• Research Note, Personal Letter from James V. Mink to Allan Mink

27 June 1969, 5 typewritten pages

A. Has two large oil portraits of James Vantine and his wife. These are thought to have been painted by an American portrait artist of some note, Charles Smith Jewett, who had studios in the New York City during the 1830's & 40's and later moved to San Francisco.

B. ...James Vantine is the brother of Sarah Jane (Vantine) Mink, probably born somewhere in the Rhinebeck-Fishkill area of Dutchess County on the Hudson River around a hundred miles north of New York City in either 1809 or 1810. James Vantine's obituary, which appeared in the San Francisco Call of Jan. 15, 1867 states: on p. 3, col. 2, "Died. Vantine-- In this city, January 14, Captain James Vantine of the firm of James Vantine & Co., a pioneer merchant of San Francisco, a native of New York, aged 57 years. He was well known throughout the State. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral TOMORROW (Wednesday) MORNING at 11 o'clock, from the Howard Street M.E. Church, between second and third."

C. He was interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery (S. F.), and when that cemetery was disbanded because of a city ruling, his remains were removed to Cypress Lawn Cemetery at Colma, San Mateo Co., Calif. and interred, together with the remains of all others from the Laurel Hill Cemetery, who were unclaimed by their heirs, in a common underground vault.

D. Lots of stuff about the ships, Rolla and Troubador. James walked across the Isthmus of Panama and caught the Troubador which arrived from Matzatlan, May 4, 1849.

E. He was in business in New York and in California. Associated with Ashley A. Vantine, but Mink assumes they were brothers, when distant cousins is all. "The building of Jewett, Scott & Vantine appears to have been used by the Vigilance Committee of 1856 and may be where he got the title of captain."

F. "My father and aunts seem to recall that it was grandfather (James V.) Mink's opinion that James Vantine left his wife in New York and set out for California without the least intention of ever returning. Then in San Francisco, he took up with another woman, who he took as his commonlaw wife."

G. "Now James Vantine's will appears (is disclosed) in the San Franciso Call, Jan 30, 1867, p. 3, col 1. "Will of James Vantine.--The will of James Vantine was filed with the Clerk of the Probate Court yesterday. The testator makes bequests as follows: To Mary Ann Green, daughter of Sarah Green, $5,000; to Sarah Green, the sum of $2,000; to Catherine Boyd, $3,000; to his sister Eliza Lash $250; to his sister, Jane Mink, all the remainder of his property, of every description, for her support and use during the term of her natural life, and at her death to be equally divided amongst her children. Charles C. Carroll and A. H. Titcomb are appointed executors, and all former wills are revoked. The will bears date April 26, 1866."

• Research Note 1491, The New-York Historical Society

2 June 1964; correspondence between Mr. James V. Mink and Geraldine Beard, Chief of the Reading Room.

1. Newspaper record of James' sailing, and find it not in the Tribune but in the New York Herald for January 17, 1849, where he is listed as a passenger on the Rolla.
2. There is, however, an entry announcing the death of a James Vantine of Fishkill, N. Y., on September 30, 1838.

There are some lawsuits in New York City for a James Vantine just before this James leaves for San Francisco. I think one in 1854 may be for him also.
