• Research Note 60
In the Vantine family history, there is a comment that Abraham was captured by pirates and nothing more heard of him. There was an Abraham in whaleboat service from New Jersey who I believe is the person captured by pirates (although it's perfectly possible for two Abrahams to be captured by pirates, I guess).
An Abraham Fontyn Jr. was mentioned in Rivington's New York Newspaper in September 1778 as being captured by the privateer Jack O'Lantern as he was aboard a rebel whaleboat with a number of other men, amonth them Abraham Oakley, Peter Nephew, John Lancaster and Garret Vorhees. The men were taken to New York City as prisioners.• WARNING
I don't know which Isaac is the right son. There are two that lived in the same area and about the same time, but which are distinctly different.

MARYSVILLE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (CITY LIBRARY)
A number of the leading citizens assembled February 10, 1855, and formed a society called the Young Men's Literary and Scientific Association, which was subsequently incorporated under the name of the Marysville Library Association, with a capital stock of $25,000, divided into one thousand shares. They elected Edwards Woodruff, President; Dr. D.W.C. Rice, Vice-President; Dr. J.T. McLean, Corresponding Secretary; F.H. Woodward, Recording Secretary; Mark Brumagim, Treasurer; John S. Eckman, J.E. Galloway, Rev. D.A. Dryden, Warren P. Miller, William K. Hudson, William Hawley, T.B. Reardon, D.C. Benham, and A.A. Vantine, Directors. The object of the association was to collect a library and maintain a reading-room, where the members could enjoy themselves in a manner not possible elsewhere, and by pleasant social communion and the literary advantages offered by such an association, improve in mental culture.
It was afterwards decided that the advantages of the library should be extended to all the citizens, and to that end the trustees of the association, December 15, 1858, deeded the library to the city, making it conditional in the deed of transfer that the library should be kept open certain hours every day and should be free to the citizens of Marysville, that the Council should annually appropriate two hundred and fifty dollars for the purchase of books, and should pay the expenses of the library and the salary of the librarian. The city has, however, made but two or three appropriations for the purchase of books, though the library has been always kept in good condition and a librarian supplied.
The library is open every evening from seven to nine o'clock, except on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday the hours are from two until five o'clock in the afternoon. During library hours the room is open to all as a free reading-room; books may be drawn upon the depositing of five dollars as security for any loss or damage, the money to be refunded when the person depositing it ceases to draw books. The affairs are managed by a board of ten trustees. The number of volumes in the library at different periods has been: - 1855, 500; 1858, 2,000; 1870, 2,900; 1874, 3,250; 1879, 3,470. Miss Jane Jones, the present librarian, has filled that position since 1872. The library room is in the rear of the court room in City Hall.
The names of the present Directors are: - N.D. Rideout, Peter Decker, J.H. Jewett, W.T. Ellis, W.C. Crooks, Frank Hudson, G.W. Pine, P.C. Slattery, C.C. Harrington, and James Traynor. The Executive Committee are: - Peter Decker, W.C. Crooks, and Frank Hudson, the last two having been appointed by the City Council. The success of the library is due to the generous assistance extended by several of the more wealthy and cultured gentlemen of the city. They have spared neither their time nor their money in keeping up the institution from which the people at large derive so much benefit. Prominent among these is Hon. Peter Decker, who for several years has been a member of the Board of Directors, and a leading spirit in the midst.

Vantine and Company and came across your geneology web page. I was wondering if you have any more information on Ashley Valentine that is not on your web page such as personal documents or catalogs pertaining to his import store?
Thank you for your time and if you'd like to contact me, you may at remi_spriggs@msn.com
Best regards,

Here is a little known tidbit about the Vantine import business in New York City around the turn of the last century. Vantine's, it seems, was a legitimate import business, but this drug trader bought the business and used it for other purposes. Interesting!
http://www.mail-archive.com/ctrl@listserv.aol.com/msg30926.html
Building his dope racket, Rothstein enlarged his 'legitimate" interests. There was an old, well-established importing house in New York City called "Vantine's." It had long been engaged in importing from China and the Orient. Rothstein bought the business.
Customs officials had long known Vantine's, known it as a legitimate enterprise. When shipments arrived for Vantine's they were given only a cursory inspection. Beginning in 1925, that type of inspection made it possible for pounds of pure dope to be smuggled into the country. Vantine's was a perfect front.

