a buggy accident caused by a runaway horse. The coroner's
report said: "On the 9th day of August A. D. 1902 the coroner
was notified of the death of Elizabeth York, who died at James
Tucker's ranch, 28 miles above Dewey's Flat on the Big Hole
River; and from the statements of the sons of the deceased, it
was ascertained that said deceased had been injured in a
runaway and that a Doctor was called, but did not arrive until
after death. This being all the information obtainable and
there being no possibility whatever of any foul play being
connected with said death"

General Notes (Wife)

From the Big Hole Breezes, August 15, 1902:
Last Friday morning, some time between 11 and 12
o'clock, Mrs. Elizabeth York was dragged to her death in a
runaway. She left the Tucker ranch, at which place she and her
family had made their home for several months, about 10
o'clock, driving alone, and was found by one of H. J. Toomey's
men shortly before 12 o'clock in an insensible condition with
her foot locked in the front wheel while the horse was quietly
grazing. When first seen by the man, the horse was moving
slowly and then stopped. The reins had been tied to the
dashboard of the buggy, and the position of her body between
the wheels would indicate that she was either getting in or out
of the buggy when the animal started. The
unfortunate woman was taken back to the Tucker ranch and her
son Harry came to Wisdom for Dr Towers, who did not get there
until after her death which occured about 4 o'clock in the
afternoon. The doctor said she probably died of concussion of
the brain. The remains were taken to Butte for
burial."

When her parents died, she went to Guernsey, Channel Islands,
with her brother Robert and his wife Susan (Slade) Dyke

A garbled account from the Butte Miner, Sunday,
10 Aug 1902 'Mrs John York, a sister in law to Mrs George
York, the latter residing at 45 West Boardman street, in this
city, was thrown from a buggy in which she was riding near her
home at Divide a few days ago, and from her from her injuries
which she then received she died yesterday morning. The horse,
which was considered a safe animal, took fright while Mrs. York
was driving it. and in shying threw her from the buggy. Mrs
York was formerly a resident of Butte and her body was
yesterday brought to Butte for burial. Interment will take
place this afternoon at Mount Moriah cemetery.'
from the Obituary Column 'Mrs Elizabeth York, age 56, died last
Friday near Divide. Richards Funeral Parlor till Tuesday.
Removed to residence of Mrs George York, 45 W. Boardman where
funeral was held.'

With ten children still at home ranging in ages from Will at 21
downward to baby Bessie at two, Elizabeth homesteaded at
Fishtrap within two months of John's death. The Big Hole Valley
is a 7,500-foot high prairie crenelated on all sides by high,
white mountains.

From The Anaconda Standard, August 10, 1902 under
the headline DRAGGED TO HER DEATH:
Mrs. Elizabeth York, of one of the best known
families ill the Big Hole country, met with a violent death
about 11 o~clock Friday morning at the Chalk bluffs on the Big
Hole River. With her left foot caught in the wheel of the buggy
she was dragged to her death by a spirited horse. Her dead
body was discovered about an hour later by Fred Porter, a
neighbor. He drove four miles with the body to the York ~ch
near Bowen and notified a son, Harry York, of what had taken
place. Harry York drove 12 miles to the Belin ranch, where his
brother, William York was at work. The latter sent word to
Undertaker Richards in Butte. The body was brought to Butte
last night and Coroner Johnson notified. He made an
investigation with the result that he decided an inquest was
unnecessary. The funeral will probably take place on Tuesday.
The arrangements are not yet complete.Mrs. York
was 56 years of age and the widow of John York who died in the
Coeur d'Alenes about eight years ago. She was born on the
Island of Jersey, in the English Channel, and was married
there. With her husband she came to the United States 33 years
ago and in I ~S9 came to Montana. John York was a stock and hay
rancher and made his home in the Big Hole country, where his
thrift made him wealthy. After his death the widow and children
carried on the business and acquired other ranches. Mrs. York
leaves six sons and five daughters. The sons are William,
Hary, John, Eben, Charles and George York. The daughters are
Alice, Cora and Bessie York, Mrs. J. C. Golightly of Golden,
Cob. And Mrs. A. J. Porter of Newcastle, Cob. The last two
named are expected to arrive in Butte on Tuesday morning to
attend the funeral.Mrs. York left her ranch near
Bowen about 10 o'clock Friday morning to drive to the Belin
ranch, which had been recently leased by herself and sons.
She was taking provisions and clean linen to the sons on the Belin ranch.
About four miles from her ranch Mrs. York had reason to leave
her buggy, presumably to tighten a part of the harness. It is
supposed that as she was climbing back into the buggy, the
spirited horse started suddenly causing her foot to slip from
the front axle into the wheel. As the foot caught Mrs. York
fell backward between the front and rear right wheels. The
horse continued and the woman was dragged by the foot, her head
bumping violently on the ground until the horse tired and
stopped. The position of the body when found would indicate
that life was extinct when the horse stopped.Fred
Porter conducts a ranch near that of the Yorks. He started out
about 11 o'clock to visit a neighboring ranch, and came upon
the lifeless body of Mrs. York about noon. The foot of the
woman was still caught in the wheel. The foot and limb were
torn, but no bones were broken. The head of the woman was a
mass of cuts and bruises. The forehead was scraped and bruised
but there were no marks on the face. Porter drove the body to
the York ranch where Harry York was at work. He then notified
his brothers and sisters at the Belin ranch. All were
heartbroken by the news."

