Carol,

Thanks so much for the information on Charles G. Vantyne.

I am a member of Phil Sheridan Camp 4, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and we are doing a project to collect as much information as possible on each of the over 400 veterans buried in the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) plot at Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, CA. Charles G. Vantyne is among them.

You can find him listed on our web site at: http://home.inreach.com/tadcamp/gar1.html

The information from his grave stone is as follows:

Charles G. Vantyne, Sgt. Co. B 98th NY Inf.

I can offer the following meager additional information about his military service:

--------------------------------------------

***REGIMENTAL HISTORY***

NEW YORK NINETY-EIGHTH REGIMENT.

This regiment, not now in existence, but at the time located in Erie county, was mustered in the United States service for a period of 100 days, August 10, 1864; commanded by Col. George Abbott, it (seven companies) served at the depot, Elmira, and was mustered out of the United States service December 22, 1864, at Buffalo, N.Y. It lost in this service by death, of disease, etc., three enlisted men.

--------------------------------------------

The regimental personnel list for this unit appears very incomplete and lists mostly officers. Charles is not listed there, but the following person is, undoubtedly a relative:

George K. Vantine
Residence not listed; 33 years old.
Enlisted on 7/14/64 at Clarence as a 2nd Lieutenant.
On 8/10/64 he was commissioned into "B" Co. NY 98th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 12/22/64 at Buffalo, NY

--------------------------------------------
Sorry that I don't have more information to offer. The information that you've provided will enhance our GAR project. If you would like a picture of his grave at Oak Hill Memorial Park I will be happy to oblige.

Best regards,
Tad

I am not certain this is the correct marriage. I need to have the certificate to confirm it. The town was abstracted as "Bing." so there's no proof of location, either.
