Subject: Van Tine, Van Vlack (van Vleckeren)
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 22:50:36 -0600
From: vanvlackb <vanvlackb@bellsouth.net>
To: <cyocom@earthlink.net>

I am hoping that you can help me with Van Tine genealogy. I have Mary (Polly) Van Tine in my main Van Vlack database. She married Henricus van Vleckeren (Van Vlack), born 1779, died 1812. His baptism record spells
his surname as van Vleckeren but his gravestone lists him as Henry Van Vlack. His parents were Henricus van Vleckeren (born 1747) and Maria Schut (her surname has been spelled in many various ways). I know that the parents of Mary (Polly) were Francis Van Tine and Eva Luyster.

I have another Van Vlack database that I have been trying to connect to my main one. There is a Henrick (Henry) Van Vlack (born 1817/1818) who married a Hattie/Hettie Phillips. I think that Phillips was her married name when she married Henrick (Henry) Van Vlack as her death certificate lists her maiden name as either Van Tine or Van Dyne (name difficult to read). I am wondering if you have come across a Hattie or Hettie Van Tine. I know that this Henrick (Henry) definitely fits in my main database as the great-grandson of Hendrik van Vleckeren (born 1712) as I
have bible records that state that. The bible records also mention "H. Phillips, married to Henrick Van Vlack). But, I don't know who he was the son of or grandson of - meaning I am missing two generations.

I am wondering if you have a Hattie/Hettie Van Tine in your database. She was born about 1821 in NY and died in Dutchess County, NY on May 7, 1892. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Her two sons were named Abraham and Levi. If Hattie and Henrick were following Dutch patronymics, that would mean that her father's name would have been either Abraham or Levi.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give me.

Thank you very much for responding so quickly. If it would help, I have a web site that contains the first 6 generations of my main line (descendants of Marinus Roelofse van Vleckeren) and 2 generations of Henry and Hattie's line.

My main page is: http://www.vanvlack.net

The link for my main Van Vlack line says: Descendants of Marinus Roelofse van Vleckeren. The link for Henry's separate line says: Descendants of Henry Van Vlack, born 1817

I need to update both lines on my web site as I have found much more information in census records about Marinus' descendants. I have also figured out (because of census records) that the approximate date of birth of Hattie (Hettie) Phillips Van Vlack shown on my web site is not correct and that is based on what had to be an incorrect reading of her age at death written on her gravestone (and published in the book "Old Gravestones in Dutchess County, NY"). I can send you the 1860 census page (in .pdf format) showing Hendrick/Henry (he is listed as Hendrick VanBlack in the census) and Hattie and their children if you would like to see it.

Let me know what you information you would like for me to send you when you have some free time.

Have a great day and again, thank you again for responding.

Good morning:

Thank you VERY much for all of your work.

I don't have Hattie's death certificate but I plan on ordering it. I obtained the information about maiden name on Hattie's death certificate from Walter Van Vlack. He was heavily into Van Vlack genealogy during the 1980s. I started working on genealogy in 1994 and met Walter early in 1995 - a few months before he died. Walter gave me a printed version of everything he had found (it was in a very old MS Word format and not in gedcom format) and asked me to step into his shoes and continue the research (he was about 84 at that time). He had Henry and Hattie's information in a separate listing as he wasn't able to tie them into our main van Vleckeren (Van Vlack) line. It was Walter's file that contained the note about Hattie's maiden name showing as Van Tine or Van Dyne on her death certificate. I didn't get much further with Hattie and Henry's line until I got the bible record information and that was a very short time ago (actually, less than a week before I contacted you).

I will try to get a death certificate for Henry (not sure that there will be one for him tho' since he died in 1879) and his sons. The age shown for "Hetty VanTine" would fit the estimated year of birth I have for her (about 1821) and I based that estimate on the 1860 census.

When I saw what was published as being in the bible record, I realized that although Hattie's husband Henry is definitely somehow a descendant that fits into my main line (but I have no idea where) since his surname was Van Vlack, Hattie is also definitely a van Vleckeren descendant. I am attaching scanned version of the bible record so you can see what I am talking about. Under the listing for "Marinus van Vlackran...", there is a line that refers to "Cornelia Lewis great grandmother of H. Phillips (married to Henrick Van Vlack)". Cornelia Lewis was married to Henrick Van Vlack (born as Henrick van Vleckeren) and they were my great x 6 grandparents.

Thank you very much for sending the census page. As I mentioned, I found Hattie, Henry and their children in the 1860 census but I wasn't able to find Hattie and Henry in the 1870 census (Henry would have still been alive then). Did you find them by looking for Van Vlack or some other spelling? I have searched online through the 1870 census - all variations of how the name could possibly have been spelled and I didn't find anything and I know they should be listed somewhere with at least some of their children as their oldest child would have been 17 in 1870. I don't have access to the 1880 census so am not able to look for Hattie in that and I know that she was alive at that time. I found their son Levi and son Abraham in the 1900 census. Do you have the 1870 and 1880 census pages that list Hattie? If so, would you be willing to send them to me?

A distant Van Vlack relative of mine is heavily into Woodhull genealogy. I am going to forward your email to her to see if she can be of help since Hetty VanTine is listed as living with a Woodhull family in 1850.

Am curious as to whether or not you have found a Chloe Valentine (name possibly was Van Tine in earlier generations). It isn't important other than I am curious about her. She is listed on a gravestone (and I have a photo of the gravestone somewhere around here) with a Van Vleck family in a cemetery in Herkimer County, NY. She may be another Van Tine link to the van Vleckeren line. There are 3 distinctly separate Van Vleck lines. One line is the descendants of Tielman van Vleeck and all of his descendants used the surname Van Vleck. One line is the descendants of Benjamin Van Vleck and all of his descendants used the surname Van Vleck. Last, but not least are the descendants of Marinus Roelofse van Vleckeren. Most of his descendants use the surname Van Vlack but a few use Van Vleck. In Marinus' line, I have even found situations in which one family member used Van Vlack as an adult and a sibling used Van Vleck. The three separate lines (Tielman, Benjamin, and Marinus) are not related. I have been researching since 1994, Walter researched prior to that and Jane Van Vleck (descendant of Tielman) researched from the late 1800s to the mid 1950s (she published a book in 1955) and no one has found a tie between the three lines.

I am going to write Kris now (she is the Woodhull and Van Vlack descendant) and will let you know if she recognizes the Isaac Woodhull family).

Again, thank you very much for your help. Have a great day.
Barbara

Dear Carol, ....

I have written to you before about my g-grandfather, H.O. Vantine from Vandergrift PA. My grandmother was Marion Pearle Vantine. I was going to send you some information and pictures, but my computer crashed in April and my husband had to have colon surgery, however all is getting better now and I will soon have the pictures of Hezekiah, his children (all but 2) and wife Nancy Jane Werts.

I must commend you for all the work that you have done. I started in 1964 doing genealogy, but had to delay most of my research until the children were grown. Now things are getting better and I can devote more time to it. There just isn't enough time. I am so grateful for the computer and internet - I have found so much and met so many nice people.

Talk to you later. Good luck on ebay!!!
