Note: There are two Isaac Vantines shown on Mss #829
with identical service. One is listed as "widow's son."
Regarding the above entry, there are two possible Isaac's alive
at this time, but the other's father, Ephraim, is still alive
in 1783 while this Isaac's father, Charles, died about 1766.
There is a strong possibility that two Isaacs lived in the same
area at the same time and that their families are mixed
together. Isaac and Anne Schuurman Van Tine definitely lived in
the area, but is the Isaac who shows up with "Altie" in the
deed records and one christening the same one?

FROG'S POINT
A peculiar name, Frog's Point first appears in the land records in an 1842 deed in which Darius Holly mortgaged to Hanford Sellick three acres "on the Mountain at Frog's Point so called." An 1843 deed refers to six acres "on the West Mountain near Frog's Point."
The locality seems to be somewhere near the intersection of Peaceable Hill Road and Peaceable Ridge Road.

Although the name probably was a reference to the amphibian, it's also possible that it was slang for a Frenchman or Dutchman who lived or owned land near the point. Frog has been used as a term for a Dutchman since the 1600's. The French were contemptuously called frogs or frog-eaters because of their taste for the legs of this creature. Interestingly enough, the Dauchy family, of French origin, owned land for many years at or near Frog's Point.

There is a William Scofield in Clinton County, Ohio. His possible grandson is Lafayette Scofield who lives next to Hannah and William in the 1850 census.

This is a possibility for Hannah -- There is an Alva living next to the family in 1850 -- possible nephew. This Alva doesn't have a link to the next generation in Kaye's database, but the dates would fit for him to be a son of Alvah, son of John, thus Hannah's nephew. Whew. NO proof whatsoever.

She died 28 May 1871, was female, born Stamford, white, residence at death - Darien. Unfortunately, while there was a column for the names of parents, almost all of the recorded deaths did not give this information, and Hannah STEVENS' death record was no exception. She died of "Complicated Disease."

General Notes (Husband)

>Name note: Darien VR has two entries for a William Stevens, duplicates I think!

Notes on William Stevens and Hannah Scofield: The death certificate of John Henry STEVENS gives William, born Darien, Conneticut, as his father and Hannah, name mistakenly in birthplace, as his mother. Darien VR has it correctly. The death certificate of James E. Stevens gives William Stevens and Hannah Scofield as parents, both born USA. Judith Plummer reports in her letter of 5 August 1987 (Document "B") that she is unable to find a death certificate for William Stevens in Darien records. She did locate the death of Hannah STEVENS, widow, age 75, on page 472, Vol 4, 1869-1909, Darien Vital Records. She died 28 May 1871, female, born Stamford, white, residence at death-Darien. Her parents names were not given. She died of "Complicated Disease." Judith Plummer was wrong. There were two death records in the Darien VR for Wm Stevens'. One died 14 Feb 1855, was a laborer, b. Darien. No age or occupation was given. The second entry was for Wm Stephens, age 68, occupation "nothing", b. Darien, d. Feb 1854 of intemperance. I think these are the same person and a mistake was made in the books. The entry isn't very flattering.

She also copied Deed Records of Darien, letter 23 May 1987 (Document "A"), which seem to indicate a relationship between Hannah STEVENS and the HOLLY and SCOFIELD families.

Research Notes (Wife)

I have been trying to find the ancestors of Hannah Scofield and may have a clue, but it is only a possibility.

From Volume 3 (1841-1850) Darien Land Records (Research by Judith Plummer in 1987)
3:563 - Grantors Darius Holly & Deborah Holly his wife of Ridgefield, Fairfield Co., CT, for $15, to Grantee Hannah Stevens, wife of William Stevens of Darien in sd County, a Quit-Claim deed to "a certain tract of land lying in Darien aforesaid being the place on which Sarah Scofield Dec'd formerly resided in quantity one rood more or less with a dwelling house thereon, Bounded South on land of William Lockwood and Moses Waterbury and all other sides by highway. The right we convey above being one undivided sixth part of said premises." Signed Darius Holly, Deborah (her "X" mark) Holly, witnessed by Harvey Smith (JP) and Marth Seymour. Dated and ack. in Ridgefield, 9 Sept. 1843, rec'd 12 May 1849.

I have followed Darius Holly/Hawley in the 1850 and 1860 Census in Ridgefield, and find Deborah Hawley/Holly in 1870 in Bridgeport.

