Hi Marybeth,
I saw your message on paallegh mail list, and that you were researching Phillips. What branch are you researching? Mine are from mostly McKeesport & Westmoreland Co area's (that I know of so far). My branch starts with Joseph R. Phillips, born in Westmoreland Co, m: Catherine Vantine-Phillips, they later moved to Allegheny Co, McKeesport area for the most part. Their son Charles V., m: Anna Sampson, their son William Bauer Phillips was my grandfather. Any of this sound familiar? Would love to share info if so. Look forward to hearing from you. Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend! TTerri• Researcher, Rootsweb.com/Hsent
Hi Carol,
Had written to about a year ago, about Catherine Vantine Phillips, married to Joseph R. Phillips. Hadn't known where she fit in with the other Vantines, just received her death certif, and she is the daughter of Thomas Vantine and Mary Scott. Abraham Knight Vantine was her brother, and Catherine named a son after him (Abraham Knight Phillips). Just wanted to update you. Also have a photo of above three mentioned if you're interested.
Take care, Terri![]()

Excerpt from Vantine Family Book in the possession of Richard Van Tyne of Richardson, Texas.
Our grand-father: John Van Tine son of Cornelius and Nellie Ames Van Tine was born February 7th 1787 in Fishkill Landing and at one time when a boy lived in the old De Windt house now called Van Wagen house on the Poughkeepsie road. He learnt the blacksmith's trade in his brother Samuel's shop but his health failed him early in life, consequently he followed farming most of his days. In 1811 he married Frances Phillips daughter of Catherine Phillips and David Phillips. They were cousins. They are buried in the old Dutch Church burying ground (in) Fishkill Village. Frances Phillips great-grand father came from Holland. He built the half stone house next to what is now Charles Brinkerhoff place on the left hand side of the Poughkeepsie road. He had four sons and two daughters. Grand-mother thought the sons were born in Holland. One of the sons married Lavinia Sawyer. They lived on leased land in the Verplanck place. The Verplanck land then reached to Fishkill Village. Phillips and Lavinia Sawyer Phillips had three boys and three girls. Two died young. Abram married Easter Catherine " her cousin David Phillips One married Polly Ostrander, they both died of fever while on their way to California. One child never married. David and Catherine Phillips had two children Abram and our grand-mother Frances. Abram lived married and died in Bloomingburg Sullivan Co. N.Y. Frances was married to John Van Tine son of Cornelius and Nellie Van Tine in 1811.• 1790 Census, 1790 - , Fishkill, Dutchess, New York
I'm using this Peter Phillips because his next neighbor is Jacobus Phillips and Lavinia's neighbor in 1800 is James Phillips.

• Diary, 1836-1839 - , Stiles, Cayuga, New York
Author: Van Tyne, Jacob S.
Title: Diary, 1836-1839.
Description: 1 v. (26 leaves) ; 19 cm.
Notes: Jacob S. Van Tyne was an itinerant house and sign painter who originally made his home until 1836 in Stiles, Cayuga County, NY (now Stiles Station of Onondaga County, NY).
This diary recounts the journey of itinerant painter Jacob S. Van Tyne from 1836-1839 as he traveled from Stiles, NY through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The book contains approximately 34 pages of diary entries which vividly describe stopping points along the way, a ledger of accounts for work performed during Van Tyne's travels, and lists of painting supplies. Also included are drafts of several letters and a couple of short poems. The item contains some reversed writing, probably done with a mirror. Of particular interest are several recipes for mixing "grounds" (primer paints) as well as detailed lists of paints and supplies including their prices and colors. The poems are interspersed with the ledger and recipe entries, making the organization and the chronological order of this manuscript rather confusing.
Moroccan leather binding with foldover flaps; loose spine; broken hinges; some ink bleeding; missing pages.
