147. Woman standing in front of painted backdrop with beach scene, ca. 1900. Tintype, approximately 4 ¼ x 2 ½ inches with paper mat. Photographer: Isaac Van Tine, Long Branch. Collection: Gary D. Saretzky.
Painted backdrops were used extensively by photographers to suggest place, beginning in the daguerrean era around 1850, and backdrops depicting the ocean are often found in Jersey Shore tintypes. The photographer, Isaac Van Tine, was born in January 1862 in New Jersey and spent his youth in the Trenton area, where his brothers Henry and Peter [Vantine] were also photographers. Isaac had several locations in Long Branch between 1896 and 1902. This tintype is from the one at Cranmer's Beach, corner Ocean and Chelsea avenues.

Posted Query on 02/25/00 for surname(s) MILLER, VANTINE
Surnames: MILLER, VANTINE
I'm looking for any information concerning my
grandparents: Elmer Edgar MILLER and Nettie VANTINE
MILLER. They lived in York County. Elmer was born in the
late 1800s and died approximately 1956. Nettie
evidently died much earlier than that. Their son, Elmer
Eugene MILLER was my father. My dad was born in 1915
in York County and died in the Washington D.C. area in
1973. We never had contact with his family as I was
growing up and I'd very much like to know something
about my grandparents. I'd particularly like to see a
picture of my grandmother. Please help.

Hartman - Amanda
, daughter of Jacob B. and Emaline (Kreider) Weldy, was born near Nappanee, Ind., July 22, 1878; died at her home near Milford, Ind., June 27, 1938, after a brief illness of two days; aged 59 y. 11 m. 5 d. In the winter of 1894 she was converted and the following spring united with the North Main St. Mennonite Church at Nappanee. She had a deep interest in spiritual things, and rendered whatever services she was able to, for Christ and the Church. Nov. 14, 1895, she was united in marriage to Christian Hartman of near Foraker, Ind. They having no children of their own, they opened their hearts and home to Malard D. Van Tine, when he was eight years old, and cared for him and instructed him in the right way of life. Surviving her, besides her husband and the foster son, is 1 brother (John C. Weldy of near Nappanee) and many other relatives and friends. One sister (Anna Yoder) preceded her in death. Our sister will be greatly missed, but since God in His wisdom has seen fit to take her to Himself, we humbly bow in submission to His will. Funeral services were held June 30 at the North Main St. Mennonite Church, conducted by Brethren Homer F. North and Ray F. Yoder. Text, Heb. 10:37. Burial in the South Union Cemetery.

Regimental History
PENNSYLVANIA
40TH INFANTRY
(Three Years)

Fortieth Infantry.-Cols., T. F. Gallagher, Samuel M. Jackson; Lieut.Cols., James R. Porter, Samuel M. Jackson, Daniel S. Porter, Robert A. McCoy; Majs. S. M. Jackson, Robert Litzinger, Peter A. Johns, James P. Speer, Robert A. McCoy, James C. Burke.

The 40th, the 11th reserve regiment, was composed of men from the western part of the state, who rendezvoused at Camp Wright, near Pittsburg. On June 24, 1861, the regiment left camp and proceeded to Harrisburg, thence to Washington, where it was mustered into the U. S. service on the 29th and 30th for a three years, term.

In July it was ordered to the camp of the reserves at Tennallytown, assigned to the 2nd brigade of the reserve corps and stationed at Great Falls, where it had a skirmish with the enemy posted on the other side of the Potomac. Winter quarters were established near Langley, Va., and much enthusiasm was aroused by the victory at Dranesville, though the 2nd brigade arrived too late to participate.

The regiment served on the Peninsula in the corps under Gen. Fitz John Porter; was present at the battles of Mechanicsville, and Gaines, mill, where the regiment met with disaster, though it held its ground in the face of the enemy's fire until the troops on both sides were driven back. The smoke and the density of the wood in which the battle raged prevented the troops from observing that they were being cut off, and when surrounded they endeavored to fight their way back. This became impossible and the regiment was captured after losing 46 men killed and 1O9 wounded.

One company of the regiment under Capt. Porter, escaped capture, having been detailed on special duty. This company, representing the regiment fought at Glendale and shared in the second battle of Bull Run attached to the 3rd brigade. At South mountain, Antietam and Fredericksburg, the depleted ranks of the 40th conducted themselves gallantly.

In Feb. 1863, the regiment was ordered to Washington to rest and recruit. With the 5th corps it shared in the Gettysburg campaign, the pursuit of the Confederate army, the skirmishes at Bristoe and Rappahannock Stations and the Mine Run campaign. The reserves were posted on guard duty along the Orange & Alexandria railroad during the winter of 1863-64, the 40th being encamped at Warrenton Junction and Bristoe Station.

Beginning with the Wilderness, the regiment engaged in the battles of the Army of the Potomac during May, 1864, its last engagement being at Bethesda Church, after which the veterans and recruits were transferred to the 190th Pa. infantry and the regiment returned to Pittsburg, where it was mustered out on June 14, 1864.
