Hariot Van Tine
Hariot Van Tine passed away in her sleep in the early morning of Saturday, July 7, 2007. Hariot was born in, what was then, rural Long Island, N.Y., in 1926.
Hariot had two sons, Jeff, who lives in Helena, and Kirk, who lives in northeast Virginia. Hariot had a full life as a single mom, gardener, international folk dancer, drama and English teacher, and volunteer.
As a Peace Corps volunteer in her 50s, she taught English and folk dances in Thailand, Gabon and Cameroon.
After retirement in 1991, Hariot moved to Helena and began volunteering full time. Hariot volunteered for the Montana Historical Society, the Lewis and Clark library and the Nature Conservancy of Montana. During the summers, she worked part time for Valley Farms and tended her own gardens.
Hariot was an actress and a director. As a director, she had great success with both high school students and adults in one-act play competitions.
Hariot's favorite "Hagar the Horrible" cartoon strip shows Hagar standing in a battlefield full of flowers asking "How can we fight a war when there are flowers?"
The family would like to give a very big thank you, to everyone who helped her through life in Montana including Nancy Aagenes, Mark Kreisberg, Jo and Leroy Gibson, Ellen Vogelsang and Donna Wallace.
Anyone who would like to see pictures of Hariot throughout her life can go to www.jeffvantine.com\\hariot.
A memorial service will be held Monday, July 30, at 4 p.m., at Wapiti Lane, south of Montana City. Attendees are encouraged to bring food, stories and picture, please call for directions.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Lewis and Clark Library, the Nature Conservancy of Montana or plant something you and others can enjoy for years to come.

VAN TINE, Harold C. "Hal"
(Age 77)
Of Clarkston, WA passed away of respiratory failure at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, WA on July 13, 2008. Hal was born on June 18, 1931 in Elberton, WA to John C. and Pearl Mae (Curtis) Van Tine. Hal attended school in Colfax until his junior year in high school when the family moved to Clarkston. He graduated form Clarkston High School in 1950. In September of 1950 Hal married his high school sweetheart, Wilma M. Mundt at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Hal worked for North Idaho Ro-Tile and Potlatch Corporation while attending Lewis-Clark Normal School and Eastern Washington University in Cheney where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1961. Hal was employed by the Clarkston School District as a high school World History teacher and Physical Education instructor. He was also active with the high school Athletic Department as a coach of football, basketball, baseball and cross-country. Hal earned his Master of Science in Physical Education at Washington State University in Pullman in 1965. He continued to coach high school basketball, football, baseball and cross-country until the early 1970s. From 1974 to retirement, Hal became the Elementary Physical Education Specialist for the Clarkston School District and created fitness programs such as "It's Hip To Be Fit" ("I'm Fit") which challenged children to set and achieve fitness goals. He was lovingly referred to as the "Gentle Giant" by local media and simply "Grandpa" by the many children he taught and coached. Hal retired from the Clarkston School District in 1993, but decided to come out of retirement long enough to see some of his "grandkids" finish out their high school cross-country careers. Hal enjoyed the remainder of his retirement years working part-time with the cattle at his ranch in Gifford, ID and spending quality time with his family.
Hal was formerly a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lewiston and then in 1973 he became an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Clarkston. He was also a member of Lewis-Clark Moose Lodge #751 and served as their Governor. He was a life member of Lewiston Elks Lodge #896 and he belonged to the Washington Cattlemen's Association as well as the Asotin County Fair Board.
Hal is survived by his wife Wilma of Clarkston; two sons, Kevin Van Tine of Clarkston and Kerby and his wife Linda Van Tine of Clarkston; grandsonJeremiah and his wife Kari Van Tine of Clarkston; granddaughter Danika Van Tine of Spokane; step-granddaughter Michele Katzenberger of Clarkston; great-grandsons Mason and Xander Van Tine both of Clarkston; sisters Bernadine Ward of Woodburn, OR and Patricia Johnson of Clarkston. He is also survived by one aunt, Eleanor Moore of Spokane, WA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Hal was preceded in death by his parents John and Pearl Van Tine and brothers Robert Van Tine and Norman Van Tine.
The Van Tine Family wants to express sincere appreciation to Harold's heart surgeon, Dr. William Coleman and lung internist Dr. Dan Coulston and his ICU medical staff at Deaconess Hospital for their quality care, compassion and professionalism.
Hal's family invites all family, friends, former students and athletes to celebrate his life at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Clarkston on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 2:00 PM with visitation and viewing to follow the service. The service will be officiated by Pastors Ole Gunderson and Jim Higgins. Memorials may be made to The Foundation Fund of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Funeral arrangements are being provided by MERCHANT FUNERAL HOME in CLARKSTON with graveside service and final interment at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. A reception will immediately follow the graveside service at Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
