Hi, pleased to meet you. I am a descendant of Mary Knower, Ann's sister. We've always thought your ancestor's married name was Van Line, so I guess we have to correct that now. My mother has a ms description of the Knower line written by Ann, and I've just had the fun of discovering her brother Benjamin's house in Guilderland, N.Y. It's simply beautiful. I took pictures, if you'd be interested And wrote a wee bit about it for next Sunday's newspaper ...

Peak experience

Once upon a time, so long ago that my daughter Cora was still known as Cornelia, we took a family trip to the Adirondack Mountains of New York. We were visiting relatives, of course ‹ why else does anyone travel? I remember sitting on the front porch of Uncle Ken¹s house, with little Cornelia on my lap, pointing to a distant, misty mountain suspended on the horizon. It was Mount Marcy, the highest peak in the range, I believe. ³Cornelia,² I whispered to her. ³That mountain has something to do with you, and I can¹t for the life of me remember what.² It came back to me later, browsing through a family history my mother had compiled. Mount Marcy is named for William L. Marcy, who was governor of New York from 1833 to 1839. My Cornelia was named for my mother¹s aunt, Cornelia Randall Holland, who was known as Nini. Nini, in turn, was named for her aunt, Cornelia Marcy Randall. ³The single most-photographed ugly woman in the history of the world,² my mother sputtered while sorting out boxes of old photographs in her aunt¹s estate. Cornelia Marcy Randall was named for Gov. Marcy¹s wife ‹ whose name, oddly enough ‹ was Cornelia. I knew there was a connection of some kind. Mrs. Marcy was Cornelia Marcy Randall¹s godmother, and had presented her with a silver cup in 1847. Somewhere, we have a hastily written letter in which Gov. Marcy thanks my mother¹s great-great grandfather for giving shelter to Mrs. Marcy in some time of distress. We have no clue as to what Mrs. Marcy¹s distress entailed, or why she should have fetched up on the Randall doorstep in Manhattan in 1841. Well, the plot has thickened. Just last week my gentleman friend and I were pursuing our mutual hobby ‹ genealogy ‹ down the back roads of suburban Albany, N.Y. A booklet caught my eye in the Guilderland Town Hall. ³Says here, there¹s a Benjamin Knower House in town. That¹s a name that belongs to my mother¹s family.² Actually, at least three Benjamin Knowers hang on my mother¹s family tree. Aunt Nini pronounced the name ³Noah.² Now I wish I¹d listened to her stories more carefully. One of the Benjamins was in the Revolutionary War, and possibly the War of 1812. According to the booklet, this Benjamin Knower was a maker of waterproof hats who did quite well for himself, eventually becoming a bank president and state treasurer. Obviously no relation of mine, I thought to myself as we headed down the Altamount Road in search of the place. And there it was, a very handsome house with a historical marker out front:

KNOWER HOUSE Est. as Hat Factory about 1800 by Benjamin Knower Gov. William L. Marcy Married Cornelia Knower in this House

Well. I had no idea. Cornelia Marcy was a cousin all along. Her aunt Mary ‹ Benjamin¹s sister ‹ married a gentleman named Randall, and became the mother of Cornelia Marcy Randall, who became the aunt of Cornelia Holland, who was the proud great-great aunt of Cornelia Van Hazinga, and lived long enough to know my Cora as a toddler. The silver Cornelia cup is engraved, ³CKR to CMR² and ³CMR to CRH.² When my Cora was christened, Nini had asked me to have it engraved again, ³CRH to CVH,² but no jeweler I took the cup to would undertake the job. Engraving is done my machines now, they all said, and the cup is too delicate to risk machine engraving. I think I¹ll have to try again, perhaps someone in Boston still does that kind of work by hand. It¹s just too much history to let slip through our fingers.

[Of course the Ann Knower Vanline is Ann Vantine.]

