Post-it pasted to Hannah Parcells online in Barbara Kaye's database.
Barbara, I've been working on this family again. I ordered Alfred Steven's death certificate, but it didn't name his parents. I have been wrestling with Hannah Parcells named as "aunt" on the 1880 Census. I went back and compared the family through the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses. Hannah should have shown on the 1830 census, but only two girls are there: Ann (b. 1827) and Sarah (b. 1815). Sarah is missing from the 1820 census. There just isn't any spare female to be Hannah. Could she actually be, like I suspect Alfred is, a late-life child and really William Stevens Sr.'s sister? Did you get the surname Stevens through deduction by assuming that she was a daughter of William or is there actually a marriage record to Parcells?
This is such a very tangled family.
Thanks,
Carol Yocom

Had Been Ill About a Year and
Came to Sanitarium
Here in June.
An Aid to Sir Gilbert
Was Keenly Interested in Activities
of Her famous Husband--Daughter
of Late A. A. Vantine.
Lady Amy Elizabeth Parker, the wife of Sir Gilbert Parker, the novelist, died yesterday at the Harbor Sanitarium, 667 Madison Avenue. She had been in failing health for a year, and came to New York from Newport at the end of June to enter the sanitarium for treatment. Funeral services will be held in St. Bartholomew's Chapel tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, at which Bishop Manning will officiate. Interment will be at Belleville, Ontario, Canada, Sir Gilbert's home.
Sir Gilbert and Lady Parker arrived in New York from England last November, going directly to Aiken, S. C. They returned to this city in March and went to Newport to visit Lady Parker's niece, Mrs. John Aspgren. Lady Parker was the daughter of the late Ashley A. Van Tine of this city. She was married to Sir Gilbert in 1895.
Lady Parker was born in San Francisco. She is survived by her huband, a sister, Mrs. Daniel Bacon, and a niece, Mrs. John Aspgren. She was a member of the Women's Art Association of London and had been interested in her husband's activities. She closely watched his career in Parliament and assisted him in his literary work, although she never wrote for publication herself.

THE BUSINESS INSTITUTE
p. 1117
Elmer E. Vantine, who is serving as secretary and treasurer, was born on a farm west of Pontiac, in Oakland county, Michigan, on the 4th of April, 1878, his parents being Albert E. and Sarah P. Vantine. He was graduated from the Pontiac high school in June, 1899, and from 1900 until 1902 was a student at the University of Michigan, after which he engaged in surveying for fifteen months. For about two years he followed the profession of teaching and then became a stockholder of The Business Institute. Soon afterward he was elected vice president and continued to act in that capacity for about four years, when he was made secretary and treasurer. He is now serving in those offices and his thorough understanding of the practical as well as the theoretical side of business life and well directed efforts have been resultant factors in the upbuilding and expansion of the Institute. Mr. Vantine is a sagacious, farsighted business man, whose investments have been judiciously placed and he is the owner of a well improved farm of one hundred and twenty acres in oakland county, Michigan. He has acquired valuable real estate holdings in the city and also owns high class stocks and bonds.
In Detroit, on the 3d of February, 1920, Mr. Vantine was united in marriage to Miss Florence Jones, a duaghter of John H. Jones, a well known farmer residing at Croswell, Michigan, and the have become the parents of a son, Robert E., whose birth occurred in Detroit on the 7th of November, 1921.
Mr. Vantine is a member of the North Woodward Methodist Episcopal church and he is also connected with the Business Exchange Club and the University of Michigan Club. He is a strong advocate of the cause of prohibition and is a republican in his political views, while fraternally he is identified with the Masons, having attained the fourteenth degree in that order.• 1880 Federal Census 1616, 1880 - , White Lake, Oakland, Michigan
