Dear Carol,

I have been researching my husband's ancestory and came across your site. It has a great deal of information, my hat's off to you for all of the hard work!!

I am writing because of some "discrepancies" that we have in our records. I know that I must have information that you are not privy to, and perhaps my "source" is not 100% complete, either. This has been a very difficult battle researching my husband's family, as he is now an orphaned only child, who vaguely remembers his grandparents, thank goodness his mother kept a few obituaries over the years, which at least gave me a place to start.

Now, on to the line we are discussing:

1 - Carel Fonteyn
2 - Jacques Fonteyn
3 - Carel Fonteyn
4 - Jacques Funtein
5 - Thomas VanTine
6 - Hezekiah VanTine
7 - David M VanTine
8 - James Finley VanTine
9 - Herbert VanTine

First, you show John Herbert's dob as October 1883. What I have found on the Social Security Death Index for a John VanTine who died December 1967 (my husband believes this could be his great grandfather, as he would have been 9 at the time), the dob is 12/19/1884. Might I ask where you found his dob??

Second, John Herbert's children, there are several missing. I think the easiest way for me to explain, is to simply transcribe her obituary from The Valley Daily News from Tarentum, PA on May 25, 1955:

Mrs. Florence VanTine Betler, 48, wife of Robert C Betler, Sr. of 1141 Strawn Ave, New Kensington, died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon at 2:15 in Citizens General Hospital.

Mrs. Betler, lifelong area resident, suffered a stroke eight days ago and entered the hospital Monday. She had been in ill health, however, for six years.

Born June 19, 1906 in Allegheny Twp, Armstrong County, she was a daughter of Herbert VanTine now of New Kensington, and the late Sarah VanTine.

She was a member of New Kensington Women of the Moose Chapter 711 and the Greater Beneficial Union.

Surviving, besides her husband and her father, are a son, Robert C Jr, Cleveland; two daughters, Mrs. Byron (Iris) Hawk, New Kensington, and Miss Phyllis Betler, at home; five brothers, John VanTine, Merwin; James, Clarence, Paul, and Ralph VanTine, New Kensington; a sister, Mrs. William (Alverna) Vorp, Arnold, and three grandchildren. Her mother, Mrs. Sarah VanTine, died in June 1953.

Friends may call at the Ross G Walker Funeral Home, 868 4th Ave, New Kensington where services will be held Friday afternoon at 2. The Rev. George E Lynch, pastor of New Kensington Free Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be made in Greenwood Memorial Park, New Kensington.

I do not know the dob for Alverna, but I do have more dates for you.

These are "guesses" based off of census records: John 1909, James 1911, Clarence 1912, Paul 1914, Ralph 1918. Florence married Robert C Betler (8/5/1902 - 5/1973) in the 1920s and had 4 children: Robert Jr 7/13/1924 - 4/20/1989, Russell 1925, Phyllis abt 1933, and Iris 2/7/1931 - 4/30/1997. Iris and Byron F Hawk (12/26/1922 - 3/9/1965) had one child, Richard Byron 1/30/1958.

I thank you for taking your time to read my "novel" and I look forward to hearing from you. Wishing you and all VanTine cousins a very Merry Christmas!!

Sincerely,
Paula Hawk
