Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society has a number of Sedgwick County, KS marriage affidavits in their library. (Some of the affidavits from the 1870's and 1880's are missing from the files even though the names appear in the index). MHGS has copies of the marriage returns for 1882 and 1883, then 1885 through April 1913. These contain the same information as the affidavits along with when the marriage was performed and by whom.

Here you can access a marriage index covering Books A through Z, 9 May, 1870 to 24 May 1922. If you would like a copy of any affidavit we have, please send a SASE along with $3.00 for each affidavit to: MHGS, P. O. Box 1121, Wichita, KS 67201-1121. You must include the names of the bride and groom, the date, Book and page number or our committee will be unable to fulfill your request.

If there is no date in the date column there was no return made to Probate Court that the marriage was performed. From April 1, 1915 to May 28, 1917 (R405 through T386) no marriages were recorded in Sedgwick County, only that application was made for a license. These must be obtained from Vital Statistics in Topeka.

From: Cinnys@aol.com

I have seen your website and postings to the Genforum and am imposing by asking for help ( that should actually have been a pleading scream). My greatgrandmother was Mary E. Vantine b. 11/16/1858 d. 8/2/1942 or Aug 7 1949. Her family came from Michigan ( at least during her birth time frame). She married Hiram Norton Ainsworth 4/17/1876 (I believe). Children Grace, Harry Hoagland, Phillip and Robert and a Theo who apparently died early. I have found her on the 1900 census, but cannot locate her on any earlier census. I do not have a clue who her family is and seeking any possible help.

I have a family document passed down that includes Mathias 1766 m. Catherine 1775, their children spouses dates etc - last entry is 1904. It includes many names I have seen queried on the forum BUT no mention of my Mary E. Vantine and no hint of any possible connection. I would be happy to copy and email/fax this 11 page document to you in appreciation for any assistance you might be able to give. Thanks for the time and consideration. I a trying to get an almost complete genealogy (at least to entrance to this country) for my sisters as a Christmas gift and MY Vantines have been a pain in the arse - tho you have done an incredible job with yours! Help me.... (sorry .....I'm whinning). Shari Ainsworth Kroner p.s. I have sent her photo also just in case there might be a family resemblance or you recognize)

Hi Shari,

I was so excited when I saw the photograph of Mary E. Vantine (your great-grandmother) on Carol Yocom’s Vantine website. I know exactly who her family was – in fact, I thought it was my line, until I proved otherwise. (I am related a few more generations back, down a different line).

I have attached a word document with details of descendants I know for three generations from Mary’s parents. Any additions or corrections you can make to my document would be fantastic!

I came across your information on the net which stated the following:
" I am researching the ancestry of Harry Hoagland Ainsworth (1885-1955)m.1906 Owasso,MI Huldah Bertha Miesen(1884-1947). Father of Harry was Hiram Norton m.(4/17/1876) Mary E.Vantine(?1858-1942). I have extensive records of the Vantine family beginning with Mathias Vantine (b.3/20/1766) m.Catharine Demoru (b.8/27/1775)."

Prior to finding this information, I only knew that Mary E. (Vantine) Ainsworth was alive in 1928 in California. I would love to know more details as to exactly when and where she died. On Carol’s site you mentioned her death date as being August 2, 1942. Do you have obituaries??

I found their marriage record in an IGI record stating the following:

Hiram N. Ainsworth, born in St. Lawrence, New York, married Mary E. Vantine on April 17, 1877 in Genesee Co. Michigan. He was 20 and she was 18.

I was surprised with the extra children you mentioned of Hiram and Mary’s. I knew they definitely had Theo who died young. He is buried in the Lakeside Cemetery in Holly, Michigan with the gravestone stating: AINSWORTH, Theo. M. 1878 – 1878.

He is actually buried near his grandfather, Nathaniel (Daniel) Vantine. Then, I only knew of Phillip and Ralph. You mentioned the children as being: Grace, Harry
Hoagland, Phillip and Robert and Theo. Do you have additional information on these children??

You mentioned you found the Ainsworth in the 1900 census – please let me know details. Any other census details you have would be appreciated too.

I checked out the 1920 census for Los Angeles and found Hulda B. (no sign of Harry). She was 35 years old and the following children were listed:

Ralph M. Son 11 B: Michigan
Elizabeth J. Daug. 6 B: California
James H. Son 3 B: California
Donald E. Son 1 4/12 B: California
Dorothy G. Daug. 1 4/12 B: California.

I just chanced upon another person researching the above family, so I will check out that lead and let you know what comes of it.

Upon further checking of the above names I found the following: (considering the middle initials match, I would say they are a strong probability of being the same people):

A few years back I met a relative on this branch of the family tree (Orin’s grandson, Lawrence Piening) and he showed me some of his photos. One photo I was thrilled he passed onto me. It is a family photo of Orin’s family. (Orin was Mary E. Vantine/Ainsworth’s brother). I’ve scanned and attached this photo for you.

Your great-grandmother looks so sweet and I think the two of them do look alike. I hope you don’t mind, but just for fun, I “put them together” in a photograph to see the similarities better side by side. (I’ve attached that photo as well).

I am also sending this email to Carol Yocom so she will have the information too.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon. This is soooooo exciting!! I’m curious as to where you live? I live in Alberta, Canada.

This census seems to indicate that Joseph Somerville was married twice. His first wife or Amanda's mother was Elizabeth Lee and his second wife might have been Elizabeth Robinson or perhaps Robinson's sister-in-law maiden name unknown. On the other hand, there may be a mistake on Amanda's Death Certificate, and this was the only marriage, but Elizabeth would have been a very young mother! There was an extensive quarrel over Joseph Somerville's estate which detailed when he died and the names of his heirs.

David Montaue, Seth Lowe and Daniel Swem were appointed make this partition, which they do and report to the court with a map of same. Feb. 1848."
