JOHNSTON REED Was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., in 1841, and has always lived in this county. His father, David Reed, is still spared, but his mother, Nancy (Vantine), is deceased. The lady who he chose for a helpmate through life was Sarah Garwin, and they were married in New Mexico, Sept. 31, 1885. His wife was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., in 1844, and passed to her reward in New Mexico Sept. 10, 1888. Her parents, Marvin and Elenore (Vannosdale) Garwin, are also deceased. Comrade Reed underwent the hardships and privations of a soldier's life and was a brave and true defender of his country. He was 20 years old when he enlisted from Freeport, Pa., Sept. 10, 1861, as a private in Co. F, 78th Pa. V. I. He was honorably discharged at Kittanning, Pa., Nov. 4, 1864, and re-enlisted at Pittsburg, Pa., June 1, 1866, in Co. E, 2d Batl, 19th U.S. I. While in service he participated in the battles of his regiment. He was again discharged at Little Rock Ark., June 1, 1869. He re-enlisted in Co. E, 9th Inft., March 11, 1870, and was again discharged March 11, 1875. April 1875, he was again enrolled in Co. K, 5th U.S.I., and was honorably discharged April 7, 1880. He again enslisted in Co. F, 13th U.S.I., served till May 6, 1888, when he was transferred by order of War Dept. to Co. D, 10th U.S.I., and was granted his final honorable discharge Dec. 20, 1888, on surgeon's certificate of disability. During his service in the regular army, he was promoted to Corp., Sergt., and later transferred to messenger district Hd. Qtrs. at Santa Fe, N.M. His brother William served in 6th Pa. II.A. Comrade Reed is a member of Weaver Post, No. 32, in which he is O.D.; he is an invalid and he resides at Ingleside, Pa.

I found Samuel & Angeline Vantine Shuster in the 1880 census they were listed as Shusler so she was still alive in 1880 and the census still has her born in abt 1822 which matches the age of the 1850 census.
I did some checking on The mother of Johnston Reed. She was Nancy Vantine. Johnston was born in 1841 so his mother would likely have been born before 1821 as people married older then. Johnston was from the Freport Area. So my conclusion is that she is one of the other missing daughters from the 1840 census. As the elder Thomas Vantine seems to only had 2 sons that married. And Hezekian does not have a daughter by that name. And From my oral hamily history that Angeline's mother was Nancy this leads me to assume that she was the oldest daughter and Thomas was like married before. Even if this Nancy Vantine was born in 1820, then Thomas was still 24 years old so that is possibile.
I'm trying to tract down more information on this family. But there are several unrelated Reed families in this area and Johnston was a Military Man serving from the early part of the Civil War through 1888. Later he lived in Blair County which is were Altoona is located. The Little Bio I found on him mentions a Brother William who served in the Civial War in the 6th PA Heavy Artillery which was a locally recruited unit I may get some good info from William's Pension. There father was David Reed. The Bio states that Nancy was deceased prior to the writing of the Bio.
I found a David Reed born about 1815 in PA living in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, PA in the 1880 census he was widowed and had a son David born about 1850 in PA in his household and a widowed daughter Mary McWinney born abt 1844 along with her 3 children Margaret Abt 1866, Alfaretta abt 1869 and Nancy abt 1862. Notice the name Nancy for the oldest daughter of Mary.
I think its highly linkly that this is the family of Nancy Vantine Reed

......
I orgot to mention that the David Reed I found in Allegheny Township lived 6 houses away from Thomas Vantine (1796-?)
......