Ashley A. Vantine
Ashley a. Vantine, the well-known importer of Oriental goods, died early yesterday morning of pneumonida at his residence, 152 West Fifty-seventh-street in the sixty-ninth year of the age. Mr. Vantine was among the first to establish the Oriental goods trade in the city and in it he was not [sic] successful.
Mr. Vantine was born Oct. 12, 1821, at Chazy, Clinton County, N. Y., and when a young man he went to California, making the trip around Cape Horn in a clipper ship. On reaching California, he established a general provision and supply business at San Francisco, and afterward opened a branch at Marysville, Cal. These enterprises were successful and he continued in California until 1869, when he came to New-York and established himself in the Oriental goods business, opening a store on Broadway, near Eighth-street. A few years later he moved to 831 Broadway and from there, in 1883, to 879 Broadway, where the firm, A. A. Vantine & Co., has done business since. Two years ago Mr. Vantine retired the business being carried on under the old firm name. In connection with his business Mr. Vantine traveled a great deal, particularly to China and Japan, crossing the Pacific sixteen times. He made six visits to Turkey and Southern Russia.
Mr. Vantine leaves a widow and two daughters. The burial will be at Woodlawn.• Cause of Death, 26 Jan 1890 - , Manhattan, New York, New York

Ashley Abraham Van Tine 1821-1890
Ashley Abraham Van Tine, one of the most notable of the up-town merchants of this city, was born Oct. 12, 1821, in Chazy, N.Y., and died at his home, No. 153 West 57th street in this city, Jan. 25, 1890. He traced his family line back to old Holland stock, and his father, David Van Tine, followed the occupation of a farmer. It was upon the farm that Ashley A. Van Tine began life. He grew up rugged in health, practical and energetic, and, with a country school education, took the first step in the way of bettering his condition by becoming captain of a canal boat, while yet under age, graduating from this latter service to engage in teaching a school in Plattsburgh. This latter experience was useful to Mr. Van Tine, and by constant study he became a well informed man.
Early in life, the subject of this memoir joined the throng of residents of the Easter States, who were pouring into California, drawn by the glowing tales of discoveries of gold. Being detained on the Isthmus of Panama, a hundred days, he followed a custom usual with him and not often followed, of making the most of every minute of time, and at once began to study the Spanish language, becoming so proficient that the Alcalde offered him great inducements to remain. But the glitter of California gold proved too tempting to the New Yorker, and he pressed onward to San Francisco. For a number of years he carried on a profitable trade in general merchandise in the cities of Marysville and San Francisco, during which period he experienced some of the hardships of life in a region in which the comforts of civilization had not yet been introduced, but steadily gained ground and made his way without serious interruption.
It was during his mercantile experience upon the Pacific coast, that Mr. Van Tine became acquainted with the beauty of the ceramic and textile productions of the two great nations beyond the western ocean. About 1866, he came to New York city and with small capital began to import Chinese and Japanese goods, and to introduce the beautiful productions of Asiatic art to the attention of local buyers. He may thus be said to have become for the second time a pioneer, and, as before, in an almost unexplored filed. Little was then known by the public at large concerning the variety and beauty of Chinese and Japanese goods, because scarcely anything of this nature had ever been received in New York up to that time beyond a few invoices of silk, porcelains and lacquered ware. Mr. Van Tine entered upon his new enterprise with his accustomed good judgment and after prudent study of the markets. A love of beautiful objects, formerly cherished by a few, had finally taken possession of the people of New York city and the American public at large, and the adornment of the home was leading to the purchase of every article, which would gratify a refined taste, including hangings, pictures, decorated pottery and elegant trifles of all kinds.
Mr. Van Tine opened his store just at the right time and throngs of buyers rewarded his enterprise. His first day's sale amounted to $50 only. Although insignificant in itself, this result was a surety of success to his mind and he prosecuted his business with vigor and confidence. When he finally began to order hundreds and thousands of the various articles which composed his stocks, the Japanese merchants looked at him with amazement, while buyers in new York were captivated by the variety and extent of the goods he spread before them. In time, he finally added the importation of Turkish rugs to his business and rose to be the leading merchant in the field in New York city. His operations compelled him to maintain branches and representatives in every part of the United States and in many countries abroad. At one time, he had customers in every State of the Union.
In 1870, he admitted to partnership, under the name of A. A. Van Tine & Co., James F. Sutton, who remained with him for twelve years and then retired. James I. Raymond was made a partner in 1875. Various other changes took place in the firm, and finally, in 1887, Mr. Van Tine retired, after an honorable career of nearly fifty years in practical business. He was able to enjoy a few years of well earned rest before his death. His wife and two daughters survived him.

