!NOTE: HISTORY OF CLAY CO. INDIANA on page 302-3 by William Travis of Middlebury, Vol. 1 and 2, reprinted by Clay Co. Historical Society and published by Genealogical Publishing Co. of Chicago in 1909. Ezekiel Jenkins was born in Virginia, January 24, 1795, a son of William and Henrietta Lewis Jenkins. In an early period in his life he went to Kentucky and lived there for several years, coming then to Owen County, Indiana, where he owned a farm. From Owen County in 1834 he came to Clay County and bought eighty acres of timber land in section 15, Sugar Ridge Twp., which he cleared and improved, but after living there for seven years he sold the farm and entered one hundred and twenty acres from the government in section 10 of the same twp. This land was also covered with timber, but he in time cut away the trees and placed it under an excellent state of cultivation, spending the remainder of his life there and dying ond the 22nd day of Sept 1869. He had married in Kentucky Henrietta Woodsmall, who was born in that state February 28, 1792, a daughter of John and ? Preston Woodsmall, also of that state. Mrs. Jenkins died on the 22nd of Sept, 1868, just one year to the day before her husband.
!OCCUPATION: Farmer.
!NOTE: Blanchard, Charles. COUNTIES OF CLAY and OWEN INDIANA and published by Battey and Co. in 1884. Ezekiel Jenkins is a Virginian and Henrietta his wife a Kentuckian of Irish descent. They came to Indiana in 1823, settling at Rattlesnake Creek, in Owen Co., where they lived eleven years. Then they moved to Sugar Ridge Twp., Clay Co., where Ezekiel cleared up wild land and made a home. After a time he sold this and bought 120 acres, covered with fallen timber, half a mile from Center Point, where he lived until his death, which occurred 22 SEPT 1869 (page 480). Sugar Ridge Twp., Ezekiel Jenkins was an early settler. He settled in the eastern part of the twp. on land he afterward sold to George Grimes. Later he moved near the center part, where he now lives (page 261). An orchard on Ezekiel Jenkins' farm was set out in an early day, and several trees of which bear fruit at this present time (page 262). 4,970

Civil War Pension Pension Application of John H. Reeder, Federal Archives, #318,395.
On 10 January 1881, John Reeder appeared before Notary Public Oscar I. Dunagan and made his statement regarding his service in the Civil War. He was fifty years old, a resident of Centre Point, Clay County, Indiana. He lived in Brazil for five years before his enlistment on 5 May 1864 as a corporal of Co. 'K' 133rd Regt. Indiana Infantry Volunteers. At that time John Reeder followed the trade of wagon maker. Just one year before enlisting he moved to Centre Point and worked as a carpenter for a while and as a cabinet maker for the rest of the time. Since his discharge he continued to follow the trade of cabinet maker, kept the United States Post Office, and 'notions, groceries and provisions' and is still doing so. He served in July of 1864 in Bridgeport, Alabama where he first became disabled with rheumatism in the knees and ankle joints. The examining surgeon's certificate dated 9 June 1882 described John H. Reeder in detail. He was 5'9' tall, weighed 140 pounds, had a light complexion, was 53 years old, had a pulse of 98, and respiration of 19. 'Find the left leg atrophied and adduction of left foot. Left thigh smaller than the right, an inch and half in circumference. The phalanges are flexed and articulation tender. The condyles [?] are sore at each knee, and claimant walks lame and unsteady. Disability 3/4, 3rd grade.'
Absalom B. Wheeler and William Kress swore to his condition as they too served as first lieutenants at Bridgeport, Alabama. 'From exposure while in duty on said day and night being in the rain all day and forced to sleep on ground at night - the next morning applicants lower limbs were much swollen and especially his knees which rendered him unfit for duty for a time and since said exposure has contracted as a result rheumatism which has continuously affected him - so that at times he is unable to do anything.'
Lieutenant Wheeler further swore to the following: 'That he was never treated in any hospital by a Surgeon for the reason his Lieutenant A. B. Wheeler of Co. 'K' 133d Regt. Ind. Inftry Vols. would not permit him to be removed from command to the hospital, he believing the Surgeon incompetent and the accommodations inadequate.'
Doctor F. B. McCullough stated in Sarah Jenkins Reeder's application for widow's pension that 'I was called to treat John H. Reeder Mar. 8th, 1883. I found him suffering from subacute Rheumatism complicated with heart disease which is a common thing with this disease and also with symptoms of Pneumonia which soon developed into a severe form which terminated in Death in ten days. He was not entirely free from Rheumatism at any time for years prior to the setting in of Pneumonia. The combination of these diseases produced death the first and leading disease was Rheumatism and had it not been from the Effect of this I do not think the Pneumonia would have caused death.'• Cause of Death, 17 Mar 1883 - , , Clay, Indiana
Pneumonia, heart disease, injuries from war
