About this book

A historical sermon designed as a memorial to the inhabitants of Wantage, Sussex County, N.J. : containing an account of the first emigrants, their pedigree, dangers, deliverance, habits, religion, means of instruction, increase, improvements, and the present state of society amoung their descendants. p. 12
The Navarsink settlement, and all the line along the Vantine Kill and the Rosendall, were still more exposed. And although they served, in some good measure, as an out-post of safety to Wantage, yet an attack there was the signal of alarm here.• WARNING
This is just quesswork on this family. My correspondent, James V. Vantine, wrote me that he had read "a book" in the Sutro Library in San Francisco listing "One of the earliest land owners in Adams Co, PA as John Vantine (Fonteyn)," but James was unable to recall which book and I have been unable to find the reference. This may also be the wrong wife. (LDS IGI)

Lambert Janse Dorland also paid the same for his transport on the Bonte Koe and did quite well once he arrived in NY.
However, One of the major reasons that the Dutch left the areas of Somerset County may have been because of the Depression of 1765. In the Somerset County Genealogical Quarterly, Volume 5, No 4, December 1987, Fred Sisser III, Publisher. page 430, is an interesting article about this depression.
To summarize it: This is a Petition of Sundry inhabitants of the Province (mainly from inhabitants of Bridgewater Twp to William Franklin Esq. Govenor of NJ and Commander in Chief in and over the Province of NJ and to his Majesties Counsil and General Assembly). The application is among the Indentures Collection, Drawer II, Folder 5 of the Special Collections, Rutgers University Library.
Many of the inhabitants of this once flourishing Provincee are obliged thus to represent and make known the very deplorable and distressing condition many of the inhabitants of this once flourishing Province are reduced to. Due to the scarcety of circulating cash, the failing of the last summer and winter crops, the severe and consuming hard winter past which many who used to sell were obliged to buy and that at a high price, the Cramping and Lessoning of our Provision and Lumber Markets which not ownly lowers the price of our produce but also sinks the value of our lands and estates and creates a Gloomy prospect of paying our debts, which now become very large and distressing. Partly because of the many stores and great trust to people for goods and partly by the mulitude of law suits and actions brought againt debtors at the time, when it seems impossible to raise and considerable sums. Altho they have four times the value of real estate above what they owe, so that our goals are filled with prisioners for debt, and constables daily selling effects, lands and tenements, very often for for one quarter the value of them, where by the debts instead of being lesson'd are very often increased by the large bills and cost, wherefore we your Petitoners do pray that Your Honours would be pleased to have Compassion on this your bleeding Province and take our Condition into your mature consideration and to Pass an Act for sum in paper bills, to be struck and to issue on Land securities, 2ndly to restrain shopkeepers and other retailers from Trusting above six pounds to any one person, 3rdly-As also to lesson our court Terms and regulate their and the lawyers proceedings in the recovering of Debt so that the bills of cost might not be so extravagant, or to grant such other relief, in the premises etc.
Dated May 1765 and signed by: John Goldtrap, John Pool, Joseph Ross, Jr, Daniel Hendricks, James Wilson, Isaac Heron, Benjamin Harris, Nemeiah Vernon, John Steel, Wm Haddon, William Lane, Jacobes Hegeman, Jr, George Davis, Abraham Deboys, Samuel Willet, Peter Cavvelier, John Vantine, John Douw, Francis Laekes, Jacob Corssen, Stoffal Probasco, Joseph Line, Abraham Bolmer, Grear Brown, John Runyen, Robt McDuffee, John Favil, Thos McElrath, Thomas Cooper, William Sloan, Isaac Cooper, Sam Foster, Jos: Ankers, Peter Belyew, Briant Cain, Folkert Sebring, Elijah Tharp, Benjamin Sutten.
If this was happening in Bridgewater Twp Somerset County, it was happening in Montogomery Twp also. From 1769-1771 Lambert Dorland, grandson of Lambert Janse Dorland, mortgaged all his various lands, to Gerret Covenhoven of New Utrecht, Kings Co NY; and John Staats of L. I. and Nicholas Covenhoven of New Utrecht, Kings Co.,L.I. When Letters of Administration were drawn upon his death in Feb. 1772, his eldest son John renounced any claim he had on his fathers estate and stated that John Van Liew, and brother in law of Lambert was greatest creditor. The lands were sold. Lamberts sons and daughters and their children left the Montgomery Twp, Somerset Co area for Berkely Co, WVA and Conowago, PA. This is also another reason for the Colonists rising up against the English and creating the American Revolutionary War.

The following bit of history (and the cite) was forwarded to me yesterday.
The location of 'this Indian warfare' is supposed to be Sussex Co., NJ.
Can anyone provide any additional information? Who was Vantine and
especially who was 'the lad called Titsort?'
> .... the General Assembly on August 12, 1758, cited John Vantine and a
> lad called Titsort, and nine others who accompanied them, for bravery in
> this Indian warfare. The men were given $10 each, the lad $30 and
> Vantine 20 Spanish dollars. Vantine and this lad were each given a
> silver medal of the size of $1, on which was the figure of a prostrate
> Indian at the feet of Vantine and the Titsort lad, 'importing their
> victory over them and to commemorate their bravely and their country's
