Sarah A. Marthing and Willian Van Tine are listed as parents for Ann E. Van Tine Edwards Dowling' on her death certificate.
Annie was born in 1826 in New York City, married Eden Edwards (b. 1809-1811 est.), also from NY and had 3 children: William, Sarah and George. They moved to California in 1859 as Eden was a miner. Eden left the family to look for gold and the last documentation I can find, he was still mining in 1880 in Sonora, Ca. Annie divorced him in 1862 in San Francisco and married Madison Dowling, also of NY. They moved to Alameda County approx. 1880 and Madison died by 1890. Annie lived with her daughter, Sarah "Sadie" Hodges, until her death in 1907. She is buried in Oakland. If anyone has information regarding Eden Edwards family or the Marthings and Van Tines, please contact Tina Havelka at havelka92@cs.com

Responding to Tina's first message
I came across your message and thought I might be able to help with my access to censuses and a couple of other databases. I'm otherwise doing some Martling research in another part of NY State.
Ann is listed in the 1850 census with her children William, Sarah and George in the 17th Ward, NYC, pg. 395. They are living in the household of Edwin Edstrom, cabinetmaker, 50, b. New Foundland. Sarah E. Edstrom, presumably his wife, 48, b. NY, children Emily F., 14 and Frances? F., 10. Also in the household are Sarah E. Valentine, 23 and Mary L. Valentine, 20, all b. NY. I suspect this is your Sarah "Marthing," married secondly to Mr. Edstrom, and "Van Tine" should be Valentine, all living together as an extended family. I don't find any of these people other than Ann and several of her children in later censuses. I have access to the 1829 NYC directory, which has a William Valentine at 140 Hester St. and the following Martlings (I find no Marthings in any NYC records): Abraham B., "keeper," City Hall, John, mason, 39 Broome St., William, "lumber-m.," 99 Hamersley (house), 294 Hudson (business). John is in the 1820 and 1830 NYC censuses. In 1820, John has a daughter 10-15 years old. Not exactly right (if Sarah was born about 1802), but with the censuses, they aren't always. Abraham B. is in the 1810 and 1830 censuses, but didn't have a daughter in the right age catagory (not close as with John). Another Abraham and a Daniel are in the 1810 census with a daughter in the right age group, but they aren't in NYC in 1820. Hope this is helpful!

Response to Doug 23 Feb 2005
Doug, Thank you for the info. Ann & the Edwards children are also listed in Eastchester with her husband, Eden. It didn't occur to me that they would appear twice in the same census. The time frame is only July to August, so it's hard to understand what was going on. Poverty and/or domestic discord is my guess. Ann's daughter Sadie filled out her death certificate and I assume (again) that she would know the correct last names. I'll need to track down the 4 other daughters of Sarah to know for sure. I found a Wm VanTine living on 11th in NYC in a city directory in 1840, I believe. I belong to several on line sites also, but am always grateful when someone points me in the right direction.
There is info in the book, Gotham, relating to Abraham "Bram" Martling and his tavern that was used for early Tammany meetings. Let me know if I can help you in any way. Thanks, Tina

Additional Response to Doug 25 Feb 2005
Doug- Thanks to you, I found Mrs. Sarah E. Edstrom, age 60, from NY, buried in Lone Mt cemetery in San Francisco in 1861. She must have moved with the Edwards in 1859. I have yet to find them in the 1860 census and currently conclude that they were on their way west. It's interesting to me that Ann divorced Eden in 1862, the year after her mother died, after 22+ years of marriage. - Tina

This could be one of several William Vantines. There is no proof presently that this is the correct family.