With ten children still at home ranging in ages from Will at 21
downward to baby Bessie at two, Elizabeth homesteaded at
Fishtrap within two months of John's death. The Big Hole Valley
is a 7,500-foot high prairie crenelated on all sides by high,

Never Married

This bio paragraph comes from the book Beaverhead History[:ITAL]. The bio was written by Jennie Else: "Charley York, was born in Golden, Colo., in 1879 and moved to the Wisdom area at the age of 12. He operated a ranch in the Wisdom area until about 1958 when ill health forced him to be confined to a hospital. He never married, but lived alone on his ranch with his many pet cats in a big house that was for many years a great landmark along the Big Hole river. Charley played the violin and never missed the schoolhouse dance where he would play until the wee hours of the morning. One of his favorite tunes, and his best, the old, ever popular "Red Wing".Charley had a brother, George, and two sisters, Bessie Maybee and Mrs. Claude Schroeder. He passed away in 1959 and was missed by all who knew him while he lived in his big house by the side of the road. He is buried in the Sunset Memorial Gardens on the Butte-Anaconda highway." 701

General Notes for Child George Harry York

In 1910 George and Anne got homestead rights on the upper York
ranch in the Fishtrap area ten miles east of Wisdom. George,
Anne, and Little George traveled five days in a wagon to move
out to the upper York ranch.
In the 1920s George and Ann moved back to Butte, selling the
upper York ranch on York Creek to his brother Charles. George,
after going back to the mines in Butte, got into the meat
butchering business. The family moved to Anaconda in 1928 and
started up a meat butcher shop at the family resident at Ash
St.
About 1931 or 1932 George and Ann went back to ranching and
leased a ranch from the Haggen Livestock Ranches, under
contract to produce hay to feed the sheep herds the company
ranches when the sheep were brought in during the winter
months.
George returned to the Ash Street house in Anaconda, and went
to work as a deputy sheriff for the Anaconda Police force.
About 1947 George and Ann moved to the Dempsey area in the
Deer Lodge, Valley and started up another meat market., Grandpa
George did the cutting and the selling and my father Ray bought
the cattle from the ranchers and the slaughtered them.
Grandpa always chewed a cigar. never smoked it just chewed it
and told me as a child that he farmed with dinosaurs. I never
believed him, but one time there was a dinosaur found in a
gravel pit standing up, and the archeologists were digging it
out piece by piece wrapping the bones in foil and putting them
in a refrigerated truck, the dinosaur is supposed to be
reassembled in a museum in Minneapolis, Minn. anyhow that was
the end to Grandpa George's dinosaur tails,
Grandpa always had a problem with breathing and had several
atomizers he used now and then. He ended up in the hospital, in
Anaconda, where they pronounced him with Asthma, they sent him
to the tuberculosis hospital for further lung tests. He died
there. in1952
Grandpa was a tall man, about 6' 1", with dark hair which
turned grey, he was very quiet, soft spoken and was always
there for me even though he teased me unmercifully.
He was 67 the last time he rode one of our horses in an 4th of
July Parade with Dad and I. This was a memorable parade as I
had borrowed my great-grandmother Elizabeth's side saddle from
Uncle Charlie and rode side saddle in that parade. A year later
Grandpa George was gone 751

Mr Ebenezer Hunter, late foreman at the Mt. Jessup Colliery, in
Winton, in an effort to warn others of danger, from a rapidly
descending trip of cars, down one of the slopes, occasioned by
the breaking of the wire rope, was himself struck by them and
instantly killed, on Thursday, May 7.
Mr Hunter was born in Stevenson, Scotland, in 1850. While yet a
young boy, his father became blind and he being the eldest son,
much of the burden of bread winning devolved upon him. He
obtained a place to work in a foundry in) Glasgow, where he
wrought by day. Having a great desire for an education he
attended night school and made so good an improvement of his
opportunity that he became well versed in all the ordinary
branches of study, and besides acquired some knowledge of the
Latin and Greek languages.
In 1871; he came to America and located at Wanamie. Working in
the mines in Wanamie he married Miss Mary York. He taught a
private school there for some time. In 1876 he made a trip
around the world. This journey occupied three years and seven
months. Soon after his return he became foreman at the Jessup
Coal Company s mines at Winton, which position he held till his
death.
Mr Hunter was highly esteemed by his employers and neighbors.
He was an active member of the M. E. Church. During his
residence in Winton he organized a Sunday School and became its
superintendent. He also conducted preaching services in the
evening. His funeral services were conducted in the M. & Church
in Wanamie. They were attendee by large delegations of
Oddfellows, Masons, and members of the Knights of Pythias.
