Carol,

I have enjoyed the information contained in your web site and thought that I
should introduce myself. My name is John Nunnery (age 53), and I started
looking into the family tree about two years ago. My line is through the
Clarence New York Vantine's to my mother Helen Elizabeth Vantine, who died
in 1973. My specific line is as follows:

Me => Helen Elizabeth Vantine => John Steiner Vantine => Charles Edward
Vantine => Charles Girard Vantine => John Vantine =>
Matheus Vantine => Charles Fonteyn (York County PA; Cayuga County NY)

I am currently working on this line and the associated lines down five
generations from Charles Fonteyn. In this effort, I have found some
additional information about the family, some corrections, etc. etc. etc.
which I will forward when I complete my initial effort. In total your web
site is excellent, and has been the basis for most of my work.

I thought that I would pass along some information that I came across
yesterday, as I thought it was significant, concerning Claude Halstead Van
Tyne. He is not in my direct line.

He was a rather famous historian, who had several articles published in the
New York Times over the years. Even his wife Isabel had some letters to the
editor published in the Times. There are three items which I thought would
be of interest. The first is that his obituary was published in the Times on
March 22, 1930 indicating that he had died in Michigan on March 21, 1930. I
can get send you a *.pdf copy of this article if you would like. The second
item of interest is that he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for History in
1930, shortly after his death. The third item of interest is that his works
were banned by Mayor William Hale Thompson of Chicago because the Mayor
thought them to be anti-American.

His published works include (from his obituary):

Loyalists in the American Revolution
History of the American Revolution
Letters of Daniel Webster
Guide to the Government Archives in Washington
A School History of the United States
Causes of the War of Independence
Unsolved Problems of the American Revolution

Keep up the good work. I look forward to the updates you provide. If I can
be assistance please let me know.

• 1900 Census, Unable to find him on 1900 census., 1900

After I found the Death Notice giving his address as 90 Ryerson Street, I read the 1900 Census for Ward 7. It took some reading (and ironically if I'd started with the first film, it would have taken only about two hours instead of two days) and I eventually found 90 Ryerson. Only he wasn't there. I thought I would cry.
