To my surprise and pleasure, I found my great-grandfather, Gabriel Francis Maddox, on your website at rootsweb, but I was sorry the data didn't go further into his ancestry than his parents. I wasn't able to discern the connection to the Vantines. Anyhow, I descend from his daughter, Mary Lucinda Maddox (b.18 Mar 1875 d. 6 Feb 1915), who married Robert Samples Pearce on 1 Jan 1896 in Foreman, Arkansas (then known as "Rocky Comfort").

I would be happy to share my records of the descendants of Mary Maddox and Robert Pearce if you are interested. Please tell me in what format I should submit the data, should you want it. I have it in Family Tree Maker.

Carol:
The attachment details the family of Mary Lucinda Maddox, daughter of Gabriel Francis Maddox and Mary Elizabeth Humphrey. It's in rich text format. I hope it goes through all right.

I have a photograph of Mary Lucinda Maddox (she was called "Lou") with her husband, Robert Samples Pearce, and five of their children, made in about 1909. Also one of her alone, which is a blow-up of her face from the family picture. If you would like, I will scan them and send to you. Their son, Gabriel Lloyd Pearce, was my father. Family lore claimed that Mary Lucinda Maddox was part Cherokee, I believe from her mother, Mary Humphrey.

A note regarding the LDS records provided by Todd Douglas on Sallie Gertrude Maddox McElhannon's family: Nearly all of her children had nicknames which they were known by, as Todd noted in the files. However, he didn't include two: Edith's nickname was "Tom," and Sally May's was "Teck." I spent some time with Edith (Todd's grandmother) and knew her pretty well. She had a flair for writing poetry. She gave me a copy of one which I liked very much called "The Old Homestead," in which she revisits the old house where she grew up, mentioning herself and all of the brothers and sisters (except the first three, who died young) by their nicknames "Nike," "Bo," "Tom," "Jack," "Tude," and "Teck."

For your possible interest, I dug up some dates from the Social Security Death Index to fill in some blanks in the LDS records:

Sarah E. Whitmore Hayden (William Edgar McElhannon's wife) was born Dec. 26, 1901 and died Dec. 1985 in Bowie, Texas.

Cecil Eugene Douglas (Edith's husband) was born Oct. 31, 1900 and died Feb. 1986 in California.

Avie Helen Wright (Gabriel Francis' wife) was born Feb 3, 1909 and died Sep
1983 in Ashdown, Arkansas.

Rubye Ross (Napoleon P.'s wife) was b. July 29, 1911 and died Jan. 1994, Foreman, Arkansas.

Sally May McElhannon Madden was born Nov. 9, 1912 and died June 26, 1999, Odessa, Texas.

And lastly, one item in the LDS records on Mary E. Humphrey caught my attention: it indicates that she had a second marriage ("Marriage 2 Husband Moren"). I don't understand this, in that she died before Gabriel Francis Maddox did (she in 1891 and he in 1925). Unless they were divorced, which wasn't likely in those days. Her youngest child was only 5 when she died.

Let me know if the attachment goes through o.k.

Obviously, the ennumerator made a mistake on the relationships when he went to the next page, but I think he also made a mistake when he carried the name Moren down because certainly Sallie was born before 1880.

Hi Carol:

It has been a while since we last communicated and I really do not know where we left off. At any rate, I did find information on Willis Humphreys and Mary Johnson. I am making the assumption that Mary and Willis knew each other before the outbreak of the Civil War. Both families were in Georgia before the war. Willis either enlisted or was drafted into Company C, 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry CSA in April 1861. He was captured twice. The last and final time in Georgia near the end of the war when he was with a detachment that was trying to get Jefferson Davis to Mexico. There is quite a history of the 3rd TN on the Internet.

Willis and Mary Johnson were married in Union County GA on Oct. 16, 1866. They wanted a big copy fee of 25 cents. I sent them a dollar coin and a self addressed stamped envelope for the copy. A copy is attached. A Mary Humphreys(ies) got married the week before. I wonder if it was Willis' sister. I cannot quite make out the grooms name. It looks like Th-- Wist or Mist.

Attached are the pedigree charts for Mary Rose (Bethell) Di Domizio.

Best regards,

Bob

Hi Carol:

Pat Manes Luster gave me your e-mail address. My name is Bob Di Domizio, Lansdale, PA. My wife, Mary Rose (Bethell) Di Domizio, is a descendant of Willis Humphreys. Her connection to Willis is through her mom, Bessie Mae (Rhynes) Bethell. The line is: Mary Rose to Bessie, to Rosanna (Humphreys) Rhynes, to Willis Humphreys and Mary Johnson.

The only information we have on Willis is the information Pat got for us through various census records and Willis' Civil War record. Willis was killed in a hunting accident in Washington County AR in 1886. Another hunter supposedly mistook him for a deer. His wife, Mary (Johnson), followed through with his application for a Homestead Land Grant in Washington County in 1886/1887. She moved to Newton County AR sometime prior to 1900. She is on the census rolls for Newton County in 1900 with 2 sons, John and Thomas. She died sometime before 1910 and is supposedly buried in the Cowell Cemetery, Newton County AR. We have no
information on John or Thomas.

Let us know if there is a connection with this line of Humphreys.
