General Notes for Child Thomas Howard C. McElhannon

>Name note: Ancestry File, LDS, Todd Douglas, 7 Apr 1989

Per Dennis McElhannon: Thomas moved his family to Jefferson, Texas, about 1871, two daughters born there. Sometime after 1874, the family moved to Forman area, Little River Co, AR. Thomas Howard was Church of Christ Minister.

Marriage info: History of Terrell Co, GA, p. 107; Nov 30 1865 - Thos H.C. McElhannon to Sarah J. Davis - Thos L. Hoyl, M.G.

The 1900 census says that Sarah had eight children, and a confusing notation that 6 or 5 of them were living. This list of children is compiled from the 1880 census and Gravelly and Marvin Cemetery Records. Several may be duplicates and others just plain wrong.

This family is based on several pieces of evidence. John Vantyne/Vantine was listed in NYC directories from 1822 -1838 as a carpenter or builder. After 1840, Elizabeth, widow of John, was listed there. In the NYC death records, several entries appeared to involve this family. The main problem was the death of another John in 1843 with no way to tell which was which.

In Scott's abstract of Coroners' Reports: New York City, 1823-1842, was this entry: Vantyne, John - suicide by laudanum, b. New Jersey, age 42, a house carpenter. H.... Vantyne [sic] is his wife and Adeline Vantyne, age 9 yrs., is his daughter. (30 Sept. 1840) The only Adeline Vantyne who could fit this discription was living with Elizabeth Vantine in 1850 in Ward 14. Other children in the family were John Jr., Maria, and Edwin. Caroline and Elizabeth were in NYC death records, but they could be attached to the wrong parents. The connection to Abram and Sophia in New Jersey is based on the age given at his death of 42. Their son John was the only match in that time period.

Coroner's Office Verdict, Suicide by Laudanum

September 30--Sale of Poison to Children--
The Coroner was called to No. 40 Delancy street, to hold an inquest on the body of John Vantine, aged 44, a native of New Jersey, and a house carpenter by trade. It appeared that the deceased had a wife and family, and occasionally got very drunk, at which times he was a perfect madman. Having been out frolicking for some days, he got into one of his mad fits, and sent his eldest child, aged 9 years, to fetch a gill of laudanum. The child went to a shop kept by an unlicensed apothecary, at the corner of Eldridge and Delancy streets, and the man let her have two ounces, which she took to her infatuated (that's what it says--cy) parent, which he swallowed in the presence of his wife and family, telling them what he had done. The wife immediately ran and got medical aid, but so potent was the dose that he had taken, that all the efforts to remove it were ineffectual. he died in a few hours. Verdict, suicide by laudanum.
