Maybe some of you very helpful people can assist me with this. I am trying
to prove that John Amerman (Ammerman) who was born 23 Dec 1813 in
Pennsylvania and died 5 Apr 1872 in Huron was the son of Simom Amerman who
was born in 1774 and died 12 Mar 1860. Both are buried in the HESTER
CEMETERY, BRONSON TOWNSHIP.

In the history of Bronson Twp on this website the writer states that one of
the early settlers was Simon in 1816 and that there were several Amerman
children in the first school, one of them named John.

My assumtion is that John is Simon's son but I have no proof. The history of
Bronson Twp on this website does not indicate where the information came
from. Any suggestions or help from anyone on this from anyone would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dale Fritchen >>

Hi Dale,

The references to Simon and John AMMERMAN in Bronson Township came from the
History of the Fire Lands, by W. W. Williams, 1879. I re-checked this book
and found no direct references to John as the son of Simon.

However, Cemetery Inscription, 1870 Census Index, marriage, and IGI
references all seem to fit together to strongly suggest that John is the son
of Simon. I may be re-plowing a plowed field, but here is what I found:

1.Huron County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, by HCC/OGS, 1997.

Hester Cemetery, Bronson Township.

Page 17, Row 12.
18 John AMMERMAN d. 5 Apr 1872 age 56y.
19 James AMMERMAN s/o J. & M. AMMERMAN, d. 12 Apr 1851 7y 1m 25d.

And near by, same Row 12:

35 Simon AMERMAN d. 12 Mar 1860 age ___y 4m 5d (bur. rec. says 12 Mar 1861
age 85y).
Anna AMERMAN w/o Simon AMERMAN d. 7 Feb !851 age 71y 10m 20d (age 74 per burial record).

2. Huron County, Ohio Marriages, 1815-1900, by Scheuer Publications, 1992.

John M. AMMERMAN m. Melissa HULL 5 Mar 1837.

3. 1870 Census Index, Huron County, Ohio.

All AMMERMANS below were listed for census page 248A, Bronson Township.

Read first name and place of birth.

John, NY.
Lewis, OH.
Mark, OH.
Mellissa, NY.

Noting this John AMMERMAN was listed as born in NY, I went to the online IGI
site (www.familysearch.com), set the search criteria for "United States" and
"New York," plugged in the name John AMMERMAN, and found:

Name: John Montfort AMERMAN.
Birth: 23 Dec 1813. Reformed Dutch Church at the Awasco Outlet, Fleming, Cayuga, New York.
Father: Simon AMERMAN.
Mother: Ann VAN TYNE.

While I could not find a Simon AMERMAN in New York, opening the search to all
states brought up:

Name: Simon AMERMAN
Christening: Dec 1774.
Birth: Conewago Dutch Reformed Church, Straban Twp, Adams, Pennsylvania.
Father: Hendreck AMMERMAN.
Mother: Jannettie Van ARSDALEN.

Note: the IGI birth years above for John and Simon (1813 and 1774
respectively) are not that far off from the approximate birth years suggested
in the Cemetery Inscriptions (1816 and 1776 respectively). The theme of the
Dutch Reformed Church appears in both IGI cases for John and Simon, even
though their birthplaces are in different states. Also, the middle initial
"M" for John M. AMMERMAN in the marriage record, agrees with the middle name
"Montfort" in the IGI record for John Montfort AMERMAN. Finally, the first
name of the IGI mother of John ("Ann"), corresponds well with the first name
of the mother in the cemetery inscription ("Anna").

Regards,

Ken Shute, in MD (kwsroots@aol.com).

• WARNING

Cemetery Burial Records say age 74 at death
if died in 1851, at 71 10 20, then born 18 Mary 1779

if died in 1851, age 74, then born 1777

Both are after the christening date.

DAR Records previous cited, p. 236 "Cornelius Van Tine b. Dec. 25, 1747. He was a very quiet man, kind hearted and much loved so my grandmother (Frances Phillips) said. He lived to be about 84 and is buried in the old Newlin yard at Tioronda (sic). According to N. Y. State Archives Vol. I Cornelius served in the Militia in 1778, 2nd Reg. Dutchess Co. in Col. Dirck Brinckerhoff's Co. Capt. Isaac Van Wyck. Poor health prevented him from serving with his brothers, John, Isaac, Francis and Robert in the Continental Army. The soldiers came for him in the night, made him get up and dress and marched him to a place near Peekskill, where he was confined for a short time, then released on account of his health. During the war at the least sign of alarm people flocked to the mountains for safety. In the winter of 1779 and 80 there was great destitution in the army and it grew so cold for the soldiers encamped in the mountains that they were lodged among the different families living near by. Cornelius and his wife had four soldiers to keep that winter. Their daughter Betsey was a babe at that time and the soldiers made a great pet of her. Cornelius Van Tine married Nellie Ames, who lived to be 72. Both buried in the Newlin burying ground at Tioronda (sic)."

Old Graveyards of Dutchess County gives the information that there is an old yard at "Tioronda" which was read about 1908, only 8 stones still standing the rest vandalized or stolen. We are out of luck for finding stones for Cornelius and Nellie!

General Notes (Wife)

>Birth note: I had Charles Kipp married to Elizabeth the daughter of James and Content Warner Vantine. This is wrong. I have who he
married in my newer notes, but Elizabeth married Isaac Buzzell.

7/15/99 - Well, Elizabeth didn't marry Isaac Buzzell - she married Andrew Ammerman. Back to square one with that Elizabeth!!!

I have an ancestor, Andrew V. Ammerman, who we believe to have come to Michigan from New Jersey, but we have very little information on him. His father was also named Andrew and his mother (Hannah?). He was born c. 1818. Perhaps there is a connection here?

Hello Carol. I quite unexpectedly came upon your website a couple days
before our Vantine Family Reunion in June 2007. I am the granddaughter
of Lulu Vantine. She was the daughter of Albert H. Van tine Sr. and
Sarah Margaret Benson (page 26 of 29 on his Family Group Sheets). I was
quite surprised to see that our ancestor's traced back to France as we
have always been told we are Dutch. When I told my mom what I found and
thought that maybe it was wrong, she said that she remembers my
grandmother saying that we had some French in us. I haven't had a
chance to do a lot of research and I am still trying to see where the
Dutch fits in or if we are Dutch at all. But, I do have some
information which I can update for you after my grandmother. The
updated information of an alternate birth on your website from Linda B.
is incorrect. My grandmother was born on March 7, 1902. I will send more updates as I learn more. Thank you!

Luanne Rasmussen
