Biography from History of Clay Co., Indiana, Vol. II,
au: William Travis, publ. 1909
BERT YOCOM, superintendent of the Brazil office of the Prudential Insurance Company, is well known in Clay county, being one of its intel ligent as well as one of its representative citizens. He was born in Staunton, this county, in 1874. His father, William F. Yocom, was born in Dick Johnson township, Clay county, September 14, 1847, and was a representative of one of the old pioneer families of this part of the state, being the fourth in order of birth in a family of ten children, whose father, Isom Yocom, came to Clay county from Kentucky in 1832 \emdash the year in which the Black Hawk war occurred.
Every evidence of pioneer life here existed. The forest trees stood in their primeval strength and the prairies were covered with their native grasses. Only here and there had a little cabin been built, showing that the seeds of civilization were being planted in this part of the state.
The grandfather bore an active and helpful part in the general agricultural development of the community and was identified with various events which left their impress upon the pioneer history.
His son, William F. Yocom, was here reared amid the wild scenes and environments of frontier life. He began teaching school when eighteen years of age and followed that profession for fifteen years or more. His early educational privileges were limited to the opportunities offered by the common schools, but being ambitious and persevering he gained by hard study and close application an education much in advance of the majority of the people of the day.
Determining to devote his energies to lines of life demanding intellectuality and close application he took up the study of law and in 1874 was admit- ted to the bar. He then practiced at Staunton until 1890, when he came to Brazil and was appointed Deputy County Auditor, and served until his death, July 15, 1892. He served as deputy sheriff of the county from 1875 until 1877, under J. B. Yocom, his uncle, and while he was filling that position the county records were removed from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Mr. Yocom assisting in this task. He was a member of Staunton lodge, A. F. and A. M., and acted as its master. His political allegiance was given to the Democracy and in citizenship be was progressive and helpful. He married Miss Mary J. Reeder, who was born on the present site of Center Point, Clay county, Indiana, March 19, 1853. The wedding was celebrated March 19, 1874\emdash the twenty-first anniversary of the bride's birth. Mrs. Yocom is still living and by her marriage she became the mother of eight children, seven of whom sur- vive: Bert, Harvey C., Ross D., Bessie 0., William F., Jr., Eugene F. and Nellie M.
Bert Yocom pursued his education in the graded schools of Staunton and at the age of sixteen years began teaching school. After following that profession for two years he entered the employ of the Baldwin Music Company, with which he continued for six years. He next engaged with the Brazil Steam Laundry and after two years spent in that way in 1901 he became connected with the Prudential Insurance Company as an agent. On the 9th of April, 1902, he became local superintendent of the Brazil office and has since acted in this capacity, being one of the best known insurance men of his district. On the 16th of September, 1906, Mr. Yocom was married to Miss Catherine Stewart, who was born near Morgan's Crossing, June 9, 1882, a daughter of James and Anna (Wimsey) Stewart.
Her father was a native of Newburg, Kentucky, and her mother of Brazil, Indiana. Both are still living and Mr. Stewart is a coal miner. His political endorse- ment at the polls is given to the Democracy. Unto him and his wife were born seven children, namely: Mrs. Yocom, Della, Peter, Frank, Margaret, Paul and Helen.
Unto Mr. and Mrs. Yocom has been born one son, William Francis. Mr. Yocom is a member of the Brazil Concert Band, with which be has been identified for thirteen years. He has always been a lover of music and finds great pleasure in his association with the band. His political allegiance is given to the Democracy, but the honors and emoluments of office have had no attraction for him, as be has always preferred to give his undivided attention to his business duties and interests.

