General Notes for Child Jacob Vantine Jr.

>Death note: 974.796 V4r/Erie Co, NY, Obits as Fd in Files of Buff & Erie Co His Soc

General Notes for Child Mathias J. Vantine

Mathias J. Vantine has to be a descendant of Charles Vantine (md. to Elizabeth Smock) and the only son of Charles Vantine who has sons which are not accounted for is Jacob Vantine md to Alida Post.

In the 1810 Census, Jacob has three sons under the age of ten. One may be Charles Vantine who married Charity Lewis, another may be the John Vantine who married Hannah Kipp and moved to Michigan. David B. Vantine of Lenawee County, Michigan was born in 1812 and may be a younger brother. That leaves Mathias as a probability for the third son in 1810.

In 1820, Jacob has disappeared from the census, but it is probable that he was
only missed because in 1830 he reappears in Mentz.

• Will, Wolfert Weber, 15 Apr 1715 - , Out Ward, New York, New York

New York City Wills, 1706-90
Source Information:
Tami, Chris. New York City Wills, Vol. 11. Orem, UT: Ancestry, Inc., 1999.

In the name of God, Amen. April 15, 1715, in the First year of the Glorious Reign of our Sovereign Lord, King George [1st]. I, WOLFERT WEBBER, of the Out Ward of New York, yeoman, enjoying yet good health, but being ancient. I make my well beloved son-in-law, Philip Minthorne, of the Out Ward, wheel wright, executor. All debts to be paid, and an inventory to be made. I leave to <>my daughter Anneken, wife of Jacques Fonteyn, of Raritan, Somerset County, New Jersey, <>œ2, 10s., as a preference for her birthright, whereby I do utterly cut her off from being my Heiress at Law. I leave to <>my granddaughter, Geertie Fonteyn, daughter of Jacques Fonteyn,<> a silver cup of the value of œ8, for her being called after the name of my wife, Geertie Webbers, deceased. I leave to my granddaughter, Geertie Minthorn, daughter of Philip Minthorn, a silver cup of the value of œ8, for her being called after the name of my wife Geertie, deceased. I do ratify and confirm the devise and bequest which I have willed and declared<> to the said Jacques Fonteyn, and his wife Anneken,<> and to Philip Minthorn, and Hillegard his wife, each an equal part of my land at Poughkeepsie, in Duchess County, containing and bounded as by the several writings may appear, and made March 7, 1712. I leave to Philip Minthorne and his wife Hillegarde, all that my dwelling house and lot, orchard, and pasture, with all that certain parcel of land at the Bowery, on the south side of Captain Blagge, joining the Kings farm commonly called the Negroes farm, about 32 acres, with all appurtenances. All the rest to my children equally.

Witnesses, John Conrad Codwise, Peter De Reimer, Isaac De Reimer. Proved, February 5, 1717. At that time John Conrad Codwise was dead.

[NOTE.--Wolfert Webber's name is connected with two important tracts of land in New York. A large tract of low land extending from the Bowery nearly to Cherry Street was known as Wolfert Webber's Meadows. There was a clear spring of water between Mott and Mulberry streets, and from this a brook or rivulet wound its devious way through the meadows, and emptied into the East River at what is now James Slip. This stream separated the Montgomerie Ward, on the south from the Out Ward on the north, and the Out Ward embraced all the rest of Manhattan Island. The farm left to his son-in-law, Philip Minthorn, was well known in later days as the "Minthorn Farm." It was on the east side of the Bowery and extended from First Street to Fifth Street. Its eastern boundary was Orchard Street. The alley known as Extra Place is in the south side of the farm. Mangle Minthorne, a representative of this family, had a daughter, Hannah, who married Governor Daniel D. Tompkins.--W. S. P.]

General Notes for Child Carel (Charles) Fonteyn

NOTES For Carel Fonteyn

One source for this family is through correspondence with Margaret (Mrs. Gene L.) Flint, RR #1, Box #180, Elwood, IL 60421, as of January 23, 1983. She and I corresponded regarding the Smock family and she quotes Bible records including

"In the bible was a piece of paper with the following information: ...... Annaka Married to Jacques Fountain/Hellegon M.[Webbers] to Philip Minthorn..Jacques Fountain had three children, Charles.., Caty.., & Charity [which lived to adulthood]...Charles married Sarah Nolan & had children, Jacques, Mary, Hannah, John, Charles, Sally. Sally Fountain married John Smock,.... Bible was donated by, Lucile Coffey, a descendant of Abraham Smock, to a Museum in Ind."

The second source for this family is through "Notes on the Smock Family," by Richard Smock circa 1899. He has substantially the same information.

This family was based solely on the information above until 19 Feb 1994 when Diane Witt sent me a copy of an original document in her possession. This document was a bond between Charles Fonteyn and the surviving grandchildren of Jacques Fonteyn. The provisions of Jacques' will had caused bickering and they had decided to submit to an arbiter.

The one certain error was that I had Mary Fonteyn as a wife of an unknown Williams. This bond clearly states that she was the widow of Michael Van Dervoort. Since the date of the Williams marriage would have predated this document, obviously it was wrong. The Williams marriage was assumed from Conewago Twp DRC records - and the Mary indicated there is now unknown.

