Re. J.K. Demarest
Dear Sir:
You ask for further information in regard to the ten families who left Gettysburg April 30, 1793. They reached this country ten years before I was born. I have no written record of their names, but have often heard them mentioned. The male heads of the families were; my father Jacob Brinkerhoff, his brother Roeleff (Ralph) Brinkerhoff, Thomas Johnson, Abraham Bodine, Charles VanDine, Luke Brinkerhoff, James Dates, Isaac Parsell, Jacob Loyster, and Andrew Johnson. These ten families came in company. On reaching the south end of our country they found some cleared land or Indian fields. Here they concluded to stop and put some cabins for shelter. Having sowed some seed they took time to explore the country and decide where to make a permanent settlement. After two years, they purchased lands near the foot of Owasco Lake and got possession in the Spring of 1795. They organized a religious society in the same year in connection with the Reformed Dutch Church, and met for worship in their log cabins. But soon new settlers came in rapidly, and the summer of 1797 they built the first church edifice in the county. It was of logs 30'x 25' with gallery on three sides. It continued in use until 1815, when it gave place to a larger and better. I should have said my uncle James Brinkerhoff, with his family came here from Adams County after the rest. I think in 1796, you ask if I can tell you anything of an emigration from Adams County to Kentucky. I can only say that I have often heard from my parents that several of their neighbors went to Kentucky about the same time they came here---I can only add that I am in my 81st year. I have reason to be thankful; my health is still good. Of course I cannot expect to remain long but I trust through Divine Grace to be prepared when I shall be called away.
Respectfully yours (signed) John Brinkerhoff• Research Note
According to grandson Albert's biography, his grandfather (Charles) fought in Revolutionary War. A Charles Vantine was an ensign in York County, Pennsylvania, but there was nothing to indicate which Charles it was. According to great-grandson James's biography, his father Albert was the son of Mathew (Matheus) who fought in Revolutionary War and Albert was in the War in 1812 but not in Indexes.• Research Note

Dear Roland:
In a letter from H.A. Scomp to his cousin Judge William C. Smock, 7 August 1903, copied by Marianna C. Hamilton, 1960 ("A History of the Smock Family. HeritageQuest Online.)
In his letter, Scomp identifies a Charles Fonteyn (VanTine) as the eldest son of Charles Fonteyn and Elizabeth Smock and names his children:
"Charles (the son of Charles and elder brother of Sally Smock) had, per my old record six children: viz: Charles, Matthias, Maria, Jacob, Hannah, and Sally. By his second wife: Anna, Syche, Thomas, Jenny. I did not have time to follow out all the children of these brothers and sisters of your great grandmother." [speaking of Sally Smock (1741-1818) who married Jan Smock (1739-1812).

General Notes for Child Mathias J. Vantine
Mathias J. Vantine has to be a descendant of Charles Vantine (md. to Elizabeth Smock) and the only son of Charles Vantine who has sons which are not accounted for is Jacob Vantine md to Alida Post.
In the 1810 Census, Jacob has three sons under the age of ten. One may be Charles Vantine who married Charity Lewis, another may be the John Vantine who married Hannah Kipp and moved to Michigan. David B. Vantine of Lenawee County, Michigan was born in 1812 and may be a younger brother. That leaves Mathias as a probability for the third son in 1810.
In 1820, Jacob has disappeared from the census, but it is probable that he was
only missed because in 1830 he reappears in Mentz.