Do you happen to have anything to clarify the relationship between the Yocum and Stewart families who were living near Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co, KY around 1800 and then moved to the area near Brazil, Clay Co, IN about 1833?
William A. Stewart (b. ?, d. c. 1842 Clark Co, IL) married the widow Eliza B. (Yocum) Smith, d/o Jacob Yocum and Nancy Keeton, (b. 11 Nov 1804 Montgomery Co, KY, d. 10 Aug 1884 Fulton Co, IL). [William Stewart and Eliza B. Yocum are my ancestors, so I am particularly interested in finding William's ancestors. I already have a fair amount on the Yocum clan.] Several generous people have been able to send me some clues which have led to the compilation of the following information:
Eliza's first husband, George Washington Smith, died of cholera in July 1833, probably near Mt. Sterling, Montgomery Co, KY. Their children were:
William Ashley Smith, (b. 1831-died 1862 Vicksburg, MS, buried Vicksburg, MS);
Benjamin F. Smith, (b. 15 Jan 1833-d. 23 Dec 1912 New Philadelphia, IL)
Apparently shortly after or during the 1833 cholera epidemic in Montgomery Co, KY a bunch of the Yocum & Stewart families moved from Montgomery Co, KY to Clay Co, IN.
Eliza B. (Yocum) Stewart probably married William Stewart sometime before 1839 when their 3 children were born near Brazil, Clay Co, IN:
Samuel A. Stewart, (b. 1 Jun 1839-d. 6 Feb 1910 New Philadelphia, IL);
Jacob Preston Stewart, (b. 3 Jun 1840-d. 15 Jun 1916 Wyaconda, MO);
Nancy Adeline Stewart, (b. 20 Jan 1842-d. 20 Dec 1915 Adair, McDonough Co, IL)-my ancestor!
William & Eliza B. Stewart and the children moved from Clay Co, IN to Clark Co, IL where William A. Stewart died in 1842. The widow and her 5 children moved back to Clay Co, IN. In 1849 she and her 5 children moved to McDonough Co, IL and then in 1853 she married widower Daniel Baughman in 1853 in Fulton Co, IL. She remained in Fulton Co, IL the rest of her life.
I ran across the 1884 Historical and Biographical for Counties of Clay and Owen, Indiana at the Denver Public Library. [They don't have much on Clay Co.] In the book it mentions Francis B. Yocum, b. 6 Dec 1807 Montgomery Co, KY, "the sixth and one living of twelve children of William and Sarah (Stewart) Yocum, the father emigrating to Clay County, Ind., in 1833..."
Sally (or Sarah) (Stewart) Yocum (25 Oct 1778-Oct 1837) is buried at Billtown Cem, Posey Twp, Clay Co, IN. William and Sarah (Stewart) Yocum had a daughter who also married a Stewart, and a son, John Stewart Yocum, who married Elizabeth Stewart.
[The same book also has a biographical sketch on Levi G. S. Stewart, b. 21 Oct 1821 in Orange Co, IN as one of 9 children of John and Sarah (Sample) Stewart. Levi married an Elizabeth Yocum of KY. Samuel M. Stewart, a brother of Levi, is also listed.]
The 1840 census for Clay Co, IN shows that Francis B. Yocum, John S. Yocum (it is difficult to read and might be "Wm"), and a William Stewart were all in Posey Twp, Clay Co, OH. James Stewart, John Stewart, Sarah Stewart, and Charles Stewart were in Lewis Twp, Clay Co, IN.
Do you happen to have anything that might help clarify the relationship between these folks? I suspect that they are all related. Sally (Sarah) Stewart/and or some of these other Stewart folk may be related to my William Stewart. (Hoping!)
Eliza B. (Yocum) Smith Stewart Baughman's father, Jacob Yocum, d. 1833 in Montgomery Co, KY from cholera. [H.C. Brown's book on the Yocum families says he died in Clay Co, IN in 1847.]
Eliza B.'s mother, Nancy (Keeton) Yocum, died in 1857 in IL (probably McDonough Co or Fulton Co, IL).
Jacob Yocum's father, John Yocum, died in 4 Sep 1839 in Clay Co, IN.
Any help locating the parents/family of William A. Stewart would be greatly appreciated! I am also looking for the place/date of the marriage of William A. Stewart and Eliza B. (Yocum) Smith.
Also, who were the ancestors/parents of Sally (Sarah) Stewart who married Francis B.

I was very pleased to get a response to my message. I am unsure how to
proceed. .My father's name was J. Marvin Van Tine(he went by Marvin) his
father was Edward ? Van Tine. He married Lillian Mae Sconce. They had two
children,( my father & a daughter Goldie ? Van Tine) I believe the births
were in Ottumwa, Iowa. Edward & Lillian later divorced, Edward moved to
Canada, remarried & had 10 or 11 children. I would like any information
you would be willing to give me. Thank you for responding to my message.
Dorothy (Van Tine) Ketelhut.

FOREST GROVE CEMETERY, part II (M-Z)
This cemetery is located on State Highway 507 between the towns of Tenino and Bucoda. The cemetery originally served only the coal-mining town of Bucoda when it was much larger than Tenino. Bucoda was also the site of the first territorial prison, and folklore has it that there may be an unmarked mass grave of prisoners dating before 1874.

• Research Note
Despite the fact that several other researchers believe that this is the same person who married Florence Wilkens and is buried in the Ortonville Cemetery, I feel enough doubt to leave it open. The dates don't match on the 1900/1910 censuses. Charles is enumerated with his brother in Washington State. These are two different people.

Luta Faye Vantine, my grandaunt, died as Luta Faye Bowler 2/9/1951 in Arcadia, Los Angeles Co. See CA Death Records.Later married John Bowler. Her first husband was Glover E Stith. I see that under Edward Russel Vantine you had a note that you later deleted that mentioned Glover E Stith. When Stith and Luta were married they were quite wealthy and known socialites in LA during the 1920's. They owned the B&M Cafeteria (Better and More). Some of the monogrammed eating utensils are still in the family.She divorced him because he had a lover. No children.

Carol,
I got a surprise when I received Luta Vantine and Glover Stith's wedding license and application. Luta's middle name was Frances and not Faye. They were married December 18, 1906 in Bradley, Kankakee Co., IL.
