From Lockheed Newsletter, June 2004:
The Aeronautics Star is printed for readers like John Yocom, perhaps better known at Site 2 as John FOD. John joined Lockheed in 1970 and since then has worked on the L-1011, F-117, A-4 and P-3, and subsequently transferred to the U-2 program where he first worked as a mechanic and then became a crew chief in production flight and flight test. Following his recovery from serious accident in January 2001, he returned to Site 2 as the Tool Control FOD Coordinator to oversee FOD control on the U-2 program.
"FOD is a very serious issue. In our business, it's one of the most critical things we have to think about on a daily basis. It boils down to eliminating risk to the lives of men and women - it's a feeling I can't describe other than 'gut wrenching'. To eliminate FOD is everyone's duty - to accept responsibility to constantly step up the standard to ensure we stop FOD. Our customers deserve nothing less. It's a reputation we need to uphold, and it's critical to the company's bottom line."
Known for his vigilance on FOD awareness and prevention, John's co-workers convinced him to have his badge name changed to read JOHN FOD. Site 2 can boast more than 15 FOD-free years. Incidentally - John is not related to Mammy (Pansy) and Pappy (Lucifer) Yokum, the staple characters in Al Capp's popular Li'l Abner comic strip from the early '40s.
• Retired, 2005 - , Palmdale, Los Angeles, California
• Obituary, Antelope Valley Press, 24 Aug 2006 - , Lancaster, Los Angeles, California
YOCOM, John C., born April 8, 1947, in Indiana, passed away August 20, 2006, at Antelope Valley Hospital, Lancaster. He was a resident of Lancaster. After serving in the USAF, John began a 35 year career at Lockheed as a Sr. Trimmer on the L1011 in 1970. He progressed to Flight Line Mechanic, Production Supervisor, Project Manager, Flight Crew Chief and FOD Control Coordinator. He worked on various aircraft, including the U-2, F117, SR-71, A4 and P-3. He then retired from Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in September 2005. Besides planes, John's passions included antique cars, hot rods and stained glass. Survived by his son James Yocom, daughter Melissa Yocom and sister Sandra Marker. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 26, 2006, at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary, 808 E. Lancaster Blvd., Lancaster. The family would appreciate donations in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society or the Disabled American Veterans.

Medical Notes (Husband)
On January 6, 2001, John fell and hit his head at work at Lockheed. He underwent surgery that night and was not expected to live. On January 30, 2001, his sister and James and Melissa authorized the hospital to pull the plug. To everyone's astonishment, he lived although it required months of rehabilitation to regain his abilities. He recovered to about 80%.
On August 18, 2006, John fell at the grocery store and hit his head again. There was internal bleeding on his brain and the right frontal lobe was completely destroyed. This time they didn't operate. He had a DNR on file and he found peace on August 20th. The funeral was held on Saturday, August 26. He was cremated.

Pete Townshend song "The Sea Refuses No River".
I remember being richer than a king
The minutes of the day were golden
I recall that when the joint passed around
My body felt a little colder
But now I'm like a sewer channel - running lime and scag
Let me get at the master panel - let me at my stack
The sea refuses no river
And right now this river's banks are blown
The sea refuses no river
Whether stinking and rank
Or red from the tank
Whether pure as a spring
There's no damn thing stops the poem
The sea refuses no river
And this river is homeward flowing
I have seen a trace of strain
In other's eyes, not spoken.
I must admit that I enjoyed their pain
But this time it's me that's broken
I demand for you and His
This must be the time
When we decide what freedom is
Turn water into wine
For the sea refuses no river
We're polluted now but in our hearts still clean
The sea refuses no river
We tried not to age
But time had it's rage
We're washed over the stones
From babies into clones of the mean
The sea won't refuse this muddy river
Nor deny the sulphurous stream
There was a fool in a dressing robe
Riding out the twilight hour
Lonely and cold in an empty home
Trying to assess his power
But now he's like a stream in flood
Swollen by the storm
He doesn't care if he sheds his blood
Let him be reborn
For the sea refuses no river
Remember that when the beggar buys a round
The sea refuses no river
And rain fills the gutters
No time for stutters
This is our chance
To sing and dance and to clown
The sea refuses no river
And rivers were sprung to drown
The sea refuses no river
No pecking code respected for the damned
The sea refuses no river
Whether starving and ill
Or strung on some pill
Just 'cos you own the land
There's no unique hand plugs the dam
The sea refuses no river
And the river is where I am
The river is where I am