5. JOHANNES3 FONTYN, (Johannes2, Carel1), was probably born ca. 1700 and married Sarah, most likely dau. of Isaac Hendricks and Rachel (___) Van Amburgh. He was referred to as “young Hannes Fontyn” in 1729 at the baptism of the child of Angientje Fontyn, his presumed sister. He was probably the Johannes Fontyn taxed in Newburgh or Highland, Ulster Co., NY from 1726-29 and in Rombout from 1734-35. Isaac Hendricks (Van Amburgh) was taxed in South Precinct and Rombout from 1718 through 1740 when he was on the list of Freeholders in DC. He was one away from Cornelis Bogardus on the list.670 There are no records for Johannes Fontyn after the 1735 tax list.
Children:

9. i. ?Isaac, b. 23 Dec. 1722; m. Mollie Bogardus.
ii. Jan, bp. 23 June 1728 at Peter Lossings in DC. The child was two
months old and Sp. were Isaac (Hendrickse Van) Amburgh and
wife Rachel.671
iii. ?Mary; m. William, b. ca. 1728, son of Damen3 and Helena
(Tietsoort) Palmatier with bans of 1 April 1748 at Poughkeepsie.
[PRCh]. They had son Johannes bp. 2 Dec. 1763 at Hopewell
with Sp. Damon Palmatier and Elizabeth Bartlett. [HRCh]. The
son may have married Sally LeRoy.672

672 See LeRoy Family of Dutchess Co., NY, Warren Horner, ca. 1981, Book #254 at
Fonda, NY. This work opines that Mary’s father may have been a Henry Fontyn
but we have not found any of that name locally.

General Notes (Husband)

I need to emphasize how much this family is speculation. Nothing is proven. Everything is based on a few conclusions drawn from baptismal records.

General Notes (Wife)

Name note: I need to emphasize the tentative connection to the Van Amburgh family. This connection is completely unproven and based on one christening record. Instead of parents, the witnesses could have been friends, or any possible relationship.

It is remotely possible that this Sarah is the Sarah VanHyning who is found in the Fishkill RDC records. Insofar as I know, she's not, but then I don't ever know if this is the right person in the first place.

General Notes for Child Isaac Fonteyn

Chronological List of the Life of Isaac Fonteyn md to Mollie Bogardus.

• Research Note, From Doherty's Beekman Patents Vol F

The number of Johns involved in these two generations continually causes confusion. Frank Doherty creates this possible scenario for a third wife. Still, none of this is proven. There are always those blasted Connecticut Fontines running around and the Anthony Fountain family of Staten Island. The possible misspelling of Van Tien and Valentines as Vantine could be an explanation.

So far, it's educated guesswork.

Child: (by third wife Maria Lem) x. Johannes, b. 5 June, bp. 7 June 1730 at Quassic-Kill (Newburgh, Orange Co., NY) with Sp. Abraham Fontyn and Annatje Lem. The church record notes: "Johannes, son of Hannes Fontyn, who was then deceased, and widow Maria."665 He may be the man who married Maria LaFevre and went to NYC where she was recorded as a member of the New York Reformed Dutch Church in NYC 25 Aug. 1766. Johannes Vantine was recorded as a member 23 Nov. 1769.666 A John Van Tine reported in 1768 that his wife Mary had run away.667 Maria LaFevre died before 1785 when Johannes Fountain, widower of Maria LeFevre, residing in Nistigione, married Maria McMicken, widow of Ebenezer McMicken, living in Schenectady. They married at SchenRCh. 20 Feb. 1785. Ebenezer Mc Mikle (sic) was listed on the 1779 tax roll for Schenectady, Albany Co., NY with no real property and personal property worth £20. He paid a tax of £2/8/4. John Vantine was not on the list and was not in the NYS 1790 census under any of the usual spellings.

More information on Cornelis Vonck and Magdalena Hendrics daughter Ida. This Ida Vonck was the daughter mention in what I had sent in prior. She was listed as 4 years old in 1681. Also at the bottom I included a baptism for their daughter Magdalena.

Somerset County Historical Quarterly Vol V, pages 286: CHILDREN OF REYNIER ARENTSEN AND JANNETIE AUKES VAN NUYSE: 5. AUKE REYNIERSEN; m. Ida Vonk (dau. of Cornelius Vonk and Madeleine Hendricks), who was b. Apr. 17, 1677, and bapt. at Flatbush. He took the oath of allegiance at Flatbush in 1687, as a native; bought land in Bushwick in 1692 of Johannes Fonteyn, and also, Oct. 20, 1700, his father's farm, with its appendages and salt meadows, located at "Keuters-hoek," in Flatbush, for Ε"425; name on assessment rolls of Bushwick of 1693 and census of 1698. He was generally known as Auke Reyniersen, but sometimes the surname "Van Hengel" or "Van Engele" is recorded. Some of his children used "Reyniersen" and others "Van Hengel" or variants thereof as surnames. (For ch., see infra).

Baptism recorded dated 23 October 1698 for Magdalena. Page 454, Flatbush Church Records, by David Voorhees: Witnesses were Achias Van dyck and Magdalena Van Dyck (Ida's mother and step father).

NYGBS Record July 1966, p. 169, Lutheran Church Baptisms, NYC.

Apr 1730 Angigenetjen Fonteyn, widow of Wiljam Prikket, and William Lem, both of Ulster Co, were married. DRC of Kingston.

24 Dec 1731 Maria, baptized in the Fishkill DRC, child of William Cots and Maria Fonteyn. Wit: Isaac Fonteyn and Henne Dolff. Is this the same Maria Fonteyn married to Rutscher Landsberg? I find no record of Rutscher Landsberg and her after baptism of Marie in 1726.

1 Jul 1741 Dorothea, baptized in the Fishkill DRC, as the child of Isaac Fonteyn and Angeniet Fonteyn, which is a mistake in the register. I assume Willem Lem to be dead. Wit: Dorothea Lent (and should also include Isaac Fonteyn).
