CHILLICOTHE - Charles L. "Buck" Van Tine, 73, of Chillicothe died at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at Manor Court in Peoria.

He was born on Dec. 14, 1934, in Quincy, the son of Arthur C. and Dorothy C. (Robinson) Van Tine. He married Sandra Irene Johnson on Sept. 15, 1956, in Rock Island, Ill.

Surviving are his wife of Chillicothe; one son, Mark (Trish) Van Tine of Parker, Colo.; one daughter, Susan (Joe) Pierucci of West Bloomfield, Mich.; and four grandchildren, Megan, Molly and Richard Van Tine and Jessica Pierucci.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Buck attended schools in Burlington, Iowa, Des Moines, Iowa, and Rock Island, Ill., where he graduated in 1952. In 1957, he graduated from Iowa State College with a Bachelor's of Science degree in civil engineering. He was in the Army Reserves, retiring with the rank of captain. Buck worked for 35 years at Caterpillar Inc. in various plant engineering positions, retiring in 1991 as plant engineer manager of the Mossville Engine Plant.

He was the charter president of the American Institute of Plant Engineers (AIPE) in 1968 in Peoria and named Plant Engineer of the Year by the San Francisco, Calif., chapter in 1974. Buck was also the Chapter President of AIPE in 1976. He held various national offices in AIPE and was national president in 1988 and elected as fellow in 1989. After retirement, he performed volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity, Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child and Northwoods Community Church in Peoria.

He was also a member of Community Bible Study Group of Peoria, Pekin Bottle Collectors Association and was a member and greeter of Northwoods Community Church. Buck also served as executive director for the International Society of Inkwell Collectors since 2002.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Northwoods Community Church in Peoria; or Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607; or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