(Editor's note: The following account of the exploits of Benjamin Knower was written by Ann Knower Vanline for Emily Weld Randall Gregory in the 1890s, while Miss Vanline visited Virginia Beach, Va. Miss Vanline was a granddaughter of Revolutionary War patriot Benjamin Knower through her mother, Ann Knower Vanline; Mrs. Gregory was also a granddaughter through her father John Randall and Benjamin's daughter, Mary Knower Randall. It should be noted that as Benjamin Knower died in 1806, he did not in fact rise to meet the challenge of 1812. The privateering exploits described actually did occur during the Revolutionary War. Our scribe also omits to mention Benjamin's late second marriage and the birth of a daughter a few days before his death.)
Extract from "Record of Randall Descent" by Ann Knower Vanline
... Benjamin Knower was an ardent patriot and outspoken rebel against the British government and the king of Great Britain. He gave up his business, left his home and enlisted in the cause of liberty, and to help free his country from the yoke of England. He was one of the Boston Tea Party who threw the tea overboard in Boston Harbor. He was also in the battles of Bunker Hill and Lexington. The road the British had to travel when they went out to Charlestown to destroy the American stores was through a heavy piece of timber. Mr. Knower was one of the party who went out from Boston ahead of the British and stood behind the trees ready to fire at them as they marched along. They would jump from behind the trees, fire, and retire again. By the time the smoke would clear, there would be no one in sight. After the British had marched along and were out of sight, the Americans came out to see what harm they had done, and as Mr. Knower, my grandfather expressed it, the road was pretty well strewn with red-coats. Some were dead, some dying, others wounded. As they were looking around, they saw an officer lying in the corner of a rail fence. He was dying. They asked if they could do anything for him. He begged them to take him to some house to die. There was a big cabin in the field nearby so they took some rails of the fence and made a litter and carried it to the house and laid him in a bed. He then took a small sack containing gold from his pocket and handed it to them. They refused to take it -- told him they were not fighting for money, but for freedom. He then requested them to take his money, his gold watch & ring to Lord Hume in Boston & ask him to send them to his mother in England, which they did. The brother of General Warren who was killed at Bunker Hill was one of the party who attacked the British. Mr. Knower remained in the army until peace was proclaimed & his country was free. When the War of 1812 was declared his patriotism & hatred of the British was as intense as ever & he was ready to fight, so he rigged out a vessel to go privateering. He joined the company and went out with them. The government issued them letters of marque. They did not return until the close of the war. They were quite successful, having taken several British vessels & made money enough to satisfy them with the result of their enterprise -- when he returned from his voyage his health was much impaired. So he never engaged in business again tho' he lived several years after. He went out to take a walk, when he returned he was going up the steps and dropped dead. This was the end of a patriot who loved freedom, his country and the government he helped to establish & instilled the same principles into his children.

• Research Note, Personal Letter from James V. Mink to Allan Mink

27 June 1969, 5 typewritten pages

A. Has two large oil portraits of James Vantine and his wife. These are thought to have been painted by an American portrait artist of some note, Charles Smith Jewett, who had studios in the New York City during the 1830's & 40's and later moved to San Francisco.

B. ...James Vantine is the brother of Sarah Jane (Vantine) Mink, probably born somewhere in the Rhinebeck-Fishkill area of Dutchess County on the Hudson River around a hundred miles north of New York City in either 1809 or 1810. James Vantine's obituary, which appeared in the San Francisco Call of Jan. 15, 1867 states: on p. 3, col. 2, "Died. Vantine-- In this city, January 14, Captain James Vantine of the firm of James Vantine & Co., a pioneer merchant of San Francisco, a native of New York, aged 57 years. He was well known throughout the State. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend the funeral TOMORROW (Wednesday) MORNING at 11 o'clock, from the Howard Street M.E. Church, between second and third."

C. He was interred in Laurel Hill Cemetery (S. F.), and when that cemetery was disbanded because of a city ruling, his remains were removed to Cypress Lawn Cemetery at Colma, San Mateo Co., Calif. and interred, together with the remains of all others from the Laurel Hill Cemetery, who were unclaimed by their heirs, in a common underground vault.

D. Lots of stuff about the ships, Rolla and Troubador. James walked across the Isthmus of Panama and caught the Troubador which arrived from Matzatlan, May 4, 1849.

