There were a number of other Montgomery families in Decatur County. This John is the only one in Clay Township. All the others are in Washington township. A book (need call #) on early Land Records for Decatur County indicated that one of the earliest land owners was a John Montgomery (A:19) from Gallatin County, Kentucky.

There were a number of Montgomerys listed and I need to compare them all to these 1850 census records. The 1830 and 1840 census records compare with this John Montgomery, but I didn't copy them either. The land records book had a John Montgomery and Elizabeth as early land owners (C:190). This would appear to be the Elizabeth Montgomery age 56, b. NJ who appeared in the 1850 census as assumably a widow. On the same page was John B. Montgomery, age 30, b. OH. Others listed were Ann, age 44, b. KY; Hugh b. PA, age 56, and J. G. H., age 30, b. KY.

I'm a little shakey on whether this is the daughter of William Henry Van Tine and Julia Maria Herrick. I think that she may have resumed her maiden name after the divorce. One thing to help would be to find J.P. Moody and discover if he is also divorced.

My grandfather, Gerald Martin VanTine, was a son of Wilmer VanTine. My Grandpa and Woodie were brothers along with Willard, Ralph, Thelma and Geneva who died young, and Neva. I never met Grandpa VanTine, because he died in 1960. I was born in 1962.

Wilmer was born in 1882 and married Nellie Rose Lumberry. Both are buried in Yates City. Willard and his wife Florence are also buried in Yates City. Martin Augustus VanTine, born in NJ in 1839 married Sarah and they are also buried in Yates City. My mom and dad use to go see Uncle Woodie in Arkansas and I saw Uncle Willard before he died at a Lumberry family reunion in Yates City. That was the first time I met Aunt Neva and her daughter, who still live in Nebraska. I have alot of info on the family and have been out of the Family History gathering for quite some time but would like to get back into it. I use to live in Wisconsin and now in in Colorado. Let me know if your interested.
