I have an ancestor, Andrew V. Ammerman, who we believe to have come to Michigan from New Jersey, but we have very little information on him. His father was also named Andrew and his mother (Hannah?). He was born c. 1818. Perhaps there is a connection here?

It's obvious some major problem occurs with this family before 1900. James is living with his mother with two boys and Cora is living in Toledo with the daughter. She doesn't show any indication of the son which I find completely odd. Maybe there is another wife in this family or I've picked up the wrong Cora as wife to James.

This census is very confused. Either Almira is living with him and is ennumerated as wife, or he has a wife and the information is Almira's. It's possible that Almira moved between children and she was ennumerated twice.
