Diary, 1836-1839 - , Stiles, Cayuga, New York
Author: Van Tyne, Jacob S.
Title: Diary, 1836-1839.
Description: 1 v. (26 leaves) ; 19 cm.
Notes: Jacob S. Van Tyne was an itinerant house and sign painter who originally made his home until 1836 in Stiles, Cayuga County, NY (now Stiles Station of Onondaga County, NY).
This diary recounts the journey of itinerant painter Jacob S. Van Tyne from 1836-1839 as he traveled from Stiles, NY through Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The book contains approximately 34 pages of diary entries which vividly describe stopping points along the way, a ledger of accounts for work performed during Van Tyne's travels, and lists of painting supplies. Also included are drafts of several letters and a couple of short poems. The item contains some reversed writing, probably done with a mirror. Of particular interest are several recipes for mixing "grounds" (primer paints) as well as detailed lists of paints and supplies including their prices and colors. The poems are interspersed with the ledger and recipe entries, making the organization and the chronological order of this manuscript rather confusing.
Moroccan leather binding with foldover flaps; loose spine; broken hinges; some ink bleeding; missing pages.

Carol Yokum,
Being very new to the internet, my first try was the Bangham name.
It was there I spotted your name along with the name of Thomas Bangham and Mary ? Thomas and Mary Casterline Bangham are my great great grandparents.
My mother was a Bangham, and at present I am trying to do her genealogy, but am somewhat stuck beyond Thomas and Mary, though I do have information on some of their children.
I have no idea where either of them are buried though we have been in the general area of where they lived, but not been able to pick up much info.
One of their sons, John, is my great grandfather, and I know that a Joseph is brother to my grandfather as I have his death certificate. This names Thomas and Mary as the parents of Joseph.
I do know there were other children as I have an old penciled paper which stated Bill, and I think it was Ben, went west. I have wondered if the William Bangham of Ohio is also a brother, but have never followed it as of now.
If you are interested in comparing family data, I would like to hear from you. This is only my third e-mail, so hope it is Ok. Penny Bonnema

The following bit of history (and the cite) was forwarded to me yesterday.
The location of 'this Indian warfare' is supposed to be Sussex Co., NJ.
Can anyone provide any additional information? Who was Vantine and
especially who was 'the lad called Titsort?'
> .... the General Assembly on August 12, 1758, cited John Vantine and a
> lad called Titsort, and nine others who accompanied them, for bravery in
> this Indian warfare. The men were given $10 each, the lad $30 and

The number of Johns involved in these two generations continually causes confusion. Frank Doherty creates this possible scenario for a third wife. Still, none of this is proven. There are always those blasted Connecticut Fontines running around and the Anthony Fountain family of Staten Island. The possible misspelling of Van Tien and Valentines as Vantine could be an explanation.
So far, it's educated guesswork.

Child: (by third wife Maria Lem) x. Johannes, b. 5 June, bp. 7 June 1730 at Quassic-Kill (Newburgh, Orange Co., NY) with Sp. Abraham Fontyn and Annatje Lem. The church record notes: "Johannes, son of Hannes Fontyn, who was then deceased, and widow Maria."665 He may be the man who married Maria LaFevre and went to NYC where she was recorded as a member of the New York Reformed Dutch Church in NYC 25 Aug. 1766. Johannes Vantine was recorded as a member 23 Nov. 1769.666 A John Van Tine reported in 1768 that his wife Mary had run away.667 Maria LaFevre died before 1785 when Johannes Fountain, widower of Maria LeFevre, residing in Nistigione, married Maria McMicken, widow of Ebenezer McMicken, living in Schenectady. They married at SchenRCh. 20 Feb. 1785. Ebenezer Mc Mikle (sic) was listed on the 1779 tax roll for Schenectady, Albany Co., NY with no real property and personal property worth £20. He paid a tax of £2/8/4. John Vantine was not on the list and was not in the NYS 1790 census under any of the usual spellings. Research Note, 1692 - , Bushwick, Kings, New York

More information on Cornelis Vonck and Magdalena Hendrics daughter Ida. This Ida Vonck was the daughter mention in what I had sent in prior. She was listed as 4 years old in 1681. Also at the bottom I included a baptism for their daughter Magdalena.
Somerset County Historical Quarterly Vol V, pages 286: CHILDREN OF REYNIER ARENTSEN AND JANNETIE AUKES VAN NUYSE: 5. AUKE REYNIERSEN; m. Ida Vonk (dau. of Cornelius Vonk and Madeleine Hendricks), who was b. Apr. 17, 1677, and bapt. at Flatbush. He took the oath of allegiance at Flatbush in 1687, as a native; bought land in Bushwick in 1692 of Johannes Fonteyn, and also, Oct. 20, 1700, his father's farm, with its appendages and salt meadows, located at "Keuters-hoek," in Flatbush, for Ε"425; name on assessment rolls of Bushwick of 1693 and census of 1698. He was generally known as Auke Reyniersen, but sometimes the surname "Van Hengel" or "Van Engele" is recorded. Some of his children used "Reyniersen" and others "Van Hengel" or variants thereof as surnames. (For ch., see infra).
Baptism recorded dated 23 October 1698 for Magdalena. Page 454, Flatbush Church Records, by David Voorhees: Witnesses were Achias Van dyck and Magdalena Van Dyck (Ida's mother and step father). Tax List, Feb 1724/25 - , , Dutchess, New York

P: Sara, wife of young Hannes Fontaijne, who is also unbaptized, though I didn't know it." Here is the key for most of my reconstruction of the Johannes Fonteyn family. NYGBS Record July 1966, p. 169, Lutheran Church Baptisms, NYC.

1 Jul 1741 Dorothea, baptized in the Fishkill DRC, as the child of Isaac Fonteyn and Angeniet Fonteyn, which is a mistake in the register. I assume Willem Lem to be dead. Wit: Dorothea Lent (and should also include Isaac Fonteyn).
