-------------------------

I am looking for information on the SHOFF family of Allegany Co. NY, possibly in Alma. I know of Henry SHOFF who married Melissa DUTTON. He was possibly b. 1854 if the mention of a Henry L. SHOFF in the 1875 Gazetteer and Business Directory of Alma is "my" Henry.

Their children are Wells, Newell, Cora,
Lillian, Nora, James, and Byron M.
Byron M. SHOFF (b. Apr 1869 possibly in Alma, d. 28 June 1939 in Perry,
Wyoming Co., NY) married Sarah Geraldine TORREY. They had:
Edgar Henry SHOFF, b. 27 Nov 1982, d. 14 Mar 1960; m. (1) Martha RAFFERTY,
(2) Isabell HAMMERSCHMIDE
Clara Lucille SHOFF, b. 13 July 1894, d. 19 Apr 1914
Elwin Lee SHOFF, b. 22 Feb 1897, d. 19 Mar 1897
Roy Amos SHOFF, b. 27 July 1899, d. 27 June 1982; m. Irene Marie LINGENFELTER
Hazel Inez SHOFF, b. 26 Jan 1902, d. Sept 1974; m. Laurence Reed SMITH
Myrtle Viola SHOFF, b. 1 Oct 1908, d. 22 May 1976; m. Robert CARNEY
Lyle Allen SHOFF, b. 13 Nov 1910, d. 10 Oct 1958; m. Cecelia BUCKLE
Violet Cora SHOFF, b. 15 Apr 1914, d. 25 Nov 1999; m. Philip VANTYNE.
I would like to learn whatever I can about Henry SHOFF: his parents and siblings, his wife and her parents and siblings, their children and their spouses, when Henry and Melissa died and where they are buried. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

• Diary, 1836-1839 - , Stiles, Cayuga, New York

Author: Van Tyne, Jacob S.
Title: Diary, 1836-1839.
Description: 1 v. (26 leaves) ; 19 cm.
Notes: Jacob S. Van Tyne was an itinerant house and sign painter who originally made his home until 1836 in Stiles, Cayuga County, NY (now Stiles Station of Onondaga County, NY).

This diary recounts the journey of itinerant painter Jacob S. Van Tyne from 1836-1839 as he traveled from Stiles, NY through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The book contains approximately 34 pages of diary entries which vividly describe stopping points along the way, a ledger of accounts for work performed during Van Tyne's travels, and lists of painting supplies. Also included are drafts of several letters and a couple of short poems. The item contains some reversed writing, probably done with a mirror. Of particular interest are several recipes for mixing "grounds" (primer paints) as well as detailed lists of paints and supplies including their prices and colors. The poems are interspersed with the ledger and recipe entries, making the organization and the chronological order of this manuscript rather confusing.
Moroccan leather binding with foldover flaps; loose spine; broken hinges; some ink bleeding; missing pages.

I found Samuel & Angeline Vantine Shuster in the 1880 census they were listed as Shusler so she was still alive in 1880 and the census still has her born in abt 1822 which matches the age of the 1850 census.
I did some checking on The mother of Johnston Reed.

She was Nancy Vantine. Johnston was born in 1841 so his mother would likely have been born before 1821 as people married older then. Johnston was from the Freport Area. So my conclusion is that she is one of the other missing daughters from the 1840 census. As the elder Thomas Vantine seems to only had 2 sons that married. And Hezekian does not have a daughter by that name. And From my oral hamily history that Angeline's mother was Nancy this leads me to assume that she was the oldest daughter and Thomas was like married before. Even if this Nancy Vantine was born in 1820, then Thomas was still 24 years old so that is possibile.

I'm trying to tract down more information on this family. But there are several unrelated Reed families in this area and Johnston was a Military Man serving from the early part of the Civil War through 1888. Later he lived in Blair County which is were Altoona is located. The Little Bio I found on him mentions a Brother William who served in the Civial War in the 6th PA Heavy Artillery which was a locally recruited unit I may get some good info from William's Pension. There father was David Reed. The Bio states that Nancy was deceased prior to the writing of the Bio.

I found a David Reed born about 1815 in PA living in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, PA in the 1880 census he was widowed and had a son David born about 1850 in PA in his household and a widowed daughter Mary McWinney born abt 1844 along with her 3 children Margaret Abt 1866, Alfaretta abt 1869 and Nancy abt 1862. Notice the name Nancy for the oldest daughter of Mary.
I think its highly linkly that this is the family of Nancy Vantine Reed

Brandon T. Wiegand
......
I orgot to mention that the David Reed I found in Allegheny Township lived 6 houses away from Thomas Vantine (1796-?)

......
I was right The David I found in the 1880 cenus is on the 1850 census with a wife named Nancy and sons Johnston, William, David, and a daughter Mary. IAW 1850 census Nancy was born abut 1820 in PA. William Reed the son was born about 1846 in Pa.
