on their way west. It's interesting to me that Ann divorced Eden in 1862, the year after her mother died, after 22+ years of marriage. - Tina

Carol, How are Rachel and William Van Tine related? Brother and sister? How are the Van Tines from West Farms related to my Van Tines? They were living within a short distance from Eden Edwards in Eastchester. I have entered all of the data I have on the Van Tines & Marthings in the previous messages. Any info you have would be appreciated also. There is a correction to the previous messages: Frances G. Edstrom is actually James G. Edstrom, though I haven't found any more on that family. Your date for Wm V.T's birth makes him 27yrs older than his wife Sarah. Is that a verified birth year? Thank you for your help. -Tina

Carol, Isn't it possible that the Estate of Sarah VanTine is in reference to the estate left her by the death of her husband, William? Maybe Rachel (as Wm's sister) was expecting some part of the estate to go to her. Sarah Marthing Van Tine Edstrom died in 1861, not 1842. Rachel wasn't old enough to be Wm's mother and she wasn't the mother of the three sisters (Ann Eliza Edwards, Sarah and Mary Van Tine). As was customary in those days, a male was often noted as guardian for minors in the event of a father's death, if the mother wasn't financially able to support them. -How are you related to this VanTine family? I've seen your tree associated with VanTines & Minks but I don't see the connection to my family. Thanks, Tina

My g-g-g-grandfather, Eden Edwards was born in New York in August 1810. He married Ann Eliza Van Tine, dau. of Sarah Marthing & William Van Tine. Their children were William Edwin, Sarah Lee and George W., all born in New York. Eden moved the family to California for the Gold Rush but Ann divorced him in 1862. Eden lived in Sonora, Tuolumne County, for several years and died there in September, 1881. He is buried in the Old Sonora Cemetery. His obituary states that he was known as "Boss Edwards". His son William married Ida Swett. Their children were William Eden, Gertrude, Joseph, Roy K. and Ida. Sarah Lee "Sadie" married George Hodges.Their children were Selden "Ed", Albert, Gertrude, Harry and Louanna. George W. married Martha Wilkinson. Their children were Eva Jane and Arthur Eden. The three Hodges brothers ended up in jail for drugs and burglary. Ed can be found on blacksheepancestors.com. for his time at San Quentin and other prisons. Roy K. Edwards had been a policeman for a while but he ended up slitting the throat of his girlfriend and then his own. These incidents took place circa 1910. The majority of the other relatives were law-abiding Seventh Day Adventists. The families lived in Stockton, Oakland, Groveland and Healdsburg, Ca. A HISTORY OF THE MacMINN ANCESTRY

by Herman S. MacMinn
Written between 1903 and 1905
Transcribed and Edited by Mary Rocamora, M.A., 2000

[The document is not paged which makes complete reference difficult.]

On September 17th, 1835, John Edwards married Isabel Jane Vantine in Tazewell County. Gideon Edwards wrote a letter on January 21, 1838 from Dillon to his brother James who was in Merrittstown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. At this time he was living with a son at Dillon, who had a family. Three months later, on April 20, 1838, Gideon Edwards died at age sixty years and eight months. His wife survived him until April 19, 1855, when she died at age seventy nine years, five months and twenty two days. In the year 1839, John Edwards moved to Jefferson County, Iowa, where he took up a homestead. Here he devoted the remainder of his life to farming, remaining within three miles of where he first settled until his death on March 16, 1879. He was married September 17, 1835 and was the father of twelve children, nine of whom were living in September 1885.

"Aunt has gone back home. I will now give you the names of the children that were born in the last year. Winifred Humphrey, born April 12, 1887. John L. Walton, born December 27, 1886. The notice to the Press is here given. 'On last Thursday, August 11, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Hoskins west of town, was the scene of a very pleasant and enjoyable affair. It was a family re-union and a birth-day given in honor of Mrs. Lydia Kinsey of Pekin, Illinois, who is visiting them and who was 80 years of age on that day. There were present in all 55 persons, among whom were F. N. Hackney and family, Phoebe Humphrey, I. J. Edwards, Lewis Edwards, Samuel Vantine Sr. and Samuel Jr. and family, Abraham Hollopeter and family, Stanford Humphrey and family,William Edwards and family, Mary J. Crumley, Mrs. W. D. Pringle, Dr. and Mrs. Mealey, Mrs. Joseph Kendall, Mary Henshaw, Charles Meyer and family, Miss Kirkpatrick, Elmer and Carrie Swartzwelter. At the dinner hour a rich repast was served the guests which was heartily enjoyed and to which all did ample justice. After dinner was over, Mrs. Kinsey was made the recipient of a number of useful and valuable presents by her by her friends as mementos of this memorable occasion."

Dear Carol,

Thank you so very very very much for contacting me. Isabel [called Jane most of her life] has been a deep dark unsolved mystery to me for some years now. I first had her name as Van Istine, then Valentine. Now you have her as Vantine, which is probably the correct name [Dutch, do you think?]. She is my husband, Bill's ggrandmother. Her son Samuel moved to Wallowa county, Oregon in 1889. Then in the fall of 1893 moved to Jackson county. He died in 1922 from infection caused by a wood splinter that went into his cheek when he was cutting firewood. Samuel was Bill's grandfather.

I have tried unsuccessfully also to fine Southey, Ohio, and had decided either it was an error or that the small town no longer existed, but could not find any reference to it. Scioto makes much more sense. Now, I will try to find out where Samuel Vantine came from.

Are you related to them?

Thanks again, for contacting me. Isabel was born in 1817, so if Samuel is her father, she was only about 5 when he died. Does this agree with your records? I have a lot of information about Isabel Jane and her husband John Dillon Edwards if you are interested.

Again, thank you so much for contacting me.

Dear Carol,

I never did answer your question about the source for Isabel Jane's death. She died in 1900 in Pleasant Plain, Penn Township, Jefferson County, Iowa where she and John had lived from 1839 until their deaths. I have a copy of Isabel Jane's will and a citation from the death index. Think I may have a bit more information on her, but need to dig to find it.