(Continuation of Testimony taken on the Application for the Extension of the Patent of Groves & Baker)
Mrs. Harriet M. Vantine, a witness produced, sworn, and examined on the part of the applicants, testifies as follows:
Q1. What is your name and residence; and if married, to whom?
A. My name is Harriet M. Vantine; I reside in New York; I am married to Ashley A. Vantine.
Q2. Are you or not acquainted with the leading sewing machines now in general use?
A. I am.
Q3. Have you or not in use in your family any sewing machine, and if so, what kind, and how long?
A. I have not a present; I have just returned from California; I had one there for eight years.
Q4. Does it or not use a circular under-needle?
A. It does.
Q5. From your knowledge of the other leading sewing machines, and the work performed by them, what superiority, if any, does the Grover & Baker machine, having a circular under-needle and four-motion feed, have over any other machine?
A. First, the elasticity of the stitch; second, the ease with which work can be taken out when it is necessary, also the capability of making the embroidery stitch; the little trouble required to learn to work the machine. My little girl, eight years old, can work the machine as well as I can, almost.
Q6. What is the extent or class of work that can be done on a Grover & Baker machine?
A. I have done all kinds of family sewing and embroidery on it.
Q7. Can embroidery be done on any other machine, so far as you know?
A. It cannot.
Q8. Will you estimate, as near as you can, the annual saving in your family by the use of a sewing-machine?
A. In time, it would save fully half.
Q9. How would it be as regards the same amount of work if paid for?
A. The machine would pay for itself three times over if I had to hire all the work done.
Cross examined by Mr. Chitenden, on the part of James Willcox.
CrossQ1. You say you are acquainted with the leading sewing-machines---what ones?
A. The Florence, Willcox & Gibbs, and some with Wheeler & Wilson's. I have worked on all of those.
CrossQ2. State the extent of your acquaintance with each?
A. I worked on the Willcox and Gibbs for a year, and with the others I have merely tried them with a view of purchasing, and finally decided to take Grover & Baker.
CrossQ3. What do mean by the four-motion feed, in answer to the fifth direct interrogatory?
A. I can't answer as to the four-motion feed; I don't understand the term.
CrossQ4. Is not precisely the same feed used in the Grover & Baker, the Willcox & Gibbs, and the Florence machine?
A. I hardly know.
CrossQ5. Is not the stitch alike in these three machines?
A. I think not.
CrossQ6. Describe the difference between the stitch made by the Grover & Baker and the Florence machines, if you can?
A. In the Florence machine the stitches are alike on bothe side, and they are impossible to rip out. In the Grover & Baker, the stitch forms a chain on the underside, and may be ripped out at pleasure, but will not rip unless desired.
CrossQ7. Describe the difference between the Groves & Baker and Willcox & Gibbs machines in the stitch?
A. The Willcox & Gibbs is a single thread, and unravels easily, and care has to be taken with that machine to fasten all the ends.
CrossQ8. Can you tell the quantity of thread that it takes to sew a yard seam on single thickness of muslin on a Grover & Baker machine?
A. I could not do it. I never made the estimate.
CrossQ9. Do you not know that the Grover & Baker machine has the reputation of using more thread than the other machines?
A. I do; then then I think the advantages of the machine far outweigh that.
CrossQ10. Do you, or not, regard the under surface of the stitch as rough and uneven compared with the Wheeler & Wilson lock-stitch?
A. It is no objection whatever to the machine.
CrossQ11. [Question repeated.]
A. It need not be rough and uneven, if ladies would only use the right kind of cotton.
CrossQ12. Do it think it practicable to make both sides of a chain-stitch smooth and regular?
A. I do not.
CrossQ13. Have you had suffiecient experience with the leading machines for sale in this city to be able to testify unqualifiedly, and from your own knowledge, of their merits compared with the Grover & Baker machine?
A. I think I have had.
CrossQ14. How much have you used the Wheeler & Wilson machines?
A. But a short time. I answered that before.• Passenger Manifest, 20 Oct 1892
