In 1811 he married Frances Phillips daughter of Catherine Phillips and David Phillips. They were cousins. They are buried in the old Dutch Church burying ground Fishkill Village.

Frances Phillips great-grand father came from Holland. He built the half stone house nest to what is now Charles Brinkerhoff place on the left-hand side of the Poughkeepsie road.

He had four sons and two daughters. Grand-mother thought that some were born in Holland. One of the sons married Lavinia Sawyer. They lived on leased land on the Verplanck place. The Verplanck land then reached to Fishkill Village.

Phillips and Lavinia Sawyer Phillips had three boys and three girls. Two died young.

Abram married Easter -----
Catherine married her cousin David Phillips
One married Polly Ostrander, they bothe died of fever while on their way to California.
One child never married

David and Catherine Phillips had two children Abram and our grand-mother Frances.

Abram lived married and died in Bloomingburg Sullivan Co. N.Y.

Frances was married to John Van Tine son of Cornelius and Nellie Van Tine in 1811. A few years after their marriage while their son Samuel was a baby grand father was obliged to go to the war of '12. Grand-father's sister Betsey lived in the house with grand-mother while both of their husbands were in the war. For days together they never saw a man pass their houses. The only men left in a long distance around them was one old man and a foolish young man. The women would nail up their windows an hour before sunset.

Grand-father walked from New York City where the army was stationed to Fishkill between sunrise and sunset, stayed two or three days and then walked back.

Interments in the PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, NEW HAMBURGH CEMETERY

"Old Gravestones of Dutchess County, New York" by J. W. Poucher published in 1924, pages 266-272.

CLASSIFICATION: Churchyard.
LOCATION: In the village of New Hamburgh, on a hill to the north and east of the
New York
Central and Hudson River Railroad drawbridge,
CONDITION: Overgrown and deserted.
INSCRIPTIONS: 322 in number. Copied September 22, 23, 24, 1914, by J. W.
Poucher, M. D., Mrs. Poucher and Mrs. Harris S. Reynolds.
REMARKS: The present edifice occupied by the Presbyterian Church of New Hamburgh stands west of the tracks of the New York Central Railroad, but the burying ground on the hill to the east marks the site of the first church building. The Church was organized about 1809 and on June 26 of that year the
trustees took title to the land on the hill (see Dutchess County deeds, Liber 39, page 119). One of the four trustees was George Washington Clinton, son of George Clinton sometime Governor of New York and Vice President of the United States. George Washington Clinton was later buried here (see below). The Clinton residence was near the bank of the Hudson not far north of New Hamburgh.

General Notes for Child Samuel Edgar Van Tine

Birth, Marriages, and Deaths: from the Family Bible of Samuel Edgar Van Tine, which was in the possession of Miss Elizabeth Innes until her death. Now in the possession of Carol Van Tine Yocom.

Pictures: Samuel E, Ann Cobb, Samuel Jr, Frances, Alice, Ellen, Ann Eliz, Albert, and Lillian--also from Betty Innes.

Federal Censuses: 1840, 50, 60, 70, 80, 1900.
(1890 census almost entirely destroyed by fire.)

NYC Directories: 1822-1900.

Ann Van Tine W not reported 1840 60 NY
en/w Maurice Burnton as sister-in-law

According to my father Samuel Edgar Van Tine started out as a bookkeeper in New York City as a young married man. He became a speculator in the NYC real estate market until he was forced out by rising real estate taxes. At one time he held land on Wall Street and other major NYC streets, but eventually sold it. (No corroboration) I have been unable to find his probate in Westchester County (he died in 1871, before Morrisania was joined to NYC) but Ann Elisabeth's will is on file in NYC.

For most of the work on this family, as on this entire family line up to Isaac Fonteyn, I am extremely grateful for the work done by the Innes sisters, Betty, Mildred, and Ethel. They established this line for their DAR papers, but had they not done so, I doubt that anyone could have found Samuel's parents by standard methods. He has no death record or probate. I have found nothing whatsoever to tie him to Fishkill. In Fishkill, the church that most likely had any christening record, St. Anna's now named St. Luke's, burned in 1865.
