Robert F. Van Tine was a soldier of the American revolution, who served his country for three years, and was discharged a cripple for life. He was a member of an old Dutch family of New York and lived in Steuben, that state, where he married Mary B. Chapin.

Their son William H. Van Tine was born in 1820, and some time between 1838 and 1840 came to Cleveland. He married Julia Maria Herrick, daughter of Maria and the late Sylvester P. Herrick of Vernon, N. Y. The young couple at once joined the Presbyterian church, and thenceforth for half a century were Sabbath School workers. Their home was on Brownell street.

General Notes for Child William Stevens

>Name note: Darien VR has two entries for a William Stevens, duplicates I think!

Notes on William Stevens and Hannah Scofield: The death certificate of John Henry STEVENS gives William, born Darien, Conneticut, as his father and Hannah, name mistakenly in birthplace, as his mother. Darien VR has it correctly. The death certificate of James E. Stevens gives William Stevens and Hannah Scofield as parents, both born USA. Judith Plummer reports in her letter of 5 August 1987 (Document "B") that she is unable to find a death certificate for William Stevens in Darien records. She did locate the death of Hannah STEVENS, widow, age 75, on page 472, Vol 4, 1869-1909, Darien Vital Records. She died 28 May 1871, female, born Stamford, white, residence at death-Darien. Her parents names were not given. She died of "Complicated Disease." Judith Plummer was wrong. There were two death records in the Darien VR for Wm Stevens'. One died 14 Feb 1855, was a laborer, b. Darien. No age or occupation was given. The second entry was for Wm Stephens, age 68, occupation "nothing", b. Darien, d. Feb 1854 of intemperance. I think these are the same person and a mistake was made in the books. The entry isn't very flattering.

She also copied Deed Records of Darien, letter 23 May 1987 (Document "A"), which seem to indicate a relationship between Hannah STEVENS and the HOLLY and SCOFIELD families.
