Query 6 Mar 2001
Vantine, Yeomone

Hi. I am attempting to validate this ancestor, she would be my mother's grandmother. I have no idea how accurate my records are. Although my records are published, the documentation is unreferenced. Giving that, my records indicate she was born 16 MAR1870 in NYC and died 22 JUL1915 in Hawley, PA. Her parents are listed as Isaac Vantine and Emaline Yeomone (DOB and DOD unknown for each). I do know Elizabeth married a John H. Anderson and they lived in Port Jervis, NY region. Most curious, I also find on your website an entry(http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cyocom/vantine/f114.htm#f426) for Isaac Way Van Tine & Emeline Amanda Yeomans. Boy, that is close to what I have. However there is no Elizabeth Hannah in this couple's child list. Elizabeth's birthdate does squeeze in nicely after the marriage date and the documented first "Child" Van Tine. Hannah is the given name of Isaac's mother, and Elizabeth's middle name. Add that to the fact that my mother recalls her mother refering to a Lizzie and Renssalaer among family members. Lizzie and Renssalaer would be Elizabeth's siblings. Given your experience, do you think this is enough 'circumstantial' evidence to consider Elizabeth Hannah as part of the Issac Way Van Tine & Emeline Yeoman union? Also, from your NY state marriage records I find an entry for an Elisabeth Vantyne, married 21oct1891 in Port Jervis (#18667). Same person? What is the best way to obtain the other information from that doc, such as, spouse name, marriage date and place? Gary in NJ

Dear Carol Yocom,

Your webpage is incredible. Your generosity is overwhelming to share your family info and sources.

I am researching the life of a relative of mine who was captured in 1790 Kentucky, and held by the Potawatomi of St. Joseph, being released after the Treaty of Greenville in 1795 and she returned to her family in Kentucky. Her birth name was Sara Cozine, a little Dutch girl, age 9 when captured at Ketcham's Fort then in Jefferson Co, Kentucky. According to Draper's Papers Sarah is listed under the name Sara Parsains, age about 14, when released by the Potawatomi of St Joseph on 14 Sept 1795--perhaps she had forgotten her birth name.

One of your ancestors (he is listed on your webpage anyway) was also held captive by this same tribe.
Peter SMOCK bp: 27 Jan 1781died ca 1848 IN.
Peter and his brother John SMOCK were taken captive by Potawatomi on Brashears Creek in Kentucky in March 1794, and their brother Matthew was killed.

Peter SMOCK, age 14, captured March 1794, KY, was released on 10 June 1995, by Potawatomi of St. Joseph
Sara was not released until three months later.

Most of these released captives gave interviews and newspaper stories were written abut them. Apparently my Sara did not. Could you share a contact who might have information about any write ups on Peter or John SMOCK?

Indiana State Library "Pioneers of Jefferson Co., Indiana"

Madison Courier, 26 Jun 1874
Reminisences of John Smock of Hanover twp.--dedicated to S. T. Smock.

"During the War, General Washington sent him (the writer's ancestor-Jacob) with a company to drive the horses into the wilderness to prevent them from falling into the hands of the British. That company was called "The Cane Boys."

From New York, to Pa., to Va., then to Mercer co. Ky., settling on a creek called "Buckskin", west of Shelbyville (the Smock family) -- here they were annoyed by the Indians. I had an uncle (Matthew Smock) killed, and two uncles taken prisoners, Peter & John Smock. Father was wounded in the arm at the same time. I had a cousin tomahawked and scalped and left for dead, but he survived, got well and lived for years, his name os Issac Robins, Jefferson co. Indiana.

The same bank of Indians who scalped young Robins took my uncles prisoners, and then left for the Indian Country, across the Ohio. The alarm guns were fired, the neighbors soon collected and followed the Indians trail to the river, but the Indians had gotten across and the men had to return without rescuing the prisoners or getting a shot at the redskins. The Indians crossed just below the mouth of Clifton Creek, came up the river and camped where the Courthouse now stands. They remained three days singing and dancing and then started for their town on "Flat Rock", going up Crooked Creek to the Highlands.

Peter fared pretty well. Old Winnemac adopted him into his family, in place of a son he had lost. John fared worse, often roasted wild turkey guts or eating them raw, was his food.

Winnemacs old Squaw, with some young ones took Peter into the river to wash the "White-Blood" out of him. to make an Indian out of him. He got one of them down in the waterand was about to drown her, but the others rescued her. It pleased old Winnemac very much to see Peter out-do the squaws. The old woman would take him to hoe corn; he would't hoe worth a cent. She then made him take the papoose to take care of; he would pinch it to make it cry. It plased old Winnemac; he said Peter was no he-squaw, that he would make a good brave warrior.

They were with the Indians 18 months to 2 years. General Wayne had a Treaty with the Indians at Greenville; Grandfather took a keg of rum and went to the Treaty. He got a French-Canadian, an Indian trader, to buy the boys.

They both lived to raise families. Peter was a very strong and stout man weighing over 200 pounds; John not so large. Both lived in Marion co.

Peter kew of one or two silver mines, but he could not tell where they were. He also knew about salt, from what he told me, I think the salt water was probably in Jackson or Lawrence co., he said it was a salt spring which boilded up and ran about 20 feet, and sank again. They carried the water as much as a mile to boil it not cutting a stick, or timber, near by the sping. Before they left the country, they covered the spring carefully, to the "whites" could not find it.

Before the battle Tippecanoe there was a half-blood Indian by the name of Elliot on his way to join General Harrison, they stayed all night with Uncle Peter. He said if he lived to get back, he would take him (Uncle Peter), to the salt spring and silver mine. He never returned. I was born in Shelby co Ky., on a small stream called Fox Run, the tributary of Bull-skin, in 1800.
