Jack Duane Vantine, 90, Bismarck, North Dakota, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at his home. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 25, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, ND, with the Rev. Dr. Jacob L. Kincaid officiating. A private interment will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Jack was born February 15, 1917, to John Cissell and Cora Mace (Grimes) Vantine in Los Angeles, California. After a few months, the family r-turned to farming near Grandin, ND. Four years later, Jack's father purchased and operated a general store in Grandin and continued there until 1940.

Jack graduated from Grandin High School in 1935, when he and his elder brother Glenn opened the Vantine Paint and Glass Company in Bismarck, followed by stores in Mandan, Dickinson and Williston. Glenn was General Manager and supervised the extensive contract department. Jack was Sales and Advertising Manager, preparing promotional material for newspaper, radio, and TV advertising. He was one of the first in North Dakota to personally broadcast the store's radio and TV ads, and had a 15-minute radio show called Decorators Doorway.

On July 12, 1938, Jack married Thelma J. Liessman in Bismarck. They had two sons, John Liessman and Bruce Lynn. The family was always involved in the Presbyterian Church, where Jack taught church school classes, was superintendent for a time, instructed confirmation classes while the church was without a minister, and was Ruling Elder and a Lay Preacher for nearly fifty years. He and his wife Thelma served as a Youth Advisor team. He was a member of the Jamestown College Board for three years.

In October 1942 Jack enlisted in the Civilian Pilot Training program, transferred to the U. S. Army Air Corps Meteorology School at Pomona College, Claremont, CA, and served at air bases stateside until his discharge in January 1946.

Jack joined Kiwanis in 1937, served as club president in 1953, Governor of the Minnesota-Dakotas District in 1956, and was President of the Kiwanis Educational Foundation 1979 - 2000. He was a Foundation Joseph Messer Fellow, Kiwanis International George Hixon Fellow, and recipient of the Tablet of Honor. In Bismarck he was involved in United Way and Red Cross campaigns, served 18 years on the Bismarck Park Board when land was secured for the Dakota Zoo, Riverwood Golf Course, Sleepy Hollow Park, and during renovation and enlargement of the Municipal Country Club. He, Thelma, and Liess attended a Park Executives Conference in Monte Carlo in 1965, which included tours of parks on the French and Italian Rivieras.

Jack is survived by one sister, Fay, and husband Bud Linfoot, Grand Forks, ND; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Liess Vantine, Mandan, ND, and Bruce and Cindy Vantine, Florissant, MO; one granddaughter, Libby, husband Chad Martin, and two great-grandchildren Ashlyn and Bailey Martin, Allen, TX; one grandson and wife, Charlie and Marcie Vantine, of St. Louis, MO.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Thelma, his brother Glenn and Leola Vantine; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Ray Fladland, and Emerson and Elda Liessman. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, the Kiwanis Educational Foundation, or Cornerstone Chorale and Brass.

Arrangements are being made by Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, North Dakota.

• Biography 1595

PETER VANTINE. Among the representative families of Genesee County we find this venerable octogenarian, whose home is in Atlas Township. He was born November 29, 1811, in Cayuga County, N. Y., and is a son of Thomas and Catherine (Titsworth) Vantine. The father's family is of Holland extraction and has been for generations well known in the State of New York. His brother, John T. Vantine, of Oakland County is a prominent man in that part of the State.

When only a child, our subject removed with his parents to Erie County, N. Y., and received his limited schooling, when the daily walk to and from school was over a stretch of eight miles so that the boy did not have more than very limited advantages in this line. In early youth he learned the elements of farming and adopted that as his life work.

Mr. Vantine was married in Erie County N. Y., November 28, 1834, and his wife, whose maiden name was Lusinda Lockwood, became the mother of four children: Harriet, Isaac, and two who have died. Harriet is now the widow of Henry Updegraf and both reside in this township. After a short residence in Erie County, the young couple came to Genesee County and settled first in Atlas Township, this county, and afterward in Groveland Township, Oakland County, but four years later returned hither. The son Isaac who still resides with his parents, married Mahala J. Merwin, and they are the parents of seven children, namely: Reuben, James, Emma, Abigail, Will, Addis and Alice. Our subject and his wife took an infant girl to raise, by the name of Eunice P., forty-two years ago and adopted her as one of the family. She is married but still remains at home.

The faithful and devoted wife, who for more than half a century walked hand in hand with Mr. Vantine in the journey of life passed to her heavenly reward, September 3, 1890. She had with him shared the hardships and privations of pioneer life and together they had also enjoyed the comforts and satisfaction of prosperity in their declining years, and her companionship is keenly missed in this pleasant home. It is pleasant to hear Mr. Vantine relate incidents of his early life in this region when Indians, wolves and bears were his most frequent callers. He is a splendid representative of the typical Wolverine pioneer and receives what he richly deserves, the esteem and confidence of all who know him. His political affiliations have always been with the Republican party since its organization and his hand has ever been open to aid in every movement which would conduce to the welfare of his neighbors and the prosperity of the Commonwealth.
