Norma J. Kavanagh, 79, Colfax
Saturday, January 24, 2009
Norma Jean Kavanagh, longtime resident of Garfield and Colfax, died Jan. 9, 2009, at Whitman Hospital in Colfax. There will be no funeral services, at her request. Burial will be in the Garfield Cemetery at a later date.
Norma was born at LaCrosse, March 23, 1929, to Leonard (Heavy) and Blanche Van Tine. She went to grade school in Elberton, Wash., and later went to high school in Garfield.
She married Frank Dale Jackson Feb. 21, 1948, at Elberton in the United Brethren Church. They made their home in Elberton and later moved to Garfield. They divorced in 1977.
Norma enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker. She also enjoyed music and was an excellent piano player. She enjoyed playing at church gatherings in Elberton for several years.
She worked several places in Pullman, Moscow, Garfield and Colfax. She was the owner of the Colfax Liquor Store for several years and retired from there due to health reasons.
Norma married Bill Kavanagh July 1, 1979, at Coeur d'Alene. They lived in Garfield for a time and later moved to Colfax. They both enjoyed fishing and traveling.
She is survived by her husband of nearly 30 years, Bill; a daughter, Valarie Nelson and a son-in-law of Nine Mile Falls, Wash.; a son, Robert Jackson of Spokane; two sisters, Doris Divine of Garfield and Francene Filan of Hay, Wash.; two grandchildren, Shannon Teterua of Edmonds, Wash., and Scott Nelson of Spokane; and one great-grandchild, Sharayah Nelson of Nine Mile Falls, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Online condolences may be left at www.bruningfuneralhome.com.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Whitman Hospital Foundation or Hospital Auxiliary in Colfax.
Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is caring for the family.
