Deceased Name: Samuel G. Van Nest, active in community
HILLSBOROUGH -- Samuel G. Van Nest, 68, died Monday (Aug. 6, 2007) at Merwick Rehab Hospital and Nursing Care in Princeton.

Mr. Van Nest served in the U.S. Air Force for two years stateside and then spent two years in Japan. Sam and his wife were married in March 1962. He lived in Somerville and attended Somerville grammar school and Somerville High School.

He worked at Thompson Electric Motor for years. Mr. Van Nest had served on the Somerville town council and was appointed as Somerville's police and fire commissioner.

Moving to Hillsborough in 1976, he was a co-owner of Amwell Ace Hardware Store for 23 years. He served on the Hillsborough Board of Adjustment; as chairman of the Planning Board; and was appointed to the Board of Health. He also was a member of the Rotary Club of Belle Mead.

Son of the late Grier and Sarah Bowers Van Nest; he is survived by his wife, Beth Zugermayer Van Nest; two sons, Peter Van Nest of Manville and Donald Van Nest of Hillsborough; and his grandson, Alex Van Nest.

Graveside services will be private at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Route 206, Hillsborough.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, Center for Endovascular Research, 1111 Amsterdam Ave., New York City, NY 10025.
