Frank Dougherty has this much from the will. It's on my list to find but since it was never probated, it's not indexed and I'll have to pay for a search.
"The will of Abraham Vantine (sic) of Beekman Precinct was dated 28 April 1760. Executors were "to put money at interest toward support and bringing up of my children till they all of lawful age. To son Abraham a double portion of all my estate. To daus. Catran, Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth to be paid one equal share after son Abraham has his portion." He appointed friends Leonard Vincent of Beekman and James Germond of Crum Elbow as executors. The will was not signed and was unrecorded but is found in records of the Court of General Sessions in Poughkeepsie."

Dear Carol, I wonder if "son of Schreiner's" might be an occupation and not an established surname. "Schreiner" in German is a synonym for "Tischler", a cabinet-maker (furniture maker). So we then have, "Jacob Gulig, son of the cabinet-maker".
Hendrick Van Gulick and his wife Geertruyt Jochem Willekens came to New Netherland in 1653 with 2 young sons, Jan and Jochem. Jochem settled at Gravesend, Long Island.
Jan Gulick is believed to have been a Mechanic (in the 17th-century this meant a skilled worker) who helped to build a Dutch Church in Harlem, NY. There is a record of one deed, but other than that nothing further is known of him.
It makes sense to me that a cabinet-maker might help in the building of a church -- pulpit, pews, etc.
My speculations ... Dorothy

General Notes (Husband)
NOTES For Carel Fonteyn
One source for this family is through correspondence with Margaret (Mrs. Gene L.) Flint, RR #1, Box #180, Elwood, IL 60421, as of January 23, 1983. She and I corresponded regarding the Smock family and she quotes Bible records including
"In the bible was a piece of paper with the following information: ...... Annaka Married to Jacques Fountain/Hellegon M.[Webbers] to Philip Minthorn..Jacques Fountain had three children, Charles.., Caty.., & Charity [which lived to adulthood]...Charles married Sarah Nolan & had children, Jacques, Mary, Hannah, John, Charles, Sally. Sally Fountain married John Smock,.... Bible was donated by, Lucile Coffey, a descendant of Abraham Smock, to a Museum in Ind."
The second source for this family is through "Notes on the Smock Family," by Richard Smock circa 1899. He has substantially the same information.
This family was based solely on the information above until 19 Feb 1994 when Diane Witt sent me a copy of an original document in her possession. This document was a bond between Charles Fonteyn and the surviving grandchildren of Jacques Fonteyn. The provisions of Jacques' will had caused bickering and they had decided to submit to an arbiter.
The one certain error was that I had Mary Fonteyn as a wife of an unknown Williams. This bond clearly states that she was the widow of Michael Van Dervoort. Since the date of the Williams marriage would have predated this document, obviously it was wrong. The Williams marriage was assumed from Conewago Twp DRC records - and the Mary indicated there is now unknown.

The following bit of history (and the cite) was forwarded to me yesterday.
The location of 'this Indian warfare' is supposed to be Sussex Co., NJ.
Can anyone provide any additional information? Who was Vantine and
especially who was 'the lad called Titsort?'
> .... the General Assembly on August 12, 1758, cited John Vantine and a
> lad called Titsort, and nine others who accompanied them, for bravery in

Hi, Carol -- My name is Sharon Smith-Lenox. I live in Palo Alto,
California, and based on my review of your Website, I believe that we are
cousins. My sister and my two cousins are "tag teaming" on our family
history research. (They do the computer stuff while I am the local history
and original documentation person.) Anyway, we recently got a breakthrough
on our Fonteyn line through the Vanderbilt line. As a result, we found your
website. I have to commend you, what a resource, and what a project!
Only four generations of our branch are shown on your family tree. I'd be
happy to work with you if you want to fill in that section.
My Fonteyn line is as follows (I'll use your numbers for reference):
7th Great Grandparents : Carel Fonteyn (1) / Catharine de Balie
6th Great Grandparents : Jacques Fonteyn (14)/ Anna Webber
5th Great Grandparents : Catherine Fonteyn (14A) / Hendrick Vanderbilt
4th Great Grandparents : Cathina Vanderbilt (14A3) / Jacob Miserolle
3rd Great Grandparents : Lenah Miserolle / Henry Outcalt
2nd Great Grandparents : John Henry Outcalt / Deborah Ann Wale
1st Great Grandparents : Lena Outcalt / Daniel Davidson Van Hise
Grandparents: Bertha Wines Van Hise / William Leonard Smith
Parents: Living
It was interesting to me to watch your Vantines spread across the nation.
My line, on the contrary, had 7 generations in the New Brunswick, New Jersey
area. Actually, it's not until my generation that we started moving out of
New Jersey, and of my six siblings, four still live in New Jersey.
Your website also helped me to understand the extended family linkages that
exist in my family history a little better. I know, of course, that
historically extended family ties were very important. From my research in
the early settlement of Brooklyn I could see a tight linkage between my
Miserolle (Meserolle) and Coevert lines. Now through your family tree, I
can see how the Fonteyns fit into that picture as well, and I can see that
those relationships existed in both Brooklyn as well as New Brunswick.
I'll explain -- First the extended family Brooklyn links.
Annetje Fonteyn (12) marries Mauritz Coevert. Mauritz Coevert is the
brother of my ancestor, Marretje Coevert and the brother-in-law of her
husband, my ancestor, John Messerole, Jr. The children of Annetje Fonteyn
(12) and Mauritz, (123, 124, 125, 126) are the grandchildren of both sets of
my ancestors, Carel Fonteyn and Catherine de Balie, as well as my ancestors,
Teunis Janse Coevert and Barbara Lucas. They (123, 124, 125, 126) are also
first cousins to my ancestor, John Messerole, 3rd.
Then Annetje (12) marries her nephew, Francis Titus. Francis Titus is the
son of the sister of Marretje Coervert, Jannetje Teunise Coevert and of
Titus Syrachs DeVries. He is also a grandchild of my ancestors, Teunis
Janse Coevert and Barbara Lucas, and he is also a first cousin of my
ancestor, John Messerole, 3rd. One of Annetje's sons, Teunis Mauritz
Coevert (123), married Antie Fonteyn (I haven't quite figured out who she
is; I hope it's not his half-sister!) and moves to Monmouth County, New
Jersey.
Other family members are also leaving Brooklyn and moving to the Raritan in
New Jersey. My ancestor, Jacques Fonteyn (14) moves before 1699. Between
1699 and 1705 three out of four of my ancestor, John Messerole Jr.,'s
Coevert brothers-in-law move to the Raritan. John Messerole, Jr. buys land
in New Brunswick and is something of a rabble-rouser in protesting the
Brititsh conquest, but he stays in Brooklyn. However, sometime after 1739,
John Messerole Jr.'s grandson, John Messerole 4th moves to New Brunswick.
This is followed by my ancestor and his son, Jacob Messerole, marrying
Cathina Vanderbilt (14A3), the daughter of Catherine Fonteyn (14A).
Anyway, I think it's a fascinating story and your website helped me fit some
more pieces of the puzzle together. Thanks!
Please let me know if you have any other "puzzle pieces" that fit into the
story or if you know of any other resources that you would recommend. Of
course, I'm happy to help with any additional info that you'd like on our
side.
Regards,
Sharon