You will notice that Deborah is a correct age to be a sister to Hannah Scofield and I believe that she is. I believe that their mother was Sarah Scofield who died about 1843. I don't have a relationship to Cornelius Scofield at this time, but suspect he would be a nephew.

There is a second possible link to the Hawley/Holly family in that I have placed Abner Stevens and Sarah Holly as a possible set of parents for William Stevens -- based on the 1790-1840 census records with your (Barbara Kaye) data as a guide.

There has to be a missing daughter of one of the Vantines that moved to Allgheny Township, Westmorland County Pa in the 1810's.

I am descended from an Angeline Vantine who married a Samuel Shuster (1820-1880) There First son was born in 1848 so she had to be born before 1829. The 1850 census she is listed as 28 years old.

Oral family history states that she was the daughter of Thomas Vantine. As the elder Thomas Vantine Died in 1815 this leads me to assume that her father was Thomas Vantine (1796-aft 1880). But her birth year is before the year would be before the date you ahve of the marriage of Thoams with Mary Scott. How certain are you of that date and clues to another wife.

Angeline is diffent descended from the Elder Thomas Vantine the naming of the Children are very fimilair there is an Abraham Shuster and my direct ancestor is Charles Snowden Shuster. Note that there is a Charles S. Vantine and a Snowden Vantine in the Thomas Vantine 1796-aft 1880 family as well.

IAW the 1880 census Thomas Vantine (1796- was still alive but widowed. The 1850 Census lists him in Mifflin Township, Allegheny County. He seems to have moved around a bit in the general area. The Pennsylvania Canal passed trough this area and empties into the Allegheny River near Freeport, Pa this was a major traffic area before railroads. I grew up and live in this same area.

The Husband of Angeline Vantine, Samual Shuster and a few of their children are burried in Brookline Cemetery with want I assume is the brother of Angeline. There is no headstone for Angeline so I don't know if she is buried there or not.

Note: Mathias is referred to as a "well to do German" in the Draper papers. This was from Mathias's grandson, born in 1763, when he was 80 years old. This is 182 years after the immigration of Heinrich Jochem and represents a six generation removal from that event. In heritage, Mathias was in fact more German and German-Swiss than he was anything else, and the prevalence of Palatinate Germans with the Jochem/Yocum surname, who were also in the flood of pioneers moving from PA into the VA backcountry would make an assumption of German background that much easier. Compounding this assumption is the fact that Dutch itself is a Germanic language, and the very word "Dutch" is so similar to "Deutsch" that many PA Germans themselves became known as the PA Dutch -- a reverse error. Mathias bought land in PA, but not liking the laws there, he moved his family to the north neck of VA and settled on land granted to Lord Fairfax. He was in the first group to bring wagons down the South Branch of the Paotomac River and over the mountains into what is now known as West Virginia. They settled there about 1745. Mathias was in Greenbrier Co., VA, in 1751, and in Augusta Co., VA, in 1756. Place of death given as Muddy Creek, Greenbriar, WV. Mathias is reported to have built the first cabin in KY. His will was written in 1780 and recorded in Lincoln Co., KY.

General Notes for Child William Yocom

From this point back, the Yocom family does not have much firm documentation.

Clay County, Indiana History, 1880-1984, comp. by Clay County Historical Society, 1984.

"Apparently two brothers (maybe more) arrived in Clay County, Indiana. One was John Yocom born in 1747, probably in Virginia, who died in Clay County, Indiana in 1839 at the home of Samuel Reffert. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War from August County, Virginia, serving with George Rogers Clark in the Northwest. He presumably lived in Montgomery County, Kentucky until 1833, when he moved to Clay County and lived in the area of the old county seat, Bowling Green. His wife's given name was Mary, and while there is no proof, some believe that she was a Downing. He was the son of Matthias Yocom and his wife, Eleanor See, and he was the father of eleven children, some of which [sic] moved to Clay County. His brother, William who was born in 1750, married and had children. His wife's name is unknown, and some claim that she, too, was a Downing. His son William, born 21 Jan 1775 in Virginia, married Sarah Stewart and raised a family in Clay county. He died 4 Nov 1840 and is buried in the Billtown Cemetery west of Brazil. .... John Yocum born 1747 Virginia. Service--enlisted May 1780 and served 6 mos. as privated [sic] in Capt. George Jackson's Company Col. Morgan's Virginia Regt. Later served 2 mos. guarding the frontier under Capt. Rowland Thomson. Proof -- Pension Record. Buried on the John Foulke Farm south of Brazil, Ind. Stone placed by the Clay County Commissioners."
