General Notes for Child George Washington Reeder

Reeder Newsletter, 1986, submitted by Jay G. Lamb, Box 745, Bartlesville, OK, 74005.

"Included in information received from Mrs. G. A. Reeder by Charles Wells Reeder and included in his collection at the Ohio State Library, Columbus, Ohio is the following: One Reeder came from Germany and settled in Tennessee - Had a Powder mill - was blown up - had 2 sons, Geo. and Wm. Wm. stayed in Jonesborough Tenn. Geo. moved to Ind. - had 4 sons. Thomas (4), Wm (6), & John (4), & Joseph (9 all in Cass Mo.)

The origin of this information is not known. Thomas did have four children by his first marriage. William and John did have the number of children shown; however, Joseph had 12 children. Interestingly Elizabeth, daughter of George reported to have said that her father sometimes spoke German to entertain the children, but would not allow them to speak German.

A grandson of William, son of George, wrote to Mr. Truman A. Reeder of Feb. 14, 1956 the following:
Grandfather knew that he had a relative by the name of Jesse Reeder that drowned in the Deleware [sic] R. while on a fishing trip. Jesse was in the line of uncle or great uncle I can't remember which. If I remember correctly, Jesse [sic] father was a Charles Reeder.

The "History of Cass and Bates Counties, Missouri", 1883, page 544 states that George Reeder, father of Joseph M. Reeder, was a native of Georgia. However, census enumerations of George Reeder's children indicate that their father was born in N. C., Tenn. and Va.

Washington Co., Tenn. records copied by the W.P.A. include tax lists, 1814-1819. George Reeder, 1 WP [white person], is listed in Capt. Brown's Co. for 1817 through 1819.

Washington Co., Tenn., Will Book 1, Page 197 and actual will at the courthouse and County Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions 1829-1831, copied by the W.P.A., show that Elizabeth Webb's will dated 23 Dec. 1827 was witnessed by John Rose, George Reeder and Allen T. Rose. The will was proven in court on 13 July 1829 by oaths of John Rose and Allen T. Rose, two of the subscribing witnesses. In Carter Co., Tenn. on 12 Jan. 1811, a Mary Reeder married John Rose. He was likely the above John Rose and the one later in Putnam Co., Ind. and Clay Co., Ind. Mary Reeder, his wife, could have been related to George Reeder.

Microfilm of records for Deer Creek Church, Putnam Co., Ind., at the Indiana State Library, Indianapolis, Ind., indicate that Jane Reder [sic] became a member in November 1829. Later (probably in 1831) John Rose and Polly Rose became members. Records of Mill Creek Church, Putnam Co., Ind. owned by Mr. Worth M. Buis, Indianapolis, Ind., show that Jane Reeder joined that new church in April 1830 and that she had joined another church (New Providence Baptist Church) approximately Febuary [sic] 1840.

Records of the Former General Land Office, now in the National Archives show cash certificate file numbers 31307 for the NE 1/4 of NW 1/4 Sec. 36, Twp 13N, R 3W and 32398 for NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 Sec. 36, Twp 13N, R 3W, both in the name of George Reeder, dated Dec. 29, 1836 and Aug. 21, 1837, respectively, issued at Crawfordsville, Ind., for $50 each. This land was sold by George and Jane Reeder to Samuel Landes on Nov. 16, 1842 for $400 (Putnam Co., Ind. Deed Book I, Page 400).

Jane Reeder is reported to have been the first adult buried in the New Providence Cemetery in Putnam Co., Ind. No tombstone has been found. George Reeder moved his family to Pike Co., Ill. where his son, Thomas, lived and died there shortly after the death of his wife. The children returned on their own to Putnam Co., Ind. where they were placed in homes of their mother's relatives, the Sherrills."

William Francis Yocom, attorney at law, Staunton, Ind., was born in Dick Johnson Township September 14, 1847, and is the fourth in a family of ten children, nine of whom are living. His father, Isom Yocum, came to this county from Kentucky in 1832. His early education was limited to the common schools, but being ambitious and persevering he gained by hard study a superior education. He has been a teacher in the public schools of this county fifteen years, and is highly esteemed. In 1872, he began the study of law, and in 1874 was admitted to the bar, and commenced practicing. March 19, 1874, he married Mary J. Reeder, it being her twentieth birthday.

They have five children-- Clarence Lilbert, born October 16, 1874; Henry Crawford, December 2, 1875; Roswell Dale, December 18, 1877; Maud D., October 6, 1879; Bessie Pearl, April 31, 1883. Mr. Yocom is identified with the political interests of the Democratic party, being one of their most prominent workers. He was Deputy Sheriff of Clay County from 1875 to 1877. While he was holding this office, the county records were moved from Bowling Green to Brazil. Since 1877, he has practiced law in Staunton.' ( Counties of Clay and Owen, Indiana. Historical and Biographical. Charles Blanchard, Editor, 1884.)

'William F. Yocum, native of Clay county, son of Isom Yocum, born September 14, 1847; acquired a good common school education, and taught successfully in the public schools of this county and in the state of Illinois for a period of ten or twelve years. In 1872 he began reading law and two years later was admitted to the bar. On the 19th day of March, 1874, he married Mary J. Reeder, on her twentieth birthday, an assistant teacher in the Staunton schools, of which he was the principal. For the years 1875-'76 he was deputy sheriff under his uncle, Jesse Yocum. Succeeding this term of service he engaged in the practice of law at Staunton. In 1890-'91 he served for a time as deputy auditor under his brother, Matthew R. Yocum. He died July 13, 1892, aged 44 years, 9 months and 29 days, survived by his wife and five children--three sons and two daughters. Mr. Yocum was a man of good native ability and liberal acquirements, much above the average as an instructor and disciplinarian.'
