Death of LaFayette Vantine.

The town of Chazy lost one of its much esteemed and aged citizens in the death of Lafayette Vantine, which occurred Oct. 3, 1908. During his long and painful illness Mr. Vantine showed great patience and fortitude, fearlessly facing death as it drew nearer each succeeding week. He retained his mental faculties to a remarkable degree to the very end.

The funeral service was held at the residence on the afternoon of Oct. 5, at 2 o'clock, and was attended by many relatives and acquaintances from far and near. Rev. C. A. Bradford officiated and the interment was at Ingraham cemetery.

Mr. Vantine was born April 23, 1824, and married Miss Elizabeth Goodrich of Gouveneur, St. Lawrence county, March 4, 1848. Two children were born to them: Dewitt H. of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Mrs. Nellie E. V. Pardy of Chazy. Mrs. Vantine died January 10, 1874. On January 14, 1875, Mr. Vantine married Mrs. Cornelia Brown Smith, who with the son and daughter survive him.

He united with the M. E. church some 45 years ago. Though never seeking political office, he was ever true to his convictions and beliefs and daring to do what seemed just and right in all daily walks of life. He had been a correspondent for The Sentinel for over forty years.

In all his dealings he was efficient and prompt, thus setting an example worthy of consideration by the rising generation.

Dear Carol,
I have enjoyed your web site very much thanks for all of the reasearch. I have a puzzle that perhaps you might be able to figure out. My grandmother Esther Gould Campbell Koos told me about her grandmother Henrietta Vantine/Vantyne ...Henrietta grew up the daughter of a successful NYC Business man. Henrietta married Daniel Edson Gould from Fairfield County,Conn. He was a teacher as a young man. He also was from a very well known family and very important family in Conn. { Nathan Gould gg grandfather} Henrietta had a sister carrie that she loved very much so much so Henrietta named her daughter Carrie Gould after her. [ my great grandmother] Henrietta also told my grandmother Esther about her brother Charles that she admired very much. That is basicly all I know about the Vantines. Henrietta lived with her daughter in Hillside , N.J. , they also lived in Jersey City. I believe that Henrietta died living with my great grandmother. Henrietta told my grandmother about the grand life style she grew up in and that they had carriages , and rides in Central Park. I had the feeling that her family thought she had married down in her station and perhaps lost contact with the family. except Carrie [Caroline] who married Louis Hahn they all lived in New jersey . The Hahns had a farm up in Suffern ,Ny. Which Henrietta and family went up to visit and had a lot of fun. These are the stories my grandmother told me. I can not find out who her father was, or mother. I have received from a relative of the Hahns a 7 generation Descendant Chart for Carol Fonteyn and catharyn DeBaille. It is very confusing but if you have one .....Henrieta is named 1541629 I really can not tell who the father or who were her relations exactly. I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you very much
Stephanie Mannino