E. He was in business in New York and in California. Associated with Ashley A. Vantine, but Mink assumes they were brothers, when distant cousins is all. "The building of Jewett, Scott & Vantine appears to have been used by the Vigilance Committee of 1856 and may be where he got the title of captain."

F. "My father and aunts seem to recall that it was grandfather (James V.) Mink's opinion that James Vantine left his wife in New York and set out for California without the least intention of ever returning. Then in San Francisco, he took up with another woman, who he took as his commonlaw wife."

G. "Now James Vantine's will appears (is disclosed) in the San Franciso Call, Jan 30, 1867, p. 3, col 1. "Will of James Vantine.--The will of James Vantine was filed with the Clerk of the Probate Court yesterday. The testator makes bequests as follows: To Mary Ann Green, daughter of Sarah Green, $5,000; to Sarah Green, the sum of $2,000; to Catherine Boyd, $3,000; to his sister Eliza Lash $250; to his sister, Jane Mink, all the remainder of his property, of every description, for her support and use during the term of her natural life, and at her death to be equally divided amongst her children. Charles C. Carroll and A. H. Titcomb are appointed executors, and all former wills are revoked. The will bears date April 26, 1866."

1. Newspaper record of James' sailing, and find it not in the Tribune but in the New York Herald for January 17, 1849, where he is listed as a passenger on the Rolla.
2. There is, however, an entry announcing the death of a James Vantine of Fishkill, N. Y., on September 30, 1838.

Carol, it is the Dale Cemetery in Ossining (Their are two cemeteries)
it is the Van Tine/Folger plot Section A Lot 7
it contains- George Folger -1864
Eliza Jane van Tine - 1865
Lincoln Clark - 1866
Lizzie White Folger- 1881
Lewis M Clark 1868
Eliza Jane Folger 1889
Enoch H. Wells 1899
Henry Clay Folger 1914 (Married Eliza Jane Folger)
Mary Folger Wells 1947

Most are my relatives, Eliza Jane Folger (Clark) married Henry Clay Folger. Their son Henry Clay Folger founded the Folger Shakespeare Library in washington D.C. I do not know who Eliza Jane Van Tine Is but it seems that Eliza Jane Folger (Clark) was named after her. It is mentioned that their is a long dutch line in the family, that is why I needed to find out who Van Tine was and from where. They said she was born in Bergen Point, N.J. Any help would be great- Robert

Is this the Dale Cemetery in Ossining or another cemetery? I have another family of Vantines in the Dale Cemetery. You need to give me the information you have on the people buried in that plot because there are too many fragments still.

Thanks Carol for all the research on James and Eliza Jane.

Eliza Jane Knowlton, his wife, was the daughter of Abijah
Knowlton and Abigail Ann Russell. Abijah grew up in Bedford
Westchester Co., NY, and went to NYC to engage in business.
We assume all his children were born there.

Eliza J. was his fifth child. I knew she married James
Vantine [most of this is from Charles Stocking's HISTORY
OF THE KNOWLTONS . . . (1897)] but little else. I suspect
the birthday you have is correct but not the year as her
younger sister Abigail was born in April of 1815.

She is living with her brother Stephen Knowlton in 1850 in
Brooklyn, as you note. Since she died in Bergen Co., NJ, I
imagine she was living with her sister Abigail Lane's
family at time of death. I need to look for her in 1860.

Thank you for all the dates and the city directory entries.
Eliza's older brother Isaac H. Knowlton was also a cartman
and a grocer. NEW YORK CARTMEN by Hodges has many details
about cartmen plus sources to check as they had to get
licenses to work. I just noticed on the web that Isaac and
James left on the same ship, the Rollo, from Boston, Jan 17,
1849, for San Francisco. Isaac had recently lost his wife.
Isaac returned home to New Jersey; but his son George W.
Knowlton made a permanent home in California, and many of
his descendants are still there.

I have entered many of these people onto Rootsweb's
WORLDCONNECT and will continue to update in the future.
Thanks again for all the information about the Vantines.
